JMT in 7 Days

211 miles, 50,000 ft elevation gain, 7 days. In 2021, my brother and I set out to do the Sierra Nevada's John Muir Trail as fast as we possibly could, which we figured would be about a week. By no means the record, but for us it was enough to thoroughly trash our bodies and test our limits.

This was well made. Thank you for taking the time to document it well and for putting the effort into editing. I'm surprised this has less than 10k views.

Guys this was EXCELLENT!!! Someone posted this to the PCT subreddit and as I’m starting the Sierra tomorrow evening, I checked it out to hype myself up. As a current hiker and former editor, I just love everything about this film. Impeccable work all around, both on the film side and the crushing miles side. Side note; I hiked the JMT once before in 2021 and also had the misfortune of being just a few miles away from someone who got hit my lightning and passed. I think about this a lot. Just how it could have been me instead. I know you didn’t stay in that topic for very long but I can’t imagine that was easy to grapple with. It certainly wasn’t for me. Anyway, hats off to you both. 10/10.

My friend and I were doing a ten-day JMT hike and we crossed paths with you at Reds Meadow. We admired your style and talked with your dad on the bus back up to Mammoth. Great effort and thanks for sharing your experience in this video. We're going to attempt a 7-8 day this year and just got our permits!

A perspective..... In 1972 I was 18 years old. I decided it would be cool to hike the John Muir Trail in 7 days, as I had never heard of anybody doing that. Also did this by myself as I did not know anybody else crazy enough to try . Put a week worth of food in my Kelty pack, and hitchhiked from Los Angeles to the Mt Whitney trailhead. The pack weighed about 45 pounds, which was mostly food. No real flashlights in those days, so night hiking was unheard of. So hiked from 6 in the morning to 6 at night each day. Figured 3 mph downhill , and 2 mph hill. Did no training whatsoever. The trail officially starts at the top of Mt Whitney. So went to the top, spent the night in the cabin there, and left at 6 am the next morning. Had no long pants, was lightly snowing at the top when I left. I planned camping spots every 30 miles. I was effortlessly making the hike for 5 days. As you well know, the southern section is the hard part with the endless passes and valleys .The night of the 5th day, it started raining hard. I had no tent to save weight , and would sleep at night on a plastic ground cloth. A fellow camper felt sorry for me, and said I could stay in his tent . His tent leaked badly, and by morning my sleeping bag was soaked, and I was going into hyperthermia. I could barely walk I was so cold....... So sadly had to leave the trail at Devil's Postpile. Which really pissed me off, as the last two days of the trail down to Yosemite are a piece of cake. It is astonishing to see the level of preparation that you guys have done, a far cry from me....

Hiking the JMT with no training is impressive. Good to be young.

Loved the filmmaking and vibes! Also since yall were counting the minutes, the JMT technically starts at Mt Whitney Summit so you actually had an extra half day 😅

Great video, just make sure you read up about lightening safety. Laying on the ground and ground currents are the main cause of death. You need to keep your feet together in a hunched position if you can’t move to a safer place. When you’re laying down, more electric current can move through your body bc it is more spread out. Be safe out there. Maybe you can add lightening safety to your show notes to help future hikers?

The scene with the cave as shelter had my nerves up! Since caves and rocks are quite dangerous in lightning, but I can't fault them for going there. Not much one can do that high up other than, as you mentioned, let any potential current travel from ground - feet - heels - feet - ground instead of up through your organs to find ground again.

No need to add "mountains" to the Sierra Nevada which is Spanish for "snowy range". The California Miwok named it "Kayopha the sky and the peaks that touch it" .John Muir called it THE RANGE OF LIGHT which it is !!! With an open Heart, you may discover that!!!
