Jinotega Nicaragua 2023 🇳🇮 First Look at a Magical Highland City in the Mountains

Camille and I take a road trip from Leon to Telica through Malpaisillo through Sebaco and up the mountains to #Jinotega where we walk the streets, visit the parks, get some coffee and pastries, and just generally explore this amazing mountain city in the highlands. Parque Central, the Cathedral, and real authentic street music are highlights along with just walking around town to show you what it looks like. #nicaragua #travel

Just an FYI - the crossroads city is Sébaco, with the accent on the "e". It's a rice growing area with a moderately interesting archeology museum at its northern edge (heading towards Matagalpa) in Chaguitillo. Because of its flat topography, It's also one of the few cities in Nicaragua where cycling is a primary mode of transportation, in spite of the heat (it's a lowland area, so it's hot).

Are all the security bars and barbed wire really necessary? It looks nice and safe while you're walking around, bit then i see all the security measures.
@ScottAlanMillerVlog
@ScottAlanMillerVlog Год назад
Yes, because we live outside, not inside. So without those you'd be completely wide open. Anyone could just walk right into your house. Remember EVERYTHING is open here. We don't have locked doors most of the time, we don't even have closed doors most of the time. And it isn't just doors, the middle of many houses are WIDE open. It's so easy, without the additional security, for any random kid to just hop a wall, grab your laptop, and scamper off. Living so completely exposed, unlike being locked up in sealed houses, leaves "owning things" a bit of a problem as it is to easy to just grab it and run. Remember, these are here BECAUSE it is so safe. We don't need to have locked up and sealed houses like the US or Canada. But because we are so wide open, we have to accommodate with something. Once you understand the context that we live fully outdoors all the time, you start to see the barbed wire and such as signs of how safe the country is, rather than how dangerous it is. In the US you are trying to prevent armed, violent forced entry. In Nicaragua you are trying to stop having loose items casually grabbed.

When my brother in law showed me his house, he was really proud of his 10-foot walls. You will also notice the zero-lot-line construction. My MILs house used to have a side-yard and front-yard, but those were walled off or converted into house rooms to increase security.

What do I need to do to get a permit to fly my drone in Nica, Scott?
@ScottAlanMillerVlog
@ScottAlanMillerVlog Год назад
Assume you can't. No one can. You need a lawyer, a few years in the country, and a really strong proof that you have some overwhelming reason to justify being one of a handful of companies in the country to be granted a license. I know that LG (the giant Korean manufacturer) qualified, but it took a lot of work. There is no permit for normal people. It is essentially impossible to get a license. It's not a "get a permit" process. It's a "get a waiver that the law doesn't apply to you" process.
@ScottAlanMillerVlog
@ScottAlanMillerVlog Год назад
I have never once heard even a rumor of any private person getting the permit. No personal projects will qualify. And if you are American, it'll make it SO much harder. And if you have ties to the US government or anything like that, harder again. It's so ridiculously hard to get. That's why we don't talk about it like a process, it's talked about as forbidden.
@ScottAlanMillerVlog
@ScottAlanMillerVlog Год назад
I did hear the story (first hand from both sides) of a cop that told someone that they'd look the other way and let them have a drone. And the federal authorities came and arrested that cop and he went off to jail. So I'd not recommend trying to make friends and get favors as some people do, you take big risks not just with your drone, but the lives of the people who might be unaware of how much risk they take to do you a favor.

Not true that there no expats, just not many. Internacional tourism was more of a thing earlier, but short term missionaries were the bulk of foreign travelers until Jinotega’s economy improved and wasn’t so pitiful to the do gooders. Even earlier, we had about a tenth the tourists that Matagalpa got. Most of the reasons people don’t move here is no shopping centers with car parks. And not overrun with Anglophones. International Living tried to get its hooks into Jinotega’s, but the foreigners had a pact that we’d never talk to the local IL correspondent. There are people the city will work for. It’s a lot like a county seat in an agricultural district in the US. I’ve always had good neighbors here. Need at least some Spanish, but there are bilingual Nicaraguans around. Roughly half FSLN and half Libérales. People are working out living together. Friend who visited said it was like 1970s Alabama without the racism. Better food. Italian restaurant named after a libertarian pirate colony, Libertalia. The municipal market is also worth a visit, though I suspect other cities have better ones. Come back some time and I’ll show you around or have a friend do that.

Every creek and river you have shown is disgusting. It really is tragic. We will still visit and keep an open mind, but humans are disgusting ALL OVER the world. And all over the football fields! Ugh!!! It's hard. Too hard. Are there no locals who organize clean up events?beach clean ups? I organized many park clean ups when i lived in Canada There HAS to be some grassroot movements.
@ScottAlanMillerVlog
@ScottAlanMillerVlog Год назад
The rivers are bad like that because of the storms. A lot of this varies by city. Matagalpa is much cleaner, but it is also much richer and is able to enact (and enforce) littering laws.
@ajusa2024
@ajusa2024 Год назад
@@ScottAlanMillerVlog wouldn't be anything to flow into the rivers if it wasn't all thrown on the street to begin with. But I understand. I think Leon, Granada and at a long shot SJDS are the 3 areas we will spend some time (outside of Managua that is). We are NOT city people (having lived and been raised in Toronto and other large cities). We like a quaint town with coffee shops and community, parks, beaches, trails to hike, cleanliness and clean air etc etc We grow most of our food, eat mostly fruit and veg (especially tropical fruits!), and don't need bar life. We eat and live clean. This is what we are looking for anywhere really.
