Do you know if anyone tried creating or developing an option to moderate as an admin with 'guest' speakers? If I want to say host some speakers for a panel and stream the jitsi out as a live broadcast? to be able to control the speaker rubrics and the background without participating in the actual feed, sort of like a director who just sits in the control room and is able to choose what it would look like? Is there a feature to add layers such as graphic banners? anyone had any experience with that? @dottotech
Thanks, Steve. I'm a solopreneur who hates paying for subscriptions when there is a free option! I really loved your tutorial and have now subscribed. I need to play around with the Google Calendar integration and providing future meeting links. This is going to be a great way for me to connect with clients. Keep up the great work!
Never heard of Jitsi. thanks for not only going through the interface, but for going into trouble to doing the test drive, testing different options and showing different scenarios of usage! Huge thanks!
Lol, it so true, I did a video on zoom and then comparing the three main tools and the content has become incredibly popular, I wasn't aware of Jitsi and I'm Canadian like yourself so I'm taking a look now. Happy that you had a positive experience with this open source program where you haven't in the past. Wow to all the other settings!!
I am a member of a computer club and we are using Not so for club meetings during lockdown. We are all impressed with it. Will share this with the other club members.
Hey Steve, another great presentation. One suggestion, have the participants using their smartphones change their camera from portrait view to landscape view before they log in. Be safe.
Love this video. Someone talk to me today about this app and I was searching solid information about it, thanks you.. your video was my winner for understanding the app. Saludos, from Venezuela. I like your style.
A quick note first: The trouble to join is an iOS problem, it happens to Zoom and all other apps because Apple doesn't trust them to give them permission to use Mic and/or Cam. Also, it is a ONE TIME grant permission thing from settings, you can do beforehand; and then you'll join in one click. I am a HUGE fan of Zoom, but sorry if this sounds like cheating! I crush on HARD on smart things like this Jitsi app! It is so smart and amazing! I am thinking about using it to host guests into my AstroGate بوابة الفضاء channel. I share your videos everywhere Steve, you are my mentor and source for good productivity apps out there.
If you are having trouble with app functionality try the 'Launch in web' option when you first open. You then get the desktop version (I prefer this to the app). (I use an Android phone/tablet, presume the same in iPhone/iPad).
I've been using Jitsi for my book group for a month or two. Unless something's changed - don't have time to look now - it only works properly with the Chrome browser. It's worse than that though. I forgot this, clicked on the meeting link and it started in my default browser, Firefox. Then after 20 minutes it crashed, ouch! Enjoyed your presentation, thanks Steve.
Jitsi works with Chromium based browsers, that is, in addistion to Chrome, at least with Opera, Vivaldi, Brave and the new MS Edge. Unfortunatle not with Firefox, for explanations please see github.com/jitsi/jitsi-meet/issues/4758#issuecomment-604463127.
@@ArneLarssonHfors Thanks for the link. I actually read the whole page from top to bottom. If I understand correctly a big part of the problem is FF not implementing some protocol correctly. They developed ways to work around that issue, but also pushed the FF team to resolve some of the issues causing problems for Jitsi. On april 21 they announced FF 76 should work much better. Also support for Safari is being worked on.
I agree, but it would be interesting to see how the quality holds up in larger meetings I wonder if google meat would maintain the quality where Jisi might drop off
Great overview. Thanks much. What I'm finding with Jitsi that I don't with the others is that when you go to the link it opens the camera immediately. I'm used to getting a preview so I can make sure the camera is showing what I want it to before joining the session. I had an embarrassing moment with that one. Did I miss something? How can I set it up to give me a preview first? Also, I heard that, unlike the others, Jitsi allows multiple speakers to be heard at the same time. Is that true?
I've found on the Mac (Catalina) is that with Safari & Firefox, screen sharing options are restricted to sharing the screen only. Using Chrome or Edge instead allows for sharing an application window and/or a browser tab.
Here it is almost a year after you make the video, and only now am I finding out about Jitsi... or you for that matter. Thank you for the intro to the ... I guess you would call it a web-app. New subscriber. :)
Google Meet also allows you to share your tabs via the Cast tab feature now which includes audio - rather than screen sharing, etc. Works quite well. But I prefer Jitsi.
Thank you ver much for this video! It's a nice app but people has to learn to use it! I had a bad experience with Jitsi as no one had a tutorial prior to the meeting and the host was kicking me out of the meeting all the time I was trying to help.
Nice. The only reservation I have, so far, is around the matter of bandwidth. I presume that splitting up using breakout rooms doesn't change the gross bandwidth requirement. More questions after sleep.🤔
Hi...!!! Steve...I'm just starting to go deepen with all these new Conferences tools, like ZOOM, GOOGLE MEET, AND JITSI....could you please tell Me which one do I have to choose to prepare or make classes online...?? Thanks for your soon and cordial reply...Regards.... CARLOS SANTANA from CHILE..
