Joan used to live around the corner from me when I lived in Brooklyn. She was a frequent customer in my business. Very cool chick. I wish her well wherever she is.
Probably nobody's going to read this but I have to say it... Three day before my dad passed away, we were on the car, he was taking me to church when this song came along on the radio. He started singing it. He smiled at me and told me everything was going to be okay. I miss him so much. Only God knows when it's our time to leave. 01/10/21 8:15 p.m.
Lyrics: If God had a name what would it be? And would you call it to his face? If you were faced with Him in all His glory What would you ask if you had just one question? And yeah, yeah, God is great Yeah, yeah, God is good Yeah, yeah, yeah-yeah-yeah What if God was one of us? Just a slob like one of us Just a stranger on the bus Tryin' to make his way home? If God had a face what would it look like? And would you want to see If seeing meant that you would have to believe In things like heaven and in Jesus and the Saints And all the prophets? And yeah, yeah, God is great Yeah, yeah, God is good Yeah, yeah, yeah-yeah-yeah What if God was one of us? Just a slob like one of us Just a stranger on the bus Tryin' to make his way home? Just tryin' to make his way home Back up to heaven all alone Nobody callin' on the phone 'Cept for the Pope, maybe in Rome And yeah, yeah, God is great Yeah, yeah, God is good Yeah, yeah, yeah-yeah-yeah What if God was one of us? Just a slob like one of us Just a stranger on the bus Tryin' to make his way home? Just tryin' to make his way home Like a holy rolling stone? Back up to heaven all alone Just tryin' to make his way home Nobody callin' on the phone 'Cept for the Pope maybe in Rome
We are the same age, I remember that I was 15 and I saw this video on MTV Italia (I'm from Rome🏛️)..What wonderful memories, my adolescence although it was a bit troubled and a period that I remember with extreme tenderness...🫂
Same here (though a couple of years older). Still have the cassette even though I only have an old Walkman to play it on! Just can't bring myself to throw it away.
Hearing this song for the first time, on the radio, was like a religious experience for me. I had just landed in Medford, Oregon, and was driving my rental car from the airport towards my hotel. I channel-surfed the radio for a few minutes until I found a likable radio station... within a few minutes, this song came on. I was choked up, tears in my eyes.... this song resonated in my spirit like an epiphany.... I forgot about going to the hotel and drove instead to the nearest record store I could find, and bought Joan's album on cassette. I still listen to the song regularly, 30 years later, and it still gives me goosebumps.
Im listening just now :-) It came to my mind yesterday... I was playing with the words a little to be honest, since it says "would you want to see, if seeing meant that you would have to believe"... Well If you saw, you would know. So knowing means you can not believe anymore, because you know. Some time back I heard in a video, imagine that this truly happens, that you meet God and can ask just one question. The author said pause if you need, and really really think what would you ask, take your time... The more I thought about it, about the question, I came to a conclusion that there really is no one question to ask. And the author made the same point :-)
One Of Us (So one of these nights and about twelve o'clock) (This old world's going to reel and rock) (Saints will tremble and cry for pain) (For the Lord's gonna come in His heavenly airplane) Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah If God had a name What would it be? And would you call it to His face If you were faced with Him in all His glory? What would you ask if you had just one question? Yeah, yeah, God is great Yeah, yeah, God is good Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah What if God was one of us? Just a slob like one of us Just a stranger on the bus Trying to make his way home If God had a face What would it look like? And would you want to see If seeing meant that you would have to believe In things like heaven and in Jesus and the saints And all the prophets? And yeah, yeah, God is great Yeah, yeah, God is good Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah What if God was one of us? Just a slob like one of us Just a stranger on the bus Trying to make his way home Just trying to make his way home Back up to heaven all alone Nobody calling on the phone 'Cept for the Pope, maybe, in Rome Oh, oh, oh, oh Yeah, yeah, God is great Yeah, yeah, God is good Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah What if God was one of us? Just a slob like one of us Just a stranger on the bus Trying to make his way home Just trying to make his way home Like a holy rolling stone Back up to heaven all alone Just trying to make his way home Nobody calling on the phone 'Cept for the Pope, maybe, in Rome
I used to listened this before going to school while my Papa braided my hair. I was at 4 or 5 grade of elementary school that time. Now, it's been 2 months my Papa had gone since he lost the battle through Covid on Friday, July 9th, 2021. This song brings so much memories of my childhood and it becomes one of souvenirs that I can treasure to linger my bond with my Papa. Thank you so much Joan for making this MASTERPIECE. Love, xoxo Friday, September 10th, 2021 03:12 AM

