Madmen started in 2008...on AMC. The doesn't make you instantly famous. John became famous as the seasons rolled on and as he also appeared in feature films. THAT'S when he became famous-famous.

Mad Men wasn't really that huge at the start. It took a little while for it to build momentum. I think John got famous about season 2 or 3 when more people were latching on to the show. That is me just speculating though, I have no idea. But he definitely wasn't famous until at least a little after the first season.