Tested for our Scout Troop, was bombed on the simple name, and even with complex found that if the host leaves the meeting continues with no password required
Hello, have you ever had problems with Jitsi when broadcasting live on youtube? It happened to me, when I tried to broadcast live the message appeared: "all broadcasts are currently busy". Has anyone ever experienced this?
Hello I have an question. We often have meetings and theres a random guy always joining. We dont know whos inviting him or how he gets the link. Is there a way to track him when hes in a meeting or something like that?
Here's a kicker... Zoom was built on Jitsi, then re-branded and commercialized. I think your quality issue is because your not running your own high bandwidth server but riding instead on a loaded open to the community jitsi server that probably has several rooms going on it at once. Jitsi is open source which means a developer can customize it pretty much any way he / she wants.
Open Source is the way to go, theres just no way around it. Once a project has enough traction, this "hive mind" type of deal will inevitably lead to far more sophisticated results. Idk how your "poor experiences" in the past look like, but id like to encourage you to have a good look at Manjaro Linux. With all the stuff RedHat and Valve did over the past couple years, Linux has matured into a more than viable Desktop OS. If you too are sick and tired of BS like WSL2 right out breaking virtualization on your rig, give it a try.
@@DennisBareis And will continue to for years... Open Source literally means "open source"... as in, you can download the code and look at it for yourself if you want. The Linux OS'es all originated as open source and that's one of the reasons there are so many options (flavors, distros, etc.) Open source pretty much runs the internet, so it's not something to fear. We're not talking spyware embedded software like TikTok or corporate big brother tracking apps like Facebook.
one feature that Google Meet has that is lacking in Zoom and Jitsi is an option to turn Captions on or off - this makes Google Meet video conference a better choice for the deaf or hard of hearing
You can switch on closed caption but you need to integrate Jitsi with Google speech recognition. Needs to fettling but it's a feature which is built in
I used Zoom to do my classes.. 40 minute limit just kicks all of us out. I was searching for something like Jitsi. Glad to know more about Jitsi through the video.. Hats off !!
I have looked at this and use it personally. I have found that the limitations such as anyone being able to eject someone from the meeting disappear when you set up your own server. And when you do that for a business, you can integrate it into your web page and phone apps. When you consider the security gains, this beats Zoom.
Before watching this I had never even heard of Jitsi! I showed this video to my team and we have decided to move from zoom to jitsi! thanks for sharing!!!!
I got a text from my sister-in-law that my wife's sisters--spread throughout the country--are planning to sing Happy Birthday to her via Jitsi. I had never heard of Jitsi and found this very informative video. I'm sold!
Thanks for the demo and discussion - very helpful. In early August I participated in a world-wide conference that was run using Jitsi, integrated into a [custom-built?] calendar-type web interface. Over 1800 people participated over 9 days (not all at the same time!) and overall it was a great success. It was for the international language, Esperanto, and our local (Australian) Esperanto Association is seriously thinking of using it for national conference in January 2021.
My son, living 300 kms away, has been bugging me to get this utility. I stumbled on this video today, and hoping my less than stellar technical skills will be up to the challenge. Looks less complicated than Zoom, which I haven't tried yet.
Steve Dotto, great Jitsi demo. I use free Zoom but was going to try Meet but now I will definitely try Jitsi after seeing how elegant it performed during your demo. Many thanks from a Moscow English/Maths now online teacher/tutor to Russians with at least Intermediate English. See you on your next demo.
Very interesting! Does the Jitsi mobile app require attendees to create an account or can they join a meeting like Zoom without having to create an account?
Excellent review! Thanks! I have used Jitsi and Zoom. The one issue I've had in Jitsi is that I can't become the administer and have sole control to prevent others from sharing screens, mute them, kick them out, etc. Maybe that's what everyone follow me does. There are number of excellent open source programs and I'd love to see reviews of them.
@@dottotech For the most part I'm able to use the google suite for 95% of what I do. If I need Word compatibility I used the LibreOffice suite which is free and does an excellent job translating the macros and format of Word. As well once every couple of months I need a bit more sophisticated graphic tool (I used to use Corel Draw) to create a graphic or something. I used Inkscape, which is an amazing tool with great internet support and not the hefty price tag of Adobe. I'm fortunate to have a secretary who uses Publisher, but if I need to do something quick in the Publishing area I use Scribus. You might have already done a video on VLC which is use to view video content. I don't do video editing but there are several programs that would be good for those who are a couple times a year I need a blunt tool video editor folks like me. Thanks for asking!
Same for iPadOS and macOS too. But this is a plus to me. I had to use Skype for three workshops I recently had to attend virtually and the fact that the presenter can turn cameras off and on without asking you bugs me and I hate being on camera or being photographed, so I just didn't allow Skype access to my MacBook's camera, just the microphone.
I discovered that product when I was a freelancer is Paris. If I remember things well, the creator was a Bulgarian guy doing his Phd in in Strasbourg. (+/-2005) I was completely bashed by what this student had developed compared to the then expensive ruling Webex. I tried to convince some of my clients to stop shelling out money to Webex, but for the same reasons you mention Steve.... Open Source was not their cup of tea. At the end of the day I sold more consultancy implementing crappy proprietary Windows applications. Simply could not live on Linux and Open Source at that time
As others have mentioned, the big downside to Jitsi is that it only works reliably in the Chrome browser, so that will be a limiting factor for some users if they aren't amenable to using Chrome.
