Aw what a lovely surprise to come across this video this morning. It being St Andrew's day I was on a "proud to be scottish" youtube trawl, and searched jimmy shand randomly as this was music I was brought up around as a child at my grandparents and being taken to dances like these. It was shock but absolutely amazing to see my gran and grandy dancing in this, I didnt even know it existed. My grandy died suddenly in 1996 when I was I was only 17, seeing him in being the big friendly sociable gentleman i remember him being was just magic, I've not stopped smiling all morning I'm so happy to have found this and defo need to buy the DVD as we lost my gran in 2010, these memories become even more cherished once the people we love pass on. So many familiar faces not just family on these vids, I still cant believe I am only finding them now and cant wait to browse through and watch some more 😍😍
Love Jimmy Shand - and have a lot of his records. I also have one of Will Star on Parlophone label - No: F3361 - 78 RPM - Martelette Polka & Jaqueline Waltz - if you want it - get in touch.
A ken am 5 years to late but I just saw this comment, I'm a scottish 14 year old right now and also play the box. Except I play the piano accordion instead of the button box, I was originally taught by a family friend but now get lessons online
That hall has to be a standard design… I’m saying that because in Burrawang, New South Wales, Australia, we have the exact same hall design you’d swear it was ours lol. I’m no Scot but loved Jimmy Shands music since I was a wee toddler! 😊
@@elvispresley1085 I do--but then I myself am a proud Scottish-American. By the way, your display name sounds vaguely familiar. Did you play music at some time or other?
Well I have Scottish ancestry in me and I love all that it entails, music, bagpipes and dance. Can listen and look for hours. Jimmy Shand and his music is great. Have a couple of old C.D. s of his and would never part with them.😢
All the dancers, correctly dressed here,as are the Band! Yes,Jimmy Shand Junior,...not wanting to follow the footsteps of his father. All very well, and appreciated, but he remains a SHAND!! And you can hear it. Compliments to him? Don't think so,..he would say,...sorry it was my father! Shame, but there are others, reconstructing the well documented Shand sound, and a good thing, too.(Bruce Lindsay, grown up in the Shand House, and Ian Cruickshanks)
oh well if your irish"come into the parlour" what a wonderful musical heritage well share in the isles every corner offers a rich musical tradition i work in a care home and this music really lifts the spirits of the guests
@@sheilamacisaac1482 correct. most irish music/culture was adopted from scotland and other countries in the late 1800s. the irish music/sangs we see on you tube today only started in the late 50s(i know i was around then). fiddle reel music indigenous to scotland. there are 100s of scottish fiddle reels in ireland adopted from scotland. cielidths are scottish adopted by irish nationalists in the late 1800s. jimmy shand/will starr/the wyper bros all were very influencial in the adopted irish ceili. ....niel gow,his son nathaniel/ james hill/james scot skinner were scottish fiddlers who heavily influenced "irish" music. if you research irish sangs/fiddle reels you will find they they are scottish. you can type in.......music essays| traditional irish ireland.......ten type in.....irish traditional music feature ask about ireland........then type in.......history ireland reinventing tradition the boundaries of irish dance helen brennan.......you will read where it,s all adopted . ceilidths/fiddle reel music/accordian music/stepdance and more.
@@brucecollins4729 I received this reply in email and had to come to RU-vid to find out what it was about. My response was only to point out that we Scots have a variety of dance temps from Scottish Waltz to Strathsapey, Jig, reel, Hornpipe and the various Highland tempos. The Virginia reel is to an extent based on American tunes and style but is in reel timeb(4/4). I have been involved in Scottish dance since childhood, having grown up only 4 miles from Jimmy Shand (Senior), and taught it for years and particularly in the West/Hebrides we are very aware of the links with Irish and Cape Breton music.
I'd rather hear music to welcome him to the Isle of Riker--or better still, the Isle of Alcatraz. I know the prison there is closed, but maybe they could re-open it in his "honor." 😁😆🤣
I’m Drew I absolutely ❤️ this I’m 🇬🇧 but I have 🏴 cousins they live in Peterhead in Aberdeenshire. Casey lives in Boddon now. He’s started a family and he,s doing very well. I would love to buy myself an accordion that’s similar to Jimmy Shand I ❤️ listening to Bluebell polka.@nathantaylor3937
