Catterline is a small coastal village, on the Aberdeenshire coast of the North Sea. During a 1951 exhibition of her work at Aberdeen’s Gaumont Cinema, artist Joan Eardley (1921-1963) contracted the mumps. While she was recovering, a close friend took her on a drive to Catterline, where they discovered a remote two-room building on a cliff top was for sale. This was the Watchie, a simple space that became Eardley’s studio in 1952.
For the rest of her life, Eardley returned to Catterline often, buying a cottage of her own in 1955. She became very attached to the local community, and to the countryside around the village, saying: ‘I do feel the more you know something the more you can get out of it - the more it gives you’.
In this film, local Catterline resident Ron Stephen, and former Curator Fiona Pearson discuss Eardley’s relationship with the village.

Her paintings fizz with energy, she was so good she was even able to paint the atoms of the matter. Was in Bradford recently to see Hockney's landscapes which the Saltaire holds on the edge of town. His Bridlington iPad landscape prints too are genius, mastering the tech in his mid 70's.

Wonderful exhibition and a marvellous conclusion being able to see and hear the woman. Very moving that it takes place under her own painting of a flower bouquet painted in the weeks before her death. Very poignant.

Wonderfully perceptive overview of Joan Eardley's work at Catterline. Very evocative piece where you can hear her speak and see the context. very good commentary from those who knew her. Lovely!

My dad had a Stall at the Barras Market in 1950s Joan would come in her wee Lambretta scooter she would buy old victoriana canvases and I believe she over painted them the picture I have is Stunning it's an old Glasgow Tennant with small Bell shaped kids in the street Graffiti in the walls of the old building this I would say judging by the 1950s label on the back would be a painting even before she started to Paint the Sampson kids there's a painting in the Mc Clennan Art Gallary of me and one of the Sampson kids outside the Casino Picture hall in Castle Street Glasgow must have been early 1950s JD.
