The Opinel #13. The 'office friendly' knife for Cold Steel enthusiasts

As a knife professional I can tell you that the Opinel 13 exists for maximum jackassery. It also doubles as a club for tactical situations.

Probably better as a club than it is as a knife, tbh.

I found the the Opinel #8 and #6 are pretty good alternative options for food prep. When visiting a family member’s house that doesn’t have decent kitchen knives. They are incredibly inexpensive and easy to keep in the glove compartment for such occasions. Saves me the frustration of trying to use a dull steak knife to slice tomatoes.

The Opinel 13 is designed for David C. Andersen of Knife Center. He has a "Larger than Average Hand" size. We find Opinel are great knives for mods. Great vid MC.! Happy Easter from Australia.

I bought my Opinel No. 8 on a family trip to France a long time ago, so it actually has emotional value for me. I used to EDC it before I found the knife community and went through the rabbit hole I am today. Funny story: I took it out a couple of months ago, sharpened it and use it to cut a random thing, and I ended up cutting myself and needing stitches on my finger. It's scary sharp. I like it even more!

The background to this knife. Opinel originally just made a couple of these knives for shows and fairs as a demonstration object, not for sale but the knife got so popular and requested by everyone who stopped by that they ended up producing them in rather small numbers. This knife basically is a fan-service.

I’m not a fan of the Opinel either, but I’ve seen some modded ones that have re-contoured and burnt handles, acid washed or tumbled re-ground blades with like, swedges or finger choils, and I’ve seen some that have new blades or new handles. Those are pretty cool and if I wanted to take on a small project someday I might try that out.

This reminds me of probably the only good scene in Crocodile Dundee 3. His son asks "do you have your knife on you?" and he responds with "well I have my pocket knoife..." Minutes later he whips out a freakin ginormo folding bowie. So the Opinel 13 is Mick Dundee's backup backup knife for me.

I ended up buying the #4 with keychain because the #2 was so tiny, but I'll probably go back and buy a #2 just so I can say I have one. Currently I own: #4 stainless, keyring #6 stainless #8 stainless #8 stainless with sheath #8 stainless with walnut handle #10 carbon #12 stainless (the first Opinel I ever bought). Planning to buy #2 stainless, keyring #7 stainless #9 stainless #10 stainless #12 carbon #13 stainless

I own one and actually used it to cut a watermelon 😹 it did an excellent job and then it was a most unexcellent pain to fix the wood swelling. There are a few ways to waterproof an opinel, which I sadly learned afterwards, deep frying them in oil actually does the job (impregnate them with linseed oil)
@tikkidaddy
@tikkidaddy Год назад
Yeah there's wood hardeners and Boiled linseed oil. TBH I know its ...meh...but I actually prefer the polymer handled ones because the wood problems. People mod them all the time for bushcraft useage
@freman007
@freman007 3 месяца назад
I've also heard that you can tip molten candle wax onto the end, then melt it into the wood with a hairdryer.
@FinickyVoid
@FinickyVoid Год назад
The opinel has 1 piece that all your box cutters dont: no plastic. If it's ruined, you've got wood you could repurpose as a handle for a knife or hell, use it to start a fire. The rest is metal that can be recycled or repurposed. No plastic or nylon, no buying replacement blades wrapped in plastic. But yeah idk what an opinel is actually good for other than reduced waste. I personal love the feel of the handle. It's like it's made for my little grabbers personally

It is indeed for cutting food but not just fruit. It is used as a showpiece during a family dinner or a BBQ to cut roast or big pieces of meat. Opinel advises against it to chop with it, I think.

I really hope Walter Wells decides to use one of these blades in his "re-handled" opinel linerlocks some day. I believe it's purported use is as a machete, but the actual use seems to be sitting on hardware store counters/in windows to serve as advertising.

Opinels are very simple knives. They're designed to be general utility pocket knives that cut really well, and they do. They're not tactical knives. They're not intended to be tactical knives. They're a pocket knife. The Opinel #13 is a pocket knife, for people with really long pockets.

Opinel asked themselves what every other knife company should be asking. Instead of making mini, micro, and compact versions of their existing knives, they should ask, WWCSD. What Would Cold Steel Do. They should all start making XL versions of their knives.

It is , obviously, a knife focussed on gardening, pruning etc. It just isnt plastic like a Corona or Fiskars. The blade on this is easy for a homeowner to keep sharp. Just because you cant see the use case doesnt mean there isnt one. There are lots of ways to spend time outdoors...like how you go outside in your mind and imagine all of the "extreme" scenarios you can use your Benchmade to save your dream-lover's life from a raging grizzly, then use it to build a 2 bedroom shelter out if twigs.
