An example of how good this BMS really is. I installed 32 EVE 280 cells with no top balancing, hoping the JK BMS with active balancing would do it. The cells varied from 3.1 to 3.4 VDC. Three days later, the difference is 7 MV. Great product Andy, thanks for the recommendation.

Hi Andy, in my opinion the Con.Wire Res. ist the resistance of your cell wiring. The BMS is able to calculate the "real" voltage of the battery because there is a voltage drop that becomes more important on higher currents e.g. 50A and higher. The voltage drop may be some mV but it is important, because the polarity will change while charging or discharging. so it must be added or subtracted from the cell voltage! greetings from Germany!!
@bjorn_moren
@bjorn_moren 10 месяцев назад
The cell wiring (bus bars) is in the order of 1 mOhm. It is probably even less than the internal resistance of the cell, which is around 0.25 mOhm. The Con Wire Res values on the screen look like around 150 mOhm, so they can't be the bus bars, they must be the balancing wires.

Thanks for this video. I couldve guessed the functions of 80% of these parameters, but it's very valuable to know exactly what I have control over, as well as within what range they should be set to. I find it very interesting that the balance trigger voltage on mine was set to 3.0V by default. That's 10%!

Hi Andy, Thanks for your very informative videos and reviews. I did a conversion from lead acid to 16 x EVE 304Ah cells in my G-Wiz EV using the JKBMS 20S - I did this about a year ago, and watched your videos to help me decide which kit to buy. Since winter time, I'm having issues with some of my cells, probably due to stress and low temperatures affecting performance. The "SOC" on the display is basically correct, but on my vehicle when I go below 40% soc, one of the cells starts to underperform, usually when the heater is on, I'm accellerating hard and going uphill... momentarily dropping below the cut-off voltage of 2.45 and the cut-off engages, stopping the car, a few seconds later, the voltage increases and it works again, I obviously turn off the heating and acellerate more gently. The other cells are obviously all ok, being over 3v. I was wondering if its possible to change the "SOC" so 0% is at the real level of 40% where my cell starts to play up. How could I do this? perhaps change the cell capacity value lower? I've ordered a replacement cell ... but I'm also mulling over adding another cell so its 17 in series to help.

Another great video. Completed my battery about 6 months ago and wanted a JK BMS but at that time they didn't have one for 4s. I went with the Overkill (JBD) and so far it is working well and the cells are staying well balanced so far. Nice and informative video. Thank you very much. Connection wire resistance may be important when the balance happens. Balance current goes through those small wires and there will be a voltage drop when ~2 amps goes through them. And if we set up a correct resistance of them, then BMS can calulate the individual battery voltage by adding them to the messuring voltage of a cell.

I cut the sense wires to different lengths, to neaten up the mess on top of my battery and of course it does show differentiated resistance values on the status tab. There was a bit of a debate on the forum regarding the wisdom of cutting the sense wires of BMS's, however it seems to be functioning perfectly. (WHEW! this first time builder thought id made a mistake...) However, the question of the settable resistance values on the settings tab is one i'd sure like to have answered... thanks Andy!

Thanks Kelly, perfectly fine to shorten or extend the balance cables. There is no downside to that. The BMS is either measuring cell voltage or balancing but never at the same time, so cable length is not an issue.

First of all, your videos are amazing Andy! SO SO helpful that you test all these BMS's so we don't have to! And you explain so much. So many of the tricks and traps around battery charging and balancing. Great stuff, thank you! I'm getting confused though. You have a video demonstrating how active balancing can actually unbalance your cells because it is always on. Then we have the JBD Muller Edition BMS which turns off its active balancer when it's not needed, supplanting the JK BMS at the top of the BMS pile. Problem solved. Now I see this video for the JK BMS settings, which let you set the balance start voltage to 3.45v.... why is the turn off feature on the Muller BMS any different from this ability on the JK? Does this mean the main difference between the muller BMS and this one is just the maximum discharge current (250 vs 200(ish)) and the active balancing current (5A vs 2A)?? Many thanks from the UK!

