Andy i had a very similar problem with the so called ghost voltages, but mine were occurring on the shunt. I found that the reason was the victron shunt was before the bms, and the smartsolar being after the bms, the diy ve direct to usb cables do not have an isolated ground! So any voltage drop across the bms or cables, will mean that some ground current will go through the ground of the ve direct port, through the ras-pi, and into other ve direct ports on the other devices! The fix, was to buy the genuine ve direct to usb cables for $29 each from battery central brisbane at acacia ridge, they were very helpful! This fixed my incorrect victron readings and now everything works great. You probably only need to replace one of your diy cables with a genuine one as that should remove the ground loop. The genuine cables have an isolated ground, the diy cables do not!
@OffGridGarageAustralia
@OffGridGarageAustralia 2 года назад
Thanks Lexi, that is a very good point. I was thinking about the ground loop due to the cable and adapters we made. That could in deed be the reason for it. There are isolated adapters out there, I'll show them in a separate video and how to install them. Thanks for sharing!

Congrats for 30k subscribers and congrats for the two winners. Nice to see my name on the wheel. Looks like autum is on its way to winter with a lot of rain in Australia. 😉 On the other side of the planet we had our first really hot days with about 30 °C in Germany, so we are going straight in direction of summer. I had to water some parts of my garden and the little male goat of my neighbor was bleating and grumbling, because I successfully blocked the hole in the fence which he has used three times this day to visit me. Well, it seems that the clover on my ground tastes much better than the gras on the neigbours ground. 😉😁😂

Awesome Andy, another great video, keep up the great work. This is super interesting as I have one of these BMS on the way from China. (So glad the floods didn’t affect you too much). On the topic of active balancing: I fitted an active balancer on my 400Ah caravan bank two years ago after around four years with no balancer, and whilst it kept the balance great, I certainly notice a lot of “phantom drain”. When my JK BMS arrives I will remove the active balancer.
@OffGridGarageAustralia
@OffGridGarageAustralia 2 года назад
Thanks, Dave. The balancers should not use much power, like ~10ma when active. Maybe it's faulty. Yeah remove it and see if this is the problem. You probably only ever need it once a year for maintenance...
@FutureSystem738
@FutureSystem738 2 года назад
@@OffGridGarageAustralia Thanks Andy- yeah I’m not sure what’s consuming a bit of power, but suspect the active balancer as that’s when I started noticing it. Wild “educated” guess, I think something is constantly chewing around 250-300mA, which also shows up occasionally on the Victron smart shunt. It’s not a big deal when we’re using it daily, but just a bit annoying for storage. I can’t access the battery compartment when the van is squeezed in, and stowed in it’s garage so that doesn’t exactly help much- how I wish it was in a proper shed. Anyway, it’s not a deal breaker, just something I need to watch. Cheers

Glad that you shared that story about the Shenzen Basen cell age and quality cause 2 years old is never grade A cause 3 months not sold and the manufacturer sells them already as Grade B just due to its age. 3 months not 2 or 3 years. And from the factory auction the chinese deal lottery starts. Here in Germany we had also some issues recently with ShenzenBasen and the quality when for example a new customer got first 8 cells of good quality and his second order with a bigger amount of 32 or so was more or less a mix of mediocre stuff. Good to hear from your observations and I guess they now will run in a lot of trouble with many customers scanning the qr codes and comparing those with the claim that they had gotten A Grade cells.

Solar Optimisers are basically DC-DC boosters. So basically every panel outputs the same voltage disregarding shadows/dirt/temperature. Of course the current will lower. Not sure but it seems some of them have some kind of mppt algorithm before the booster section. In the end the panels will act like one huge panel, not anymore like a string or array. The big question is: how high/low is the efficiency of those optimisers? PS: the experimental part of this channel is what makes it unique and valuable!
@OlanFantaziya
@OlanFantaziya 2 года назад
Isn't it that they stabelise the current and not the voltage? Voltage makes no sense to me because the voltage of an pv cell is nearly stable in shadow situations. The problem is that a shaded cell isnt "delivering" any current. The maximum current of a string is defined by the weakest cell. If you look at the voltage/current curves of an mppt you will see that the voltage is nearly stable but the current is changing on the pv side. Optimizers are trying to stabelise the current of shaded panels and reduce the voltage. So that stronger modules can deliver the full current 😉 The substitute model of an pv module is a current source.
@photocromax
@photocromax 2 года назад
@@OlanFantaziya probably you are right. So the optimiser does the buck conversion to the single panel to let more current pass through the string. But what happens when more strings become an array? One string with lower voltage will clamp the others down. Maybe the optimiser is doing both buck and boost conversion depending on where is installed. It could sense back-feed from the other strings and increase its voltage till back-feed is equalised. Probably they are more clever than a simple DC-DC regulator. Btw, I'm sure Andy will uncover and dirty secret those "appliances" have.
@OlanFantaziya
@OlanFantaziya 2 года назад

