I think the watch symbolizes both Jimmy's & Gus's weaknesses for money & pride. Both Jimmy's act of dropping the watch & Gus's act of letting go of the watch symbolize their shared desire to escape being slaves to capitalism. Truly one of the scenes of all time.

I love that we're shown how hard Jimmy tries to go unnoticed and blend in with his environment while in the background we see the master of hiding in plain sight and he's purposefully indirectly shown to us for 2 weirdly long shots of Jimmy's face lol

Jimmy's a con man, he's focused on the one guy. As long as that guy doesn't notice he's being watched, Jimmy's meeting his goals as far as he's concerned. But to an observant third party, like the audience or Gus, it's very obvious that he's watching this one guy Ironically this makes Jimmy's quick thinking with the watch kinda backfire--if Gus knows he's acting suspicious, then he'll know that Jimmy probably didn't actually lose his watch, which means Jimmy must be clever, think quick on his feet, and is probably experienced at this kind of thing. Gus gets a full read on Jimmy, without ever having to reveal himself at all, and Jimmy's too busy trying to not blow his cover that he's not even looking for anything suspicious

This is without a doubt the best way that BCS ever brought back a character from “Breaking Bad.” If you had watched BB, it was practically obvious that Gus was the one moving around Jimmy and you were on the edge of your seat waiting for it to be made official. If you hadn’t seen BB, it was still made clear that the character was very important. Such excellent framing 💯

The framing and introduction of Gus in BCS was perfect. Gus was blurred out in the background, cleaning and bussing tables. As he got closer, his head was never in the frame. He was moving around people, invisible to everyone, including Saul. Amazing introduction to a top-tier villain.

Yes, I understand your confusion about that. A big misconception about being "lawful" in terms of this morality system is that it doesn't mean adhering to laws as written but to one's own established sense of right and wrong which Gus does as a very orderly person with a strong tendency to do what is "right" even if it's evil or illegal as hell. "Chaotic," the opposite of lawful, is not giving a shit even if one knows it's wrong which better describes the Salamancas and Saul Goodman.

Gus has a subtle way of asking something so insignificant, to get at the truth. Like When he was at the FBI, making a community service visit. He noticed a picture of Walt and Hank, together: "Is he one of your agents?" Lol

The moving, circular motion of the fans are also a definitive and deliberate creative decision to showcase the concept and nature of ''cycles'' - how most characters go through the same ''cycle'' as others - having a lucky break, experiencing success and then experiencing their own downfall from their own decision, greed and all. Evidently wrote and planned by the showrunners - I expected nothing less than seeing those fans, used both literally and symbolically!

Gus is interesting. He’s so solitary and confident. He keeps a good eye on his business by sweeping, cleaning and helping with customer service. I can’t help but wonder that since his background can’t be found prior to 1986 that he may have been on Pinochet’s elite “security” guys who disappear people and coherce agreements with the regime. So when Pinochet was ousted they gave him a new identity. Because he’s so able to rise above emotion and look simply for the yes/no answer. An answer that takes deep thinking when he has no time to think yet he stays cool and aloof. Like he’s such a finely trained special guard near the top all emotions have been wiped away. His guy feelings and intuition work exceptionally well for him.

the character of gus tells you so much about personal excellence. he never goes that extramile with an extrasmile for the customer. he goes 10 of them. thats how you leave impressions that a) make them come back for more and b) thwarts every suspicion towards you. TAKE NOTE.

such small details go a long way. Jimmy's quick reaction to throw the watch into the trash but more importantly, Gus never wanted to actually clean the watch, he wanted to see if it was broken. He already suspected something was up.

0:31 I absolutely LOVED that. Earlier while watching a previous episode I was wondering "will we meet Gus ?" and I was hoping they would shoot a scene where he is working in the background, just passing by, with his iconic yellow shirt, being so polite and upstanding. And of course we would ABSOLUTELY know who it would be at first sight. And guess what. They did it. And nailed it.

I think Gus specifically went that route in sweeping so he can tell the guy with the bag "You're being watched" in a whisper and used the noise of the dustpan to cover it. 1:08 - 1:16 He may have seen from the distance in the background of Jimmy watching the guy with the bag, walked past him sweeping to be sure, and then tip the guy off hes being watched.
