Andrew Graham-Dixon introduced by Partha Mitter
Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio lived the darkest and most dangerous life of any of the great painters. In the course of this desperate life, Caravaggio created the most dramatic paintings of his age, using ordinary men and women to model for his depictions of classic religious scenes.

Engaging talk about one of my favorite artists. I like the darkness, the unknowns reflecting the genius and the madness of Caravaggio

Very interesting. I was listening to this while painting, so I didn't mind there not being much to look at. If he mentioned a picture I was unfamiliar with I could pause and google it.

i wish they would show the slides of Caravaggio's work. It's like a ballgame on tv and instead of showing the players, they show the play-by-play announcer. "One picture is worth a thousand words" But they don't show the picture, they just show the guy saying a thousand words

They did show the slides on both sides of the speaker.

I wanted to give him a standing ovation when he finished. Teachers of art would benefit by being as entertaining. I've been in the situation of the A/V assistant when the speaker and slides wouldn't synch. It is much like a dance where all parties need to be on the same page. Graham-Dixon, being the dynamic speaker he is, made limoncello from his supply of lemons. I didn't need to see the paintings so much.

It would be interesting to know if Caravaggio was influenced at all by Leonardo when he was a boy in Milan. Leonardo, in his Last Supper, chose the moment in which Jesus said one of you will betray me, as the focus of the painting. Maybe Caravaggio saw and understood the "exact moment" and applied it when he painted Perseus slaying Medusa.

Really loved this talk, wondering why they didn't show the paintings that were on the slides as he was talking about them?

Well, it is nothing to do with intro but Andrew suddenly showed a side of him not very professional. Pompous and useless lecture/presentation

He lacks the charisma needed to pull off this bombastic and arrogant style of presentation. It's irritating rather than amusing, best left to Black Adder.