I really like your channel your videos are so enlightening, thank you. I used Jitsi first time last Sunday and it was really good. I am an avid user of Zoom and I think Zoom is great but like you I don't mind jumping onto a Jitsi meeting.
Can we pin or enlarge the screen of one or two participants even though they are not speaking, as I have to hold yoga classes and I want to see closely the postures
I droped in, by chance, when looking on youtube for jitsi experiences, and even tho english is not my native language, nevertheless i found myself whatching your youtube video from start to end, you got that way to talk that mesmerize people listening to what youre saying, keep up the good work.
I've been really struggling with Zoom. I work with adults with developmental disabilities and we are doing online events such as Karaoke. Zoom had recently stopped allowing the host to unmute the participants. I understand this is for security reasons, but it makes it really difficult when I am working with my clients that don't know how to unmute themselves. Those clients are usually the ones whose parents or caregiver help log them into the meeting, but are unable to sit in the meeting with us to control unmuting. Does Jitsi have the option to unmute others? Also, how is their customer service? I tried calling Zoom to talk to them about the issue and they kept kicking me out of the call because I didn't type the numbers they wanted me to type fast enough. I am also concerned about Zoom's privacy.
For participants in calls who are not very tech-savvy (e.g. the elderly), even finding the mute button is too much for them to achieve; it would be a better user experience if the person establishing the session could unmute people under these circumstances. Perhaps, to address the privacy concern, the client could pop up an approval dialog box saying something like "The organiser of this call would like to unmute you: do you accept this? YES / NO".
I have heard of Jitsi before, and there is bluejeans but I agree, it is better than Google Meet by far. As you said in an earlier video, there are extensions you can install on Chrome but jee whiz, not everyone has the ability to do that so you limit your particants if you rely on them getting extensions. I like push to talk and gridview.
Thank you for this demonstration. Two comments / questions: 1) From what I could see, anyone can kick anyone else out of a Jitsi meeting. Is this still true? Cannot the person initiating the meeting control this at least? 2) I deal with a number of older people and the problems with non-Chrome type browsers is a serious limitation. We kept getting "browser not supported" messages from those using Firefox. Is there any cure to this shortcoming as yet? Thanks to all the commentators for their inputs.
@@crossleydd42 If this is true, it is a serious limitation, especially for my family, as I have pushed them into Firefox for quite some time. This seems a real shame, because otherwise this appears to be an excellent communications program.
Great video. Been trying to find something other than Skype, Google or zoom to have family conferences since I live abroad. Thanks again! Greetings from Sweden!
Hello! Thank you so much for the informative video. For some reason, I don't see the option (the "i" icon) which would generate a link to share on RU-vid. Any thoughts on that?!
I discovered this in March 2022. I'm wondering how the audio quality would sound if a person on the other end would use a proper microphone. Have you tested this if this would be interesting for Podcasters and if the audio quality is better than Zoom?
I've had quite a good experience with Jitsi since starting to use it a few weeks ago. You can secure a meeting against unwanted intruders by password-protecting it. It may be that they've done some work on the chat box, since it seems to be fairly good now. I've also not experienced the sound dropping out at all.
Do you know if it is possible to use Jitsi Meet alongside of a different audio platform--such as Cleanfeed, or Source-Connect Now? The reason I ask this is because I am looking for something to give me better audio quality than I am currently getting with Zoom in order to teach singing lessons online. The audio quality actually matters more than the video (I am prepared to give up some video quality as long as I can have really good audio--that is, audio with clarity, minimal lag time, and no drop-out of higher frequencies (which frequently happens on Zoom!) Would appreciate your response on this...
Heather Dufault just had my voice lesson on Jitsi where we have been using Zoom. My teacher was able to play the piano accompaniment while I was singing which was not possible with Zoom. Also there was less latency in Jitsi. I was using an iPad. My voice teacher was using a computer. Loved my lesson on Jitsi!
I watched the video in parts due to interruptions behind me, but I found your instructions great! Never heard of it before now. I am hoping family and friends will try it with me! Thanks!
Hi, I want to create a tutoring website where tutors can register and offer live 1-on-1 sessions, 20-30 mins with students. So, in ther words THEY offer a live stream as product/service on MY website. After students/parents pay for the the session the live video can start, they can join the session. Is that possible? Thanx, stay safe 😉
@@dottotech Thanx for the reply :) I only asked as most youtube videos only show the setup process from the website owners perspective. No one shows if a third party (registered member) can setup video chats or offer them as products on a woocommerce website.
I'm a Resarch intern in a Technological Center of my Country (Angola), and I heard about Jitsi from a sister of mine. Now, with your presentation, I'm fixed about the choice I had to make between Jitsi, Zoom and Teamlink. Today, I can tell you that I'll use Jitsi. Thank's a lot !