I figured out what the cell wire resistance is. It's the resistance placed on the wires so the bms can remember the cells out of balance difference. When you have cells of un equal WH duringg initial top balance those values get tuned so next time you charge up you don't get cell run away..
@thomasbreth7991
@thomasbreth7991 Год назад
The only thing that makes sense with the connector resistance-table is to compensate the voltage-drop caused by the resistance of the power-connectors between the battery-cells/blocks. In my job i am specialist for UPS and have to take care of about 3000 battery-buffered systems in a big chemical factory. We do a lot of capacity probes with single block measurements and to evaluate the results it is nescessary to know which batteries are connected with longer connectors than others (e.g. to pass over to another level in the battery-rack). For there is only one sense-wire for measuring the plus-pole of one and minus-pole of the next battery, you always measure the voltage of one block/cell plus the voltage-drop of one power-connector. And this voltage-drop is not negligible... e.g. one connector only 40cm longer than the others in a system with 70mm² connectors will already cause about 5mV higher voltage drop at 50A resulting in 5mV less cell-voltage measured and - if not compensated - falsifies the state of health-judgement.

I bought an inexpensive dc charger from Amazon, but I didn't have much luck. So I assembled the battery and wired in the bms. I attached my Lithium battery charger to get a top balance. It won't charge past 3.34v/cell the AH rating sits at 198ah. The voltage is 53.56, which is 97% charged.

Amazing video Andy, finally I have got my battery ready to calibrate the BMS, all due to your instructions. I got a JK BMS for 24v which was the only one at the time, I did want 12v, but I have used the buck converter to get the 24v. Did the 7v short trick (thank you) to get it started. Using the software on my iPhone on the status screen, I can only see half the screen, the other half disappears under the settings screen, might be due to the version of iPhone. The only other thing is that it will not let me change the Charge UTP setting and it defaults to -20 degrees! It will never get that cold here in WA but it does get down to freezing especially outside and early morning. I can change most settings which I did not think I would be able to on the iPhone, I thought I had to pay for that. Oh well am now a little bit further down the road on the journey. Thanks so much for all your nerdyness😎

Thanks a lot for your kind comment and words, Jackie. That is great to read and I'm always pleased if I can inspire people following their own projects. Version 4.7.4 is the newest one I believe. Not sure why it does not let you change that parameter. Do you get frost in winter near the battery, is this really a concern?

@@OffGridGarageAustralia I have now obtained a disused Samsung phone and this is what I will be using as I get the full page of info and can see all the parameters when scrolling. I downloaded the latest version V4.8.2 - woopee it now changes the UTP, we are in the hills outside of Perth and it is always 1 deg cooler up here...lol - probably do get the odd frost, YES you do inspire me, I am a bit of a chronic DIYer but it is great to be able to collaborate with other likeminded people. There is always stuff to learn and it is what makes the world go around! All I need now is to be able to see what my battery is doing over the internet, when I am away. But I do not have any Victron stuff, my battery is basically providing off grid power to my aquaponic setup, idea being power outages will not kill my fish! Thanks Andy.

37:57 "User Private Data" This is a ONE-TIME user changeable data. You can enter a string and it will be made PERMANENT! What use for? Use as a signature like "Andy's JK BMS" such that if stolen you know it is yours. Or Battery name like "JK BMS Bank #1". So when you have multiple JK BMSs around and you want to know which JK you are viewing, just go over here. I repeat, this can only be changed ONCE.