@OffGridGarageAustralia
@OffGridGarageAustralia 2 года назад
I read they can be used without the inverters... we will see.
@thomasfrach413
@thomasfrach413 2 года назад
Maybe what you have is a newer version of the optimizer, but afaik you will need a SE inverter as it controls the system. The best thing about the SE system is added safety as it can detect arcing and turn off the system to prevent fire. Also, when you switch off the inverter, all modules switch their outputs to 1V so the string voltage becomes equal to the number of panels and you can safely work on the system. You also get interesting per panel monitoring data. I have 30 panels with SE running since 2016 without problems. So far only one optimizer failed and had to be replaced and I noticed only by looking at the panel stats. Downside is the added cost...

Great vid as always Andy & congrats on ur 30k Subs. I am looking forward to seeing ur tests and results of the optimisers vs micro inverters, wasn’t sure how they worked, but have picked up a bit from the comments here, so this will be some interesting stuff. I saw ur ghost voltage vid, will havta reveiw that again, ur inducing a voltage/current thru ur 240v & PV wiring in the roof area to some degree tho aren’t you?, where the different cables are running close together causing ur LED floodlight to stay on in nightlight mode which could cause some type of a feedback on the PV side, in YOUR case, was my first guess, but I also noticed I had similar Ghost voltages at night of 300-500mv all night, no moon, pitch black n cloudy as well, until I put a big cap on the PV side as an experiment, 64v cap, 60vocPV, 12v system, renogy 40a mppt controller, I connected it on a sunnyish afternoon around 1;30pm, just before some cloud come over, the system and cap at 51v, & when I connected the cap the system was producing the most I had seen previously, at about 30-37amps from the PV’s, well it suddenly shot up to 42Amps for the next 45 mins or so as cloud had come over soon after I connected the caps, & sustained this for some time, slowly decreasing the amps down as the cp voltage slowly dropped to a steady 4-6a @ 15v after a few hrs by 4pm while it was very cloudy all afternoon, at 6pm it was still delivering 2A, anyhow, as it turned out the caps kept the system voltage up to 13.7 volts all night on the PV side & delivered a steady 1-.8 amp input till after midnight recharging my system to 100% by 8 pm again, from 96-97% earlier just after having a microwave dinner, coffee, etc. I am going too keep playing with these capacitors on both sides of this system as I am finding a number of positive ways they can be used to help increase overall solar yield, & they are great near ur inverters too of course. Thought some of ur viewers may have some interest in this sort of experimenting. Thanks for all ur great vids Andy, Cheers All!

Same model everything, each has a bank of solar panels to it, What would happen if you connect all the panels together and then both inverters run of the 1 large array, Would it pull more kw per day, will you pop the panels, will it cause a nuclear melt down in the inverters..... Please advise, cause I suspect if it goes wrong it will be a very expensive mistake I make. Congrats on the 30k subs.

I don't really think a 2kw inverter is a micro inverter. Would be better to use small Enphase inverters that are 350-500w and are designed for 1 per panel. Solaredge optimizes as far as I know cannot be used without a solaredge edge inverter. It should stay in rapid shutdown mode always. Tigo makes optimizers that you can use stand alone but you can't use any optimizers with Victron MPPTs as the MPPT will get damaged. The RS 450/100 might be the exception. Are you using Victron isolated VE.Direct to USB converters? If the connection is non isolated you will get random voltages on your MPPTs as they switch the negative side of the PV input and using a non isolated cable may cause the MPPT to see strange voltages.

Is this Micro inverter capable of reducing the output power with the rise of AC frequency? If not it's not very suitable for victron ac coupling because it will start to oszillate when your battery's are full. The optimizers from solar edge only work in combination with a solar edge inverter...

I bought some LF304Ah cells and are happy with them. Hovever I can't use them at the moment, I am waiting on my inverter to ship. How do I put them into a storage charge with my ZKEtech 40Amp tester. If I set the voltage to say 3.2V when do I stop the charge i.e What do I enter into the "cutoff current" to finish the charge. Love the channel by the way and subscribed. Try to watch all the epesodes I can fit in. Really hope someone can help!

