Jimi Hendrix (with Band of Gypsys) - Who Knows (1970).
Date: January 28, 1970.
Venue: Madison Square Garden, New York, USA.
Jimi Hendrix - guitar
Billy Cox - bass
Buddy Miles - drums
James Marshall "Jimi" Hendrix (born Johnny Allen Hendrix; November 27, 1942 - September 18, 1970) was an American rock guitarist, singer, and songwriter. Although his mainstream career spanned only four years, he is widely regarded as one of the most influential electric guitarists in the history of popular music, and one of the most celebrated musicians of the 20th century. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame describes him as "arguably the greatest instrumentalist in the history of rock music".
Born in Seattle, Washington, Hendrix began playing guitar at the age of 15. In 1961, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and trained as a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division; he was granted an honorable discharge the following year. Soon afterward, he moved to Clarksville, Tennessee, and began playing gigs on the Chitlin' Circuit, earning a place in the Isley Brothers' backing band and later with Little Richard, with whom he continued to work through mid-1965. He then played with Curtis Knight and the Squires before moving to England in late 1966 after being discovered by Linda Keith, who in turn interested bassist Chas Chandler of the Animals in becoming his first manager. Within months, Hendrix had earned three UK top ten hits with the Jimi Hendrix Experience: "Hey Joe", "Purple Haze", and "The Wind Cries Mary". He achieved fame in the U.S. after his performance at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, and in 1968 his third and final studio album, Electric Ladyland, reached number one in the U.S.; it was Hendrix's most commercially successful release and his first and only number one album. The world's highest-paid performer, he headlined the Woodstock Festival in 1969 and the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970 before his accidental death from barbiturate-related asphyxia on September 18, 1970, at the age of 27.
Hendrix was inspired musically by American rock and roll and electric blues. He favored overdriven amplifiers with high volume and gain, and was instrumental in utilizing the previously undesirable sounds caused by guitar amplifier feedback. He helped to popularize the use of a wah-wah pedal in mainstream rock, and was the first artist to use stereophonic phasing effects in music recordings. Holly George-Warren of Rolling Stone commented: "Hendrix pioneered the use of the instrument as an electronic sound source. Players before him had experimented with feedback and distortion, but Hendrix turned those effects and others into a controlled, fluid vocabulary every bit as personal as the blues with which he began."
Hendrix was the recipient of several music awards during his lifetime and posthumously. In 1967, readers of Melody Maker voted him the Pop Musician of the Year, and in 1968, Rolling Stone declared him the Performer of the Year. Disc and Music Echo honored him with the World Top Musician of 1969 and in 1970, Guitar Player named him the Rock Guitarist of the Year. The Jimi Hendrix Experience was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992 and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005. Rolling Stone ranked the band's three studio albums, Are You Experienced, Axis: Bold as Love, and Electric Ladyland, among the 100 greatest albums of all time, and they ranked Hendrix as the greatest guitarist and the sixth greatest artist of all time.

Who can imagine an old Jimi Hendrix? He would now be almost 80. Beautifully frozen in time with improvisations bordering on jazz, his direction in 1970. He was so modest that had we told him of his influence, he would have shyly smiled. RIP Great One.

Its funny that you have such admiration for Jimi yet your thumbnail is a picture of Little Richard! Jimi once played guitar in Little Richie Pennimans backing group and Richard fired Jimi... apparently Jimi wore a shirt with ruffles and Lil Rich fired him saying "I'm the only one that wears frilly shirts in MY band!!" So yeah, needless to say, Jimi did NOT like Little Richard Penniman.

What is so cool about this recording at Fillmore East is that Billy Cox had been with Jimi since their army days. They were army buddies who shared an interest in Rock and roll, R&B and Soul. And they both went on to play the bustling Nashville scene and later the "Chitlin' Curcuit. And in the process doing an apprenticeship with notable greats such as King Curtis, Sam Cooke and Little Richard and others. Cox notes that Jimi liked to travel while he liked to stay in Nashville where he had a steady gig. Cox reports that Jimi then went to New York where he joined the Isley Brothers and then was taken to England by the Animals "Chas" Chandler credited with "discovering" Jimi. According to Cox, upon Jimi's departure to England, Jimi said, "I'll call you over (to England) once I get settled." As Billy Cox was Jimi's favorite bass player and you can really hear how in sinc they are on this brilliant track. The intensity of "Band of Gypsies" is without equal in my opinion. Band of Brothers.
@psykomystro
@psykomystro 3 года назад
Oh so true... Word has it that (from one of his biographies I read and a documentary video I watched) Mike Jeffrey had some issues with "The Band of Brothers" (how often referred to them as well) and wanted the Experience back together... Somewhere not long after this "someone" slipped Billy a "mickey" and got sick and that was the demise of The Band of Gypsys.

this guy was really an out-of-space being... I´m both happy to being able to enjoy his creations a.s.a.p, and still being able to do it. By the way... as his inspiration/talent weren´t enough, he had & therefor showed an important degree of social conscience... something not so easy to find in a guy... real genius... the main issue-the same that happens in every avant-garde artist- is the... difficult place he chose to run along... miles ahead, all alone... risking his everything nite & day...

Love this version of Who Knows.... Buddy Miles funk-metronome style steady drumming and Billy Cox's bass groove gave Jimi a solid backing to play off of. For a bootleg, the recording is pretty clear. Always loved this song -- I cut my blues teeth early on with Who Knows and Hear My Train A Comin'... Those two Hendrix tracks taught me all I really needed to know about blues guitar, really. Thanks for posting this.

The dynamics of Jimi's playing are so musical,mature...and his harmonic approach so clever and rich...he anticipated the future,opened a door everybody crossed,even Miles Davis...but he is not just a guitar prophet of the past,he remains as a standard even for today standards.In case he were still alive,a live performance of Jimi would be at the top of what can be achieved through that form of art we call music.Long live Jimi!

These guys and the Allman Bro's were the only gypsie I knew growing up early teens 1969/70. Later in life you find the good music spirit in all gypsy music THEN you realize it's in you, not to copy Jimi or Django but tap into that souful gypsy free spirit with control.

Agree 100%. I saw Jimi in 1968 and the original Allman Brothers a few times before Duane died. The spirit and originality and freedom and spontaneity all those guys played with was mind-boggling. Even if you could somehow see them again live today -- they would be light-years ahead of time again. Still thankful and still astounded !

Jimi on t'aime.

Jimi was ill at this show, the show must go on... Sad. it's groovy, but for the wrong reason. It's just as wrong to drug someone today as it was back in 1970. I'm glad I wasn't there.

@@mjimih you are right about drugs. It´s sad to think that today musicians wanna be stars and get drugged before they master their instruments and compositions. I learnt that lesson when a drummer from a Buenos Aires know band told me so. I was taking lessons and producing my second album. I´m glad we share our feelings and thoughts about it

The song was originally released on Hendrix; Band of Gypsy's. This version was released in the late 90's as Jimi Hendrix and Band of Gypsy's Live at the Fillmore East. Everything released on the double CD set was what didn't make the cut for the original Band of Gypsys album in 1970

@@michellebutler3467 That's bc Jimi decompensated at this MSG show. He holds it together for Who Knows but unravels during Earth Blues and the show us aborted, along w the BOG unit. Buddy Miles reported that Michael Jeffries gave Jimi bad acid surrupticiously, and combined with pressure from management to end BOG, Jimi broke down. That said, he took the BOG influence with him the rest of his career and took things to an even higher level w his Cry of Love band. Despite his mental state, this rendition of Who Knows is very interesting and reflects the hard funk genre that Jimi was literally inventing in 1969-70.