Like always! Great video! Thank you for that! A remark to the calibration of the current value. In the beginning I had the same issue. But the reason for that was the load I used... An inverter... And this pulls not a constant current from the battery. The current has high high ripple with twice the grid frequency. At the end I used a large pure DC load with high current and repeat the calibration. Than it works perfectly and I get a good accuracy for the current measurement. Another point I did not understand is the over current protection of the BMS: I can understand that if I draw only a little bit over the defined limit the time until the BMS switches of takes for example 30s (when set to this value). But what happens if I draw for example twice the defined over current limit? Takes it the same time for switching off? This could be dangerous. What is needed here is a fuse characteristic: The higher the over current is the shorter the switch off time should be. Maybe anybody knows something about this? Or this would be an interesting test for Andy 😉? But again, thanks for your interesting videos!
@OffGridGarageAustralia
@OffGridGarageAustralia 2 года назад
Thanks Andi, that is absolutely correct and the ripple effect can be the cause for the calibration issue of the JK-BMS. Usually you just don't have any other loads you could connect to a 48V battery. The second point of your question is what I was asking for in my video as well. In case of a short for example, how does the JK determine that? In other BMS's (the QUCC or JBD), I can define a current threshold for a 'short' and a reaction time for the BMS to shut off. Totally agree with you here, that is a very missing setting in the BMS. I'll take this back to Hankzor and see what they say...

Since your are du hyped about these BMS I ordered a second one. A 2A24S15P (2A balancer current, 150A). This is also printed on the casing and reported in the firmware. However, when I opened it the PCB had a label 1A24S15P, indicating only 1A balancing current. Seems I paid 20€ more just for a different firmware. I hope the hardware is really capable of 2A balancing current...

I believe you said that you don't turn on the "Balance Only When Charging" feature. That is probably fine in your location but I turn it on here because our temps easily go below 0c. Setting the cell CUT (charge under temp) protection to above 0c is not enough to prevent damaging the cells. This is because the CUT only controls the FET's and stops the current into the battery. However the balancing current is still allowed between cells when the other balance parameters are met.

I don't find any information on the JK app about the charged (or discharged) Ah? That would be good to know and easy to calculate for the BMS i guess. I there any setting for this to show the Ah?

The system functions quite well and flawlessly in conjunction with VICTRON 100/30 Charge controller. Cheers, guten Tag und 73s…

A big reason for the for the cell wire resistance is due to the high balance current. I have mine set to balance to within 0.008 volts (8 millivolts). When it detects a high cell more than 0.008 above, it will start pulling 2 amps from that cell. With a wire resistance of 0.147 ohms, 2 amps of current draw will cause the reading to drop 0.294 volts. 294 / 8 = 36.75 That is an induced measurement error of 36 times as much as the voltage difference we are trying to measure. And the revers happens on the low cell. When it tries to push 2 amps, the voltage will jump up that 0.294 volts. That is not the real cell voltage, it is only voltage drop through the balancer wires. When you first power up the balancer, it cycles balance current in and out of each cell to measure those values. It then calculates a correction factor when it is pulling or pushing balance current. It is actually a very smart way of being able to monitor the cells while balancing.
@OffGridGarageAustralia
@OffGridGarageAustralia 2 года назад
Thanks Luke. But the BMS will only ever measure the voltage of a single cell OR balance this cell but never does both at the same time. It may show the cell voltage during balancing but I doubt it takes this into account as a real measurement as this would make no sense.
@christianvollmer167
@christianvollmer167 2 года назад
Hey Andy, I think the wire resistance is not the sense wires as this makes really no sense. I am very sure that the BMS is sensing the resistance of the the bridge wires between the cells ! This would also make sense to have the limits for that in the settings. Also, the measured values seems to fit into the expectation. This is also a security feature to find loose or faulty battery bar connectors. Loose battery terminal can lead to burning. Update: No, it is really the line resistance of the balance leads. They use it to detect false connections
@OffGridGarageAustralia

Thanks Christian. I have to try and take one balance cable off the battery or add a resistor to se what the BMS does when it detects a higher resistance.

Accent I through you had an Aussie accent with a twist of German. Very cool accent to me. The wiring resistance is important Andy, works output how much Voltage to send each cell to keep each battery to a maximum of 2 Amps, I believe, I still maybe worry. But as a Ex calibration technician this makes sense, right. E=V/I. Without current there is no Voltage.
