Jimmy Wilde, whose heart weighs about as much as him, decided to battle determined Filipino whirlwind Pancho villa amid more than two years of inactivity. Layoffs had been relatively new to Wilde who previously (previously as in before his professional fighting career) battled in boxing booths 25 times a day against men weighing as much as 170 pounds. Also, in Wilde's most recent bout he showed a tremendous heart in taking a horrible beating to one of the greatest "bantamweights" of all time, Pete Herman. Basically, Wilde was somewhat in over his head in taking the bout. The fight was to take place in The Polo Grounds in New York. This was one of the first times Wilde fought on American soil as well. When the bout started, Wilde understood the consequences of agressively approaching the younger, quicker, and stronger Villa and "The Mighty Atom" dominated on long range. Wilde continued in the second until a vicious right hand after the bell (according to most sources who observed the bout) flattened him. The not-so-mighty "Atom" was badly dazed and fought purely on courage. The pounding continued until an exhausted and battered Wilde fell flat on his face in the seventh round off of a serious of punches. Wilde was counted out and had to be carried back to his corner for the last time in his legendary career.

Pancho Villa was not only 1st Filipino who made it to international championship. But also 1st Asian. Despite of racism on his era he still became famous & beat the odds. Sad he died young. As at the time dentistry was still in its infancy. One time he went to US to one of his fights. He had his swollen tooth extracted. Which because of less hygine got infected.(thought not yet discovered at the time.) Against physician wishes instead of resting he fought in what would have been his last boxing match & lost. He had few remaining swollen tooth extracted 2 days after last fight. There is was discovered his throat got infected due to last extraction. Since antibiotics were not yet discovered back then. He was precribe to rest to let his immune system fight infection. He did not listen since he is a tourist & will be back in PH in few days. He decided & went on a drinking party spree with his friends. Until he complained his throat was full of pain. Was rushed to hospital & was seen tht infection got worse. Doctors decided to operate him. He sadly slip into a coma in operating table died the next day 17 days before what would have been his 24th birthday.

@@vincentforonda7381 had tht same conclusion too before. But then I realized medicine was in it's infancy back then. He would still have high chance of dying if he followed doctors instruction & only rested. As there was no anti biotics back then. At least he enjoyed & party before dying.

@@vincentforonda7381 Plus people didn't understand medicine like they do now. Your thinking, well it's his fault based on your modern understanding, and you knowing what happened. He wouldn't have even considered the possibility that he might die.

Jimmy Wilde. One of the greatest flyweight old-timers. Although he lost this fight as well as it being his very last battle, you have to admit that he would've beaten Pancho if they fought earlier. He had a ton of strength and durability for a flyweight.

@@LegendsofBoxinginColor I respect you for managing to collect all of these tapes for us boxing historians to watch and enjoy; gave it a watch and I agree that he is at least top 3 flyweights of all time. He was way too developed for such an early era.

My ancestors said Pancho Villa was a patriot, he challenged the U.S. to let U.S. colonialism pass through boxing. But if Pancho Villa is defeated, it is said that America's colonialism will continue in the Philippines, but if he defeats the american boxer the philippines will be free. That's why villa died after being poisoned by the U.S. triad. Because of his patriotism. 🇵🇭🥊🇺🇸

Imo Wilde is the hardest p4p puncher ever. Had 98 KO's in a 131 wins with only 3 losses and a draw as a flyweight and a small flyweight at that. He fought a lot of his career weighing between 95 and 105 pounds (Keep in mind the flyweight limit is 112lbs) and was still able to produce that many KO's. Simply crazy
@LegendsofBoxinginColor

he must be one of the hardest hitters. its so hard to produce that type of knockouts at flyweight

I don’t blame you but they’re not just getting hit. The footage isn’t great but if you slow it down you can see just how many punches were missing or being parried/knocked off course.

GREAT Jimmy Wilde probably my favourite fighter ever, I got a framed autograph of him and one of Dempsey in my living room. So strange that they have 2 of his 3 loses on film and only one of him in his prime. He was booked to fight Franky Genaro a light puncher but that changed close to the fight and he fought big hitting Villa. His other two loses were one when he had the flu but still fought and against the much heavier Pete Hermon who came in so much overweight it took the Prince of Wales to Cox Wilde to fight. Doctors use to examine him to see how he hit so hard and was ranked 3rd hardest hitter of all time. Thanks for uploading another
