Did this at work one time... a bunch of technical guys were discussing an issue and my manager was kind of clueless... I walked up and told him "Excuse me sir, I speak Jive..." Both my boss and the tech guys about fell over laughing.
The best part of this is those two guys are actual best friends and have been talking this Jive language since high school. So when they read for the part the directors could not stop laughing and pretty much hired them on the spot. They are still friends today.
@@justmagicmostly- Serves no purpose to make that up. I actually saw other RU-vid videos of the directors, and the actors saying the same. It was a while ago so I doubt I can think of the title.
You're right. I googled it later and read up a bunch about it myself. Sounded like bullshit (most things you read on the internet are), but you're right! It was fun reading about how the actors came up with this scene, so thanks for causing me to dig into it further.
I saw an interview with her, where she rememberd the two guys sitting down with her to practice the intonation and inflections. I think she did a pretty good job
What makes this scene so absolutely effective is the both Actors have a rhythm and emphasis on parts of the lines that does not come off fake or forced , They are absolutely natural with the flow becuz they both came up with it , and they used alot of terms that were absolutely obscure as opposed to more known phrases like " Jive Turkey " , " Right On " ...ect
Not just any grown woman, but the MOM FROM LEAVE IT TO BEAVER, ONE OF THE SAFEST FAMILY FRIENDLY SHOWS IN THE WORLD. The casting is SO FUCKING BRILLIANT
@@HyperHexagoner yeah, it absolutely was. Then add the other bigger names of the cast... This movie basically kickstarted Leslie Nielsens second career. He (and Robert Stack, the Captain etc) were cast specifically because they had all been dramatic actors. They were picked to play these ridiculous slapstick jokes as straight as they would as if it was a serious movie. It's so freaking perfect.
In 1980 these jive-talking scenes made me laugh so hard I was afraid they were going to throw me out of the theater. 43 years later they're still some of the funniest bits I've ever seen.
Howard Glen - Was you dropped on your head as a baby? Why did you write "Those two African Americans"? Instead of like a mentally healthy person just simply write "The two guys helped..."? Or used their names like you did for Barbara? Sometimes people (not saying you) do this to dehumanize people not of their race. They make them a label "African American" but with their race they use the person name or something like "guys".
The fact that it was June Cleaver - from possibly the whitest family ever, is what made it funny. Ward, don't you think you were a little hard on the Beaver last night.
Actually, the Cleavers were VERY white, but, they were pretty goofy & fun to watch too, with Beaver, Wally, Eddie Haskell,, the fat kid, etc. . There were some other white shows back then that were BORINGLY white. Ugh!

I just watched this again, the last time being 15 years ago. You’re right! It’s so wonderfully stupidly funny 😂 Some of the humor I didn’t catch before but did this time.
Because it's hard for many white people to relate to the black dialect and the whole point of the subtitles was to make it more appealing and relatable to white people.

Old Lady: Give me a break sir! *Both argue old lady leaves dismayed* Old Lady: If you do not want assistance, then you will get no assistance...These Jive Gentlemen have no sense what so ever!
So many great scenes in this movie, but this one was and is my favorite. Still funny years later. My favorite was that "Shit' translated into " Golly".
On the early 2000s DVD version of this movie, there are some cast interviews included. It has one with these two guys, and they're speaking regular English, but it has Jive subtitles down below! Hilarious.

I’m Black, and I don’t understand what they’re saying. It could be regional, or it could be a combination of the fact that is the late 70s, or a combination of both. That said, this movie was funny as hell!
@@fist-of-doom487 I know what Jive and Slang is. I am not sure that you read my post carefully. I’m not that young, where I don’t remember movies and slang from this time period. So, my post was not failing to understand generational slang and culture. I posted my comment to shed light on the REGIONAL and CULTURAL differences, and how they vary from city to city. Most people forget that slang and culture varies from city to city and region to region when it comes to non-White culture. Along with that will include accents varying from city to city among non-White culture. I’ve done a ton of traveling, and I find that many Whites can easily recognize these differences with White culture, such White Bostonian culture being compared to White Californian or White Chicagoan culture. The same is never taken into consideration for Black culture, Asian culture, Hispanic culture, and so forth. “Black slang and culture” is just lumped into one category. Basically, the shit that might be common with Blacks in LA won’t be the same thing done by Blacks in Philly, Chicago, or Florida. There are regional and cultural differences that mainstream Hollywood fails to take in consideration. That said, the SOLE reason that I didn’t understand them was because those men were saying some shit that I wasn’t familiar with, due to REGIONAL and CULTURAL differences. Don’t get me wrong, as this scene was funny as hell, with the movie being very iconic. However, they used REGIONAL slang that was popular in another city, and not mine.
At a company I worked at 20+ years ago, I had the company's web proxy gateway "jive" all the text on web sites for an April Fools morning. 😂 (I was careful to ensure that the cached pages were not "jived")

It's a pretty hilarious story actually. When these two guys were up for the role, they had to read what ZAZ put together in their version of how a jive conversation would go. Apparently these guy laughed at it then proceeded to do their own shtick and were hired on the spot.
Im 19 now but ever since I was 6 and my mom asked me if I ever needed help knowing I did she would always say to me “Chump don’t want the help Chump don’t get the help” this is mine and hers favorite movie.
I used to have the LP that was released in conjunction with this movie. One time I decided to memorize this scene's dialogue. I listened to it again and again, then wrote it out [phonetically when necessary] and memorized it. I can still recite it perfectly.
A Higgs Boson goes into a church where the priest immediately tries to kick him out, telling him "God particles aren't welcome here, only God", to which the Higgs Boson replies "but father, you simply can't have mass without me".
Actually it was those 2 black guys who improvished the whole dialogue, and they taught June Cleaver actress Barbara Billingsley what to say and how to say it.