I don't know if anybody is gonna read this but this was my nanas favorite song and she listens to it a day before she died and while listening to it she told me she would see me in heaven. Miss you nana ❤️
What a dinosaur! There’s tons of good new music. I love the 90s but I haven’t looked back. I haven’t listen to 90% of the music. I was so passionate about back then. Why isolate yourself in the past
@@WilliamJones-hc7ff And in many ways I also agree with this. I was there soaking it all in when Dylan was giving a new expression of thought, in new ways. Then the scene exploded and it was all so forbidden which made the young,"me" love it. And it was everywhere. The radio didn't have enough minutes in the day to play all the great new art that was flowing forth. I think every generation believes the music of their youth was the best. But for those of us who experienced the music of roughly from Dylan in the 60s til the Seattle sounds of the 90s and all that great music in between I think at least musically, we were truly blessed.

Listening to this song now at 46 takes me back over 25 years ago to my college days. Haven't heard it in years and it most definitely hits different as a grown woman who has experienced more trauma in my life than I could have imagined in my worst nightmares. This song helped me along the way. I'm stronger now, and grateful more than I ever was before.

faltou essa prte: [oh... one of these nights at about twelve o'clock this whole earth's gonna reel and rock... things thay'll tremble and cry for pain for the Lord's gonna come in his heavenly airplane.]
This song brings back great memories from the 90’s, cruising around Newburgh and Evansville IN with my BFF, Jenny, in her Mazda RX7 blaring the song and singing at the top of our lungs. Rest in Heaven. Jenny Rae Mitchell. 1975-2022❤
I remember when this song came out in 95', it was all over the radio and on MTV, performed on the award shows and everything. Now fast forward to 2024 if a song like this came out no one would be playing it at all on mainstream radio. It would be considered gospel music.
I believe that God loves all of us. Not only those who pray every day, not only those with perfect lifes, not only those who believe to be perfect...every one person....sick, lonely, poor, hurt, with problems...everyone. So nobody is allowed to treat them wrong. Drama...is small and jalous ...nothing.;) If you build your business and sell. Adv based on somebody's problems...than you are nothing.
I'd be honored if some 90s fans would take a listen to my acoustic piano & vocal RU-vid performances of IF GOD WAS ONE OF US by Joan Osborne and BITTERSWEET SYMPHONY by the Verve in tribute to 2 standards of the mid/late 90s era. Live acoustic with no autotune or digital editing. Peace out and stay safe in the '020s.
My friend and I, the first time we saw and heard this song .. we absolutely went on some kind of ride that I had never experienced and not since either. We we inside that video. Some would call it psychosis but it was just a trip to awarness.
I remember years ago riding the transit bus to work one morning when the driver played this song over the bus speaker system. Nobody said a word when the bus came to a stop. It was magical to say the least.
the meaning of this track is very profound about the meaning of life, ethics, belief, and if you would still be good if no afterlife or divine reward was offered or guaranteed in return. .
This was played at the end of my beautiful sister's funeral last Fri.... She lost her brave fight with breast cancer.... May everyone of us listening to this... Live life.. Love everything.. Laugh hard. .. and have no regrets.. ❤️🙏😇 Xxx
My deepest sympathy for your loss and this was a great song to sing at the funeral. I was not a great fan of nineties music with the exception of this, Oasis and the Corrs which stand out in my opinion.😁🎸🎼🏴🏴
Rosie Kane: Your Sister was a Victor, I do not consider She lost the Battle, She passed away, but She is in Heaven now, Victorious waiting to see You again.
Growing up in the 90s I heard this song multiple times and it was just another song. almost 25+ years later. I just listen to it five minutes ago because the melody played in my head so I wanted to play it and I can just about agree with every single comment here. Listening to it now grown up and wiser, this song pulled out my heartstrings and made me tear up and still tearing up as I write this comment. Such an amazing beautiful song and I can appreciate now that I’m older.
I was in 7th grade when this was when this was popular and I distinctly remember many peers, even at that age, discussing and elaborating on the religious questions posed by the song. How exactly could you miss the piecing lyrics of the chorus and think it was just another song?????
Czas płynie...a my z nim.Tyle dobrych wspomnień,tyle dobrych ludzi juz nie ma.A piosenka brzmi.....Dla mnie to swego rodzaju piosenka opisujaca życie.....Piękna
2023 and just heard this song on an IG reel and came here to listen to it all. Hadn't heard it in ages and felt like listening to it. Kind of need a bit of hope right now and the words "God is good" called to me. 🙏 I'm praying for healing 🙏💖.
The Pope is not calling Jesus Christ, as the Pope believes that He is the Vicar (Conduit) of Christ. Why would someone call themselves? I wonder who the Pope is calling? Jesus Christ is our High Priest, we don't need a phone.
@@TraveleronMywayHome oh contrair monfrere ... everybody needs a phone . The point is being connected to something . Jesus is the internet before the concept of everybody being connected with their thoughts as we are today. Hence ,,, did they really think the idea of perfect heaven through ?
This was one of the songs we listened to in English class when I was in maybe 6th or 7th grade and it'll never not make me think of my absolutely amazing English teacher I had back then. Thanks for being such a cool teacher, Frau Kielmann ❤️

