Jo Brand on her two careers, 'taking the piss' out of Prince Harry, and her favourite comedian ever

Legendary comedian Jo Brand gives one of her widest-ranging interviews ever in our first Chat Life interview! Jo defends her joke about Prince Harry taking drugs, and says it's only fair that the Royal Family "have the piss taken out of them" every now and then.
She picks her favourite comedian of all time, considers the extent to which her routines are based on reality, and tells us why she doesn't watch young up and coming comedy talent. Our interviewer, Oscar, also attempts to do an impression of her (shown after the credits) - "attempts" being the crucial word, here...
Jo gives her verdict on the current state of the NHS, and whether she values her time as a psychiatric nurse more than her current role as a celebrity comedian.
Of course, we chat a little about politics too -- you can see our sister project Chat Politics here: / chatpolitics . Jo outlines her conditional support for the Labour Party, and ponders whether Ed Miliband is Prime Minister material.
'Chat Life' is a new RU-vid channel, in which we'll be interviewing those working in film, the media and comedy. Subscribe to us to be notified of future uploads, and take a look at our website: www.chatlife.tv

Brilliant interview. I think the interviewer's slight nervousness prompted more honest engagement from Jo. She is such a warm, intelligent person. Hilarious too. I'd listen to her views on anything!

I love your questions!!! So intelligent and thoughtful. And you're really respecting your interviewee with that style, too. You're acknowledging her career as a nurse, and acknowledging her intelligence. Thanks so much for making such high quality content. Wonderful comedian and nurse, and wonderful interviewer!

Good interviewer for such a young chap. Because the lad chooses to utilise eloquence and correct enunciation of his native tongue, I've noticed some disparaging comments from people who are calling him a snooty so and so etc. It is a crying shame that the younger generation today are not applauding his correct usage of the language and not demonizing the morons that use the 'Mah Blud' patter.

It has been quite some time since I asked for a definition of a troll. My ill-educated feminist opponent would not answer. I suppose I must have a go myself: A feminist (Nazi/Stalinist/shithead) defines a troll as someone who writes the truth about the torture and abandonment of children to criminal scum, by badly-educated, pseudo-religious, scumabg feminists/lefties. Where are you Angela? I miss your occasional competitiveness, credulity, pseudo-religious quackery and love of comic mediocrity. Do come back soon.

Ahh. Your just a bigoted, slime ball all on your own. Fair enough. To be fair, a child's probably good enough to take you on, they would certainly display more finesse in insulting their "opponent". You are nothing but a hateful little man, frantically bashing out insults from the safety of his basement. Your hilarious little man, but good effort to try and look intelligent, incase you haven't noticed, its a massive FAIL. Just like your beloved newspaper.

+mudpuddlestruck bylightning Alright, I enjoy a good discussion, and this is an interesting and important subject. Care to engage? I'm ready if you are :D For starters, what exactly do you dislike about feminists? Is it their platform, or they themselves? I'd like to begin by straightening this out, as despite tending to call myself a feminist, I have seen some very unintelligent, rude, and frankly sexist comments around the internet that have been posted by so-called feminists. These comments do not represent what I believe feminism stands for - equality (of opportunity) of the sexes.
@damianbylightning6823
@damianbylightning6823 9 лет назад
+theparkourhobo If you believe in equality of opportunity and equality before law which is bounded by rules (which must also be just, in that they limit and balance power), then I have no argument about that. Why call yourself a feminist if your platform is the traditional (supposedly patriarchal) view that power must be goverened, balanced and bound by a set of rules? Feminists, today, seem to spend all their time opposing such a magnificent and just achievement. They want to tear it down and have not yet told us what it is they want to replace it with. Pointing this out is, apparently, mysogynist, fascist, hate-filled and macho. TBH - it isn't really feminism that I deeply and sincerely hate; it is activist politics. Such loathesome activity seeks to destroy the gains of constitutional government ( government bound by law) and replace it with something else. Activists are too filled with pseudo-religious zeal to actually think about what it is they want to replace constitutional government with. By they, I mean feminists, disability activists, animal rights extremists, race wariiors, transgender activists and so on. Islamic extremists are different, they at least are honest. Statistics' misuse, the hypocritical use of sex and feminity to gain political advantage, the conscious use of Darwinian explanations to gain political advantage, the misuse of power towards males, the refusal of gender studies to study gender, the mixing of ideas which are incommensurable, the sophistry, the refusal of polite society to challenge this madness and so on. All these things present a danger to civilised values and constitutional government. Politicians and intellectuals who have spoken about this are marginalised. I am now forced to become something of an activist myself, the thing I hate most. I support other activists. This is a very unhealhy state of affairs. Modern life gives people great power if their ideas chime with certain evolutionary perspectives in human consciousness - in the past this has caused massive suffering where politics is not bound by rules/laws. We are getting closer to the day when we are staring into the abyss. The dominant ideas of our time are not essentially new, they are recombinations of mostly bad, unjust and deeply stupid and selfish ideas. Their combinations may be new. The results are all too predictable.
