#009: JM Fortier brings his passion for small-scale, ecology-first farming to this discussion about what motivates growers big and small to scale up, and what's missing from those conversations (nutrients! community! meaning and purpose!) .
Jean-Martin (JM) Fortier has made a name for himself as a proponent of a small-scale, human-powered, and ecologically-sustainable style of "market gardening" that lends itself to cooperativism, community building, and visible resiliency within local food systems. Together with his wife Maude-Heléne Desrosches, he founded Les Jardins de Grelinette (Broadfork Gardens) in Quebec. He is the author of The Market Gardener: A Successful Grower's Handbook for Small-Scale Organic Farming, the educator behind the online course The Market Gardener's Masterclass, the star of the popular Quebecois reality television show Les Fermiers (The Farmers), and the operator of Quebec's La Ferme des Quatre Temps, a diversified ecological CSA farm that promotes biodiversity and soil growth. JM serves on the Real Organic Project's Advisory Board.

The Real Organic Podcast is hosted by Dave Chapman and Linley Dixon, engineered by Brandon StCyr, and edited and produced by Jenny Prince.
The Real Organic Project is a farmer-led movement working towards certifying 1,000 farms across the United States this year. Our add-on food label distinguishes soil-grown fruits and vegetables from hydroponically-raised produce, and pasture-raised meat, milk, and eggs from products harvested from animals in horrific confinement (CAFOs - confined animal feeding operations).

We believe that the organic standards, with their focus on soil health, biodiversity, and animal welfare were written as they should be, but that the current lack of enforcement of those standards is jeopardizing the ability for small farms who adhere to the law to stay in business. The lack of enforcement is also jeopardizing the overall health of the customers who support the organic movement; customers who are not getting what they pay for at market but still paying a premium price. And the lack of enforcement is jeopardizing the very cycles (water, air, nutrients) that Earth relies upon to provide us all with a place to live, by pushing extractive, chemical agriculture to the forefront.
If you like what you hear and are feeling inspired, we would love for you to join our movement by becoming one of our 1,000 Real Fans!

This was a special discussion - so enlightening and thoughtful provoking. It is information that must be shared and understood. People have no idea how we are being taken advantage of. Keep up the great work ❤

Between JM's book and Eliot Coleman's book there's such a wealth of knowledge available. They're great to re-read and reference continually.

Farmer's markets all the way. Eliot Coleman does it that way for a very good reason. Living within our incomes is an important concept. We don't always have to expand to be happy.

I learn so much from my animals...when a chicken refuses chemically grown feed, when a cow stops being skittish after eating kelp, when my dog spits out commercially grown streak...I believe in organics.

I've lived in a condominium for a long time and have never grown any food, but I am starting to make an attempt. A few containers with some veggies and maybe some herbs. It's a start. I believe in real food. We have the tools to make it much more available. Nestle, Pepsico and ConAgra aren't leading the way.

great interview that places growing healthy food for people in the larger picture of western culture run amok by the mythos of progress, infinite growth, and corporatizing social functions. JM shows a side of himself I have not seen in his other vids, that of the spiritually inclined ecologist.

I''m a vegan and have been for over 12+ years. I was a massive meat eater and a Sous Chef for my first career. After years about suffering from type II diabetes, high blood pressure, Etc. Taking 5 daily meds a day just to survive. I had been searching for answers. Being a diagnostic System engineer, I learned a lot about nutrition and one day I watched suggested video named, " Best Speech You Will Ever Hear - Gary Yourofsky" and instantly I had my answers. I went Vegan that minute and never ate meat, cheese, Eggs, or milk ever again. I went on to learn about Aquaponics and built a 4 seasons dome to grow my own food. within 14 months I no longer required daily medications for life! When Covid came along I saw through it and knew who would get it and why. It was the SAD diet as covid took advantage of Acidic conditions using ACE2 to infect lungs. Wearing masks made humans targets. I saw through it all. Learning about Veganism taught me so much about nutrition. JM's food is perfect! Market Gardens rule!

Big Ag sees the soil as growing medium, not a living thing. Sad truth.

Really? You have to bring BLM into this discussion. Absolutely not helpful. Stick to the topic. BLM is not a good analogy. Politics affects everything today, but specific organizations like BLM was a poor choice.