@OffGridGarageAustralia
@OffGridGarageAustralia 2 года назад
That should not be very difficult. As per specs of most LFP batteries they can be stored at 50-60% SOC for months without being connected to any charger. Voltage cannot be used to find this spot because of the flat charge and discharge curve. 3.2V can be anything from 20%-70%SOC. I have a lot of videos on this channel going over this topic of charging and discharging LFP. They are very different to other battery types. These videos for example explain that topic quite good I think and give you a lot of information: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pijPu7t-akM.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qZg4Jxftw-c.html

solaredge optimisers only work when you have a solaredge inverter or you need the special independent optimization (IndOP™) serie to work with other brands. but you lose the function that you can readout the power output of individual panels (no communication), this only works it you have a soleredge inverter. if a 'normal' solaredge optimiers doesnt get the ok signal from a solaredge inverter they only output the 1volt output signal (so no power out of the optimisers), this is done for safety. actually in (larger) installations this kind of safety shutoff (when for instance there is a isolation failure) can be required so shut off all power to a safe level.

I'm thinking about building a few 1kw turbines, to hopefully get 300-700 a from normally, and 1k- 1500 in wind storms, probably using a centrefugal brake, to slow the turning if it exceeds safe speeds, I would want to use with a midnite classic 150 controller, with the peak voltage around, 120vdc, with a safety keeping it under 130vdc, here the last couple years there have been plenty of wind to generate plenty of power! Along with solar it should keep my 40kwh bank charged, happy charging! 👍

SolarEdge "Optimizers" are MPP Trackers. Don't mix it up with Victron gear :) The Smartsolar is goint to do MPPT and the SolarEdge will also do MPPT so you will not get any usable Output :) The SolarEdge Inverters do only Inverting no MPPT just like the Multiplus II :)
@ShaneFromSA
@ShaneFromSA 2 года назад
That is not exactly true, the Solaredge inverters do actually track. The optimizes find MPP for a panel but the inverter finds MPP for system and work together to generate power.
@mikegamsjager8944
@mikegamsjager8944 2 года назад
@@ShaneFromSA Thats not exactly true :) Because the SolarEdge "Optimizer" also shuts down the Modules in Case of Fire ( controllable ) and removes the Panel from the String in case of Shading. But does the MPPT. The SolarEde has no Tracker inside :)
@ShaneFromSA
@ShaneFromSA 2 года назад
@@mikegamsjager8944 The optimizer is an MPPT for the panel it is connected to. Also is shaded conditions it doesn't remove the panel from the string that panel continues to provide power, it will just lower it's output voltage to not effect the loop current. This is a grid-tie inverter, no grid-tie inverter has an MPPT as hardware. You change the output power of the inverter to track. If solaredge didn't track in the inverter it would overdraw from the panels and the DC voltage would collapse. Try run a Multiplus-ii with no battery attached this is exactly what happens.
@mikegamsjager8944
@mikegamsjager8944 2 года назад
@@ShaneFromSA No mixing up Things. The Multiplus II does not run without Batterys. It was a bit a bad comparision. If you find a panel wich will work within 45 and 54 Volt you could use a MP without a battery ( Theoreticaly ). But no device would do Tracking in this setup. The SolarEdge Optimizers does bypass the String to the shaded Panel. If the Panel gets shaded it would deliver almost the right Volt but it will not produce or to low amp's. So therefore the SolarEdge would work like a ByPass Diode. Kind of :) But as i said the Tracking is done by the SolarEdge "Optimizer" as well as the monitoring ( over PLC ). The Tracking an limiting of the SolarEdge inverter happens at the optimizer level.
@ShaneFromSA
@ShaneFromSA 2 года назад
@@mikegamsjager8944 For your experiment you can have PV -> Victron MPPT -> Multiplus-ii, you can actually run this setup and as load your load or export is less than PV the system will be fine but it will not be optimal because as you can't get close to PV max power without the DC bus collapsing because any type of overshot will collapse the DC bus as you are trying to use energy that isn't there. The Solaredge optimizer is a DC-DC. You can put DC-DC in series and run power through them even when they are off in most cases. DC-DC don't respond like panels which increase there resistance with low irradiance. There is no need to bypass, rather you can convert the panels output of 40v 2amp to 8v 10A using the DC-DC. The Solaredge inverter still has to track and run at MPP so that it doesn't use more power than what is available, if it would the DC voltage would collapse. The tracking algorithm is going to keep loop voltages at some optimal and if loop voltage rises it will export more and if loop voltage drops it will reduce export. It has to track if it doesn't then it will have no way of knowing how much energy to export, the optimizes do have coms but it is way to slow for actually controlling the inverter.

I am now retired, but in my professional life I have always had to deal with earthing and equipotential bonding problems. Especially fault currents caused by earth loops cause problems. The cause in Victron systems seems to be that the bus connections are not designed potential-free - hence the regulation never to disconnect "minus" lines. The solution: consistently connect all "minus" lines to an "earthing" point (16mm² or more) in a star configuration, and then connect this to a real foundation earthing.
