He's not an anti-Semite. He negotiated the peace settlement between Egypt and Israel, one of the most significant (and lasting) peace agreements in the Middle East. He just doesn't believe in blindly supporting Israel.
What a dreadful speech. Like nails on a blackboard. And Carter was a terrible President. And also the hilarious blooper Hubert Horatio Hornblower . What a terrible speech.
James Kennedy A substantial portion of them were Ted Kennedy supporters who had little if any enthusiasm for Carter. Nor did Jerry Brown's supporters. The far left wing of the Democratic Party presented a big problem for Carter in the general election. Many stayed home on election day. Some voted for third party candidate John Anderson and a full thirty percent of self-proclaimed liberals actually voted for Reagan. Carter took the majority of liberals who bothered to vote, but in the end their lack of enthusiasm made them an impotent force for Jimmy Carter.
I love President Carter, but this was really a dreadful speech, Humphrey gaffe and all. For one thing, focus on positive things and ignore the primaries. Don't try to cozy up to your primary opponents like this. No one is buying that and it makes you look weak.
If you’ve seen the full version of the speech, you’ll notice that the audience looks tired, uninspired, and doesn’t really seem to get excited very much at any of his big applause lines. Once in a while they got whipped up for but for the most part it was a pretty bored crowd, at least by outward appearances.
carter didn't make a major mistake in regard to iran nor in regard to latin america or else, on the contrary. those who mad mistakes were the eisenhowers (mosaddeg 53..), kennedys (iraq 63..), johnsons (brazil 69..), nixons (chile 73..), reagans (nicaragua 81 ff..), bushs
The Carter White House staff frequently referred to Hubert Humphrey as "Hornblower"--and it slipped out on Little Jemmy at a terribly inopportune moment.
My favorite president. This peanut farmer didn't lead us into another war that we could not afford to pay for, he made peace with Israel which seemed impossible, created over 10 million new jobs in 4 years, created the green energy project which was way ahead of its time, cut the deficit in half and created a strong union workforce. Carter was a great, underrated president.
The Carter White House referred to him as Hornblower as a joke, referring to his middle name. Unfortunately, it became public here. I think Hubert Humphrey would have laughed at this.
Hubert Horatio Hornblower! ...Humphrey! ... I was only 11 years old at the time and politics didn't mean anything to me but I remember my dad laughed so hard at that gaff that he almost fell out of his chair.
I used to agree with you. But lately Jimmy Carter has sounded far too anti-Semitic for my tastes. Maybe he has "Alzheimers'" (he's older than my Dad and Dad died of Alzheimer's 3 years ago) and is just saying senile things or his disdain for Israel is where his heart truly is.
Carter said his team is going to beat the Republicans. Thank God that did not turn out to be true. Reagan won in 1980 and again hands down in 1984 and as a result we have had one of the best 8 year presidencies in American history.
Carter had a 34% approval rating at this time in 1980. No news outlet, even tabloid ones, would have said Carter would win. As of today, Obama stands at 48%. Let's not get carried away.
Allowing taxpayers to keep more of what they earn and invest it in the economy results in a "phoney boom"? If that is the case, is our 1-2% economic growth, 8%-PLUS unemployment for the last 4 years, a shrinking job market, and a $16 trillion dollar deficit ($5 trillion of which was incurred by Pres. Obama in only 3.5 years), what you would consider a "real" recovery? Just how bass-ackwards are your thinking and priorities anyway?
I'm wondering what polls you're seeing that tell you that a "small majority" want Obamacare kept as law. However, unless Romney can win at least three of the swing states, your prediction about Obama being re-elected, sadly, will likely come true. I have very little faith in about 50% of my fellow Americans. My question is: if he's re-elected and things are worse than they are now at the end of his 2nd term, will he still be blaming Bush? (I know the answer to that question.)
Interesting parallel between this speech and Obama's in that they both mention FDR. I guess when you can't run on your own record, you talk about what other guys did.
Well, I guess I've heard it for myself. My dad used to joke about it talk about it. But at the time I was just going into the sixth grade and I didn't pay attention to politics. That's what you call a big time Freudian slip!
This will be a good speech to parallel to Obama's upcoming speech this week. Obama is the new Jimmy Carter. Notice how he rambles about past leaders and doesn't get to the point.
Poor Jimmy. Too smart for his own good, ignorant of foreign affairs, couldn't read the American people who he wished to serve, gaff prone (Hornblower), so weak.
He was known to be a real screamer in the White House and carried empty luggage up a the stairs to his plane. It was a lot like Clinton with his giant Bible for photo ops.
Doing work for the poor and building houses in his 90s and teaching Sunday School every week even after every surgery...the man has never been disgraced in his life. You want disgrace, look at the orange lump in the White House now. But look fast.
