There have been reggae greats, Marley, Toots, Desmond to name some of the more prominent ones. But if there was ever a Godfather of Reggae it must be Jimmy Cliff. An absolute legend and still a superb performer. He has grown old gracefully and still delivers for me. Respect.
May God bless you Jimmy. I remember your open air concert 1981 at the reunification stadium in Douala Cameroon. Marvellous.

This is a cover version of Bob Marley's song. It was written by Bob Marley. Other sources credit the songwriting to Vincent "Tata" Ford. Here is an interesting take on the origins of the song from the Jamaican Gleaner jamaica-gleaner.com/article/entertainment/20190512/story-song-no-woman-no-cry-ode-women-everywhere
With this great recording of this Marley 's hit he might as well had conceded defeat to Jimmy Cliff. The man a wonder of it like it was his. It's remarkable.
I remember those days when Jupple Phillip George of Sierra Leone (SLBS) and Wilmot Stubblefield of Liberia (ELBC) entertained us when we did our laundry on Saturdays. It was 1976. It is long gone. My community--- Spot Bar, Lynn's Motel and the Administration building were the places to go. Those days will never come back... BYE!!!!!!
That sounds amazing! It is fantastic having so much available on the internet, but there was something quite personal about the radio back in the day. What were the popular local or regional musicians at that time? I am guessing the radio shows you listened to mixed it up with local stuff.
My day started with the thought, 'I am born to win' and from then on played a complete album of this Reggae legend, Jimmy Cliff. My dad, now late, introduced and played Cliff's all through my earliest days. God bless you Jimmy!
Sounds exotic … like crossroads of the world …. Refugees Pilgrims and travelers sharing their stories feeling the songs and toasting …. Pricelsss memories
Someone please correct me, but I think this Jimmy Cliff’s rendition of ‘No Woman No Cry’ hit the charts and made its mark globally in the mid 1970’s before Bob Marley reclaimed his work, being the original writer of the song, and made an even bigger hit with it in mid 1970’s. Fact is Jimmy Cliff was a legend way before Bob Marley made his mark. Bob later stole the limelight from Jimmy Cliff though it can be argued either way who is the greater.
