Jimmy Buffett-A Pirate Looks At Forty

Mother, mother ocean, I have heard you call
Wanted to sail upon your waters since I was three feet tall
You've seen it all, you've seen it all
Watched the men who rode you switch from sails to steam
And in your belly you hold the treasures few have ever seen
Most of 'em dream, most of 'em dream
Yes I am a pirate, two hundred years too late
The cannons don't thunder, there's nothin' to plunder
I'm an over-forty victim of fate
Arriving too late, arriving too late
I've done a bit of smugglin', I've run my share of grass
I made enough money to buy Miami, but I pissed it away so fast
Never meant to last, never meant to last
And I have been drunk now for over two weeks
I passed out and I rallied and I sprung a few leaks
But I got stop wishin', got to go fishin'
Down to rock bottom again
Just a few friends, just a few friends
(instrumental)
I go for younger women, lived with several awhile
Though I ran 'em away, they'd come back one day
Still could manage to smile
Just takes a while, just takes a while
Mother, mother ocean, after all the years I've found
My occupational hazard being my occupation's just not around
I feel like I've drowned, gonna head uptown

Three Oceans, four major seas, countless minor one, over 100,000 nautical miles on 7 different US aircraft carriers. Long now retired. Sure do miss it. Jimmy's songs brings me back to that time in my life that I truly loved and sadly I'll will never see again. My dream in the days remaining is to go back to Key West and live there. God I miss the ocean. I'm over 50 victim of fate. Thanks Jimmy for the memories.

Two things about this song. 1) When I used to work in a bar/restaurant here in town back in the 1980's, we, (the staff) would sing this song all of the time. At one point all bartenders, waitstaff and kitchen were singing this in perfect harmony. The customer's loved it! 2) Jimmy Buffett was one of my Dad's favorite entertainers and this was one of his favorite songs. My Dad passed away in 2009 and I feel sadden each time I hear this song, yet I still love to listen to it. Lastly, I was lucky enough to actually meet Jimmy Buffett, (and his parents) many years ago. I can't speak for now but back then he was a very down-to-Earth friendly sort of guy, (his parents were equally as friendly.) I am hoped he and they still are.

Mr Buffet, I’m a country boy from Virginia & you influenced my life so much in 1985- to this day. I had an injury in college that caused me to stop playing football & I had life changing choices to make. I chased a dream & it came true. I’ve traveled the world, watched sunsets & sun rises over all the oceans. I became a fisherman & lived a life that millionaires work their entire lives to see once in a while & I got paid to do it everyday. Now I’m entering the twilight of my career & I’ll be writing books about what I’ve seen & experienced & you were there the whole time. Thank you for my fairytale life that many dream of, but few take the jump to achieve it. Capt Rich

Another pirate named Edward Teach, a.k.a. Blackbeard infamously haunted The Graveyard of the Atlantic off the coast of the Outer Banks. Thank God we (artist and audience) have been granted the opportunity to grow old(er) and hear this music for many years. Long live the music of our era, the world is still in love with it. 59 yrs old and still listening to music from those magic years. Would love to see this kind of music being created again before I die. It never, EVER, gets old, and it’s not going to die anytime soon. You can still hear it....EVERYWHERE! In commercials, movies, shows, etc. It’s still very much alive. I hope I fade before it does. Been loving it since around 1968. Nostalgia is bittersweet.

A1A is without doubt Jimmy's most melodic album. Many people rate this song as his best ever, even better than "He went to Paris" and "Death of an unpopular poet". Either way I've lived for for years with Jimmy's music and brought up my two kids to the sounds of the first seven albums, either at home or in the back seat of various cars as we traveled round Australia....

My dad died 5 years ago of a brain tumor, and this song was one of the ones picked out to be played at the funeral. Even now listening to it 5 years later, I'm bawling with grief from what happened. I know how you feel and I just want to say this: please dont try to stay strong for anyone. You do what you need to do in order to get by, but dont try to forget. It's going to hurt for a long time, but please don't forget. It does get easier with time. My heart goes out to you and your family,

I'm 60 now. I looked far and away. I started at the place I am now. I guess I seen a few things here and there. Guess I lost a few years staying drunk and chasing whores. It ain't that damn romantic. Find something you love and stick with it. I sit on the porch, drink coffee in the morning, drink a little booze at night. The sun sets the same all over the world. It don't matter wher you been or what you done. It's where you are.

Idk if this was my dads absolute favorite, but I really like it and he and I used to listen to a lot of jimmy buffet together. I’m sitting in his boat right now, not on the water yet unfortunately. But we will get back out there soon. I love seeing all of us that have this in common in this comment. It’s really moving

I used to haul horses all over the US. Started every trip with this song. A petite red head battling the endless road, 40' trailer and 6 restless horses. Good times. Always a laugh when the big rig drivers asked "Little lady, are you driving that rig?" Yes sir! The restless spirit of all gypsies... Mother, Mother ocean...

my husband was the same age as Jimmy. He had the mustache & everywhere we went people would do a double take.Blonde & tan, same smile. Joe left for his permanent ocean voyage and I can finally listen to Buffett's music without crying as much. I'd give my pirates treasure to walk with Joe Ruotsi down the Sandy beach with the sun and wind at our backs ! Hug your pirate every day because you never know when he'll be called out to sea to ride the waves for good... I LOVE YOU JOE RUOTSI. !! And THANKYOU Jimmy for sharing years of your Nautical Happiness and memories!!

This song evokes so many feelings and memories. In late summer of 1989, my father, 75, and I scraped together enough money to buy an old steel hulled ketch docked in Key Largo. Neither one of us knew how to sail but we knew we could learn. Found a captain to sail us back to Miami. The boat began taking on water and we had to hurry into dry dock. Shortly after getting the boat home, my father, not feeling well, went to his doctor. You all know where this is going. He was told he had three months to live. Crying as I write this. The boat was sold before he died and I left Miami in 1990, at age 39, after living there for 23 years. Settled in Baltimore, my depression became bipolar illness and I went in-patient in 1991 for seven months. Met a woman, lived with her, got married, found a job I liked, then had a relapse in 2004 and its been downhill since then. I just knew I wanted to go back to Florida but I couldn't hold any job. Too sick. But in 2011, she bought a condo on the Space Coast, we did the 'snow bird' thing, then moved there in 2016. Not really doing better, but its the place I prefer to be. Now we're back to back and forthing and once again I just want to be in Florida, forever. I don't care if the summer is roasting and hurricanes are a risk. It's my real home as well as my spiritual home. It seems that the lives of my grandfather, my father and me are cursed. Lives of melancholy and shattered dreams.
