The 5th video in the ILFORD Photo #MyFilmStory series comes from New Jersey based Filipina-American photographer and filmmaker Joan Michel.
Joan captures narratives inspired by personal experiences that revolve around mental health, death, and trauma that people have experienced.
She aspires to share her knowledge with others, create full-length features and be noticed as a female, non-white director in the industry. She’s dedicated to creating art that is authentic no matter what the subject is.
In this video Joan shoots with a Mamiya RZ67 medium format film camera and a variety of ILFORD black and white film including: ILFORD HP5 plus 35mm, ILFORD FP4 plus 120 film, and ILFORD XP2 Super.

We have been talking to Joan Michel for a while and it had been amazing to see how her her work has developed during that time. She is very open in this #MyFilmStory video about how analogue film photography helps her cope with social anxiety and it is a sentiment that we have heard echoed by others. We really enjoyed this peak into her world and hope that you do too.

Thanks for watching. I love how this series give us an insight into how other film photographers work. Do you shoot a lot of black and white film yourself?

@@Ilfordphoto Oh, I have been getting into Black and White - mostly Polaroid and Ilford! I’ve shot a decent amount of rolls, I’m just wondering whether I should develop at a Lab or give it a try myself - the initial development costs are a bit of a turn off (though I want to try stuff like Caffenol)

@@AeromaticXD I'd definitely recommend giving it a try yourself. Start off simply (we have a ILFORD x Paterson kit that has everything you need to get started) and then once you're comfortable try some more experimental film developing techniques. The film community is fantastic with so many people happy to help and offer advice.
