Always liked Jimmy Edwards. Underrated maybe, and largely forgotten now, as are all the stalwarts of funny comedy from his era. Now we only have woke comedians!

Sadly the 3 Air Despatchers died in the crash landing of the Dakota. Buried at Overloon Cemetery, The Netherlands.

What i didn't like about J edwards was his like of blood sports

Jimmy lived with his gayness always a stress. I believe he told his wife who just got on with life. He was cruelly exposed by Australian papers, when he came out to Oz. He feared he would lose the respect and friends he had, in High Tory and Hunting circles - and with some of the RAF chaps, but most just acted as though.they had heard nothing. I don't tell this now for titillation, but because I fairly regularly come across men bewailing the WW2 days, when men were men... So many gays in the front line, whilst many straight men attempted to escape war by pretending to be gay... Another surgeon who worked on plastic surgery was Harold Gillies. He had worked on plastic surgery back in WW1, experimenting and developing best results. Post WW2, he did MOST of the first male to female sex change, in the UK, turning car racing driver and spitfire pilot, Robert Cowell into Roberta - who continued racing cars... A touch of alternative history in memory of all the boys who flew and died, hiding who they were... Of course, some were pretty relaxed about it. Ian Gleed DFC was very popular, very respected, known for training newbies in defensive flying, tricks he picked up in the Battle of France and Battle of Britain. Before his death in action, he wrote his memoir, and his publisher said, "Ian... It's a bit obvious you aren't into girls..." So they invented a fiancee, called Pamela, I think it was... When he died, the publisher got piles of letters, asking to be sent on to broken hearted Pamela. Would have given Ian a wry grin. Nice memory of Jimmy. Quite a chum of Prince Philip, on and off. On one amusing meet up, he turned to PP and said, "Stick with me, and you'll get your photo in the papers..."
