Taking the back is one of the biggest goals in a ground grappling. Here are quite a few options of how to take your opponent's back from different positions and different energies. There are of course many other options and scenarios, but these are some very useful ones to know to for an overall understanding of setting up and executing this important transition.

Honestly whoever came up with the elbow escape counter roll back take is a genius. It still bends my mind to think about these… and I’m not a beginner. #bjjismagic

Especially as a smaller guy, the advantage of getting to the back can make all the difference, and the more basic -- or, old school I guess -- non-sport techniques can be applied to self-defense or MMA as well. Good selection and well taught. Thanks a million! ¡Muchísimas gracias y un abrazo de Texas! Muito obrigado!

Thank you for the fine techniques. I was wondering if you could elaborate on your hook positioning concept for overhook vs underhook back control which you briefly mentioned? I find the single hook with legs crossed behind absolutely cements the guys hips. Only problem is the roll away (and of course points) which many people are afraid to do. On a side note, I visited your school in Paducah some years back as a white belt. You were kind enough to roll with a visiting newbe. Thank you. I’m now a brown belt. I actually emailed you guys with non permanent suggestions on how to keep your mats from sliding. Guess you solved that.
@KnightJiuJitsu
@KnightJiuJitsu 6 лет назад
Hey Chris! Great to hear from you and congrats on getting to brown belt! That was some time ago. If I understand what you're saying about the overhook/underhook concept, I like the crossed ankles between the legs on the overhook side and more of a standard configuration on the underhook side. I prefer taking him to the underhook side because there are more sub opportunities (RNC, armbar, rear mount triangle, etc). I also think it's a lot harder for him to escape the underhook side, so it feels more secure for me and buys me more time. Hope that makes sense. Keep in touch, bro!

@KnightJiuJitsu
@KnightJiuJitsu 6 лет назад
I think going to the back, particularly from top positions, is always a good idea because it often requires you to move yourself more than the opponent - good for smaller players.

I would like to see more jujitsu for MMA/street like some videos you made in the past. After all it was a champion like Roger Gracie and not a newbie like me that said "80% of jujitsu is useless in MMA". That remaining 20% is what I would like to see more often and to learn. But maybe it is jut me, so thanks for your great teaching anyway...

@KnightJiuJitsu

Thank you! And yes it can, but the lack of grips make it harder to create the opening to drop the hooks in. Otherwise, it is still very valid no gi.

Thanks for all your videos. How can I defend against somebody, particularly a girl, climbing my back and putting her hooks in me?
@KnightJiuJitsu
@KnightJiuJitsu 5 лет назад
Thank you for watching them! And why particularly a girl? It’s not an easy answer, but if I had to suggest, I would say to get into that position as much as possible in training and practice implementing strategies until you can make something functional work for you consistently.
@maxwillems8200
@maxwillems8200 6 лет назад
Hey man, I've had this question for a long, long time, but I can't really ask this one to my coach, as he can't really do anything about it. I currently have 2 BJJ lessons per week, 1 judo lesson in which we also do alot of BJJ (my judo coach is also a purple belt BJJ, so he implements that too) and one regular japanese jiu jitsu lesson in which we sometimes focus on punches and kicks, and sometimes we focus on bjj techniques and takedowns etc. So that makes 2 real ground-based lessons, and 2 lessons in which we "might" do some BJJ. I'm wondering if that's enough. I don't really have a choise too, as my current gym is the only gym that gives BJJ lessons in the vicinity. In my opinion, you're pretty good and so I was wondering how many times per week you used to train.
@KnightJiuJitsu
@KnightJiuJitsu 6 лет назад
Thank you for asking me. I think training a couple of classes a week can be sufficient. I have gone through periods where I was training nearly every day and periods where I was only training a few hours a week. But I’ve been at this a long time. I think a couple times a week will yield improvement. I would suggest trying to get some training time with whomever you can outside of class time too, to supplement, if that’s a possibility. Just some rolling time with friends if nothing else. Keep at it!