The song was very popular in the 90s. Considering the gazillions of great songs out there nobody has ever heard of I think "One of Us" has gotten more than a fair share of attention.
So grateful to have grown up as a teen in the 90's. Turned 10 in 1990, 19 in 1999. Such a great time in life; sad my kids won't have anything comparable thru this next decade

"What a wonderful song about God !!" Beautifully done, beautifully sung Joan Osborne. Thank you. "May God keep you safe. Your family. Your friends. May God keep you all safe. Amen." God could be on the bus with you.
God and religion are two different things. one is created by man for control and the other is the creator of man for love free will is everything God gave us that for a reason use it wisely God bless much love
I love this song, one of the best singles of the 90´s in my opinion. This decade had a lot of great music and also the best MTV time. This theme is like a chocolate, i will never stop eating it...
I don't think the nineties were as good as the80's but this was an exception I unfortunately had to give up chocolate to lose weight!!🎼🎸😁🏴🏴🤭
@albertd9216 lol tell that to the kids who were raped and abused by his followers while he sat back and watched. Your god is negligent at best and evil at worst
I listen to this in 2024. Joan Osborne is truly inspired by God to produce this. The power of this music video flows right through my heart. I feel a divine connection. Thank you Joan ! By the way, if God had a name she would be called Joan.
I wonder, then, why the orient part of the roman empire once christian decide to convert to islam just not to be second class citizen.Weak faith? or more faith to more money?
@@MrNewman7336 Egypt was majority muslin only around the year 1000. And they wanted nothing to do with helping the crusaders bc europeens saw then as heretics and during bysantium rules did the same as Rome to the early christians. That facilitated the conquest bc their tolerance\indifference to difference of faith of christianity( and not just in Egypt) help their acceptance by larger populations of non muslin. The worms were already inthe apples! And no i am not a muslin just a fan of history( and a agnostic by self-education.
A Masterpiece of the 90s, my childhood anthem, and one of my moms favorite songs which came out right before she was murdered. This song will always mean so much to me and everytime I listen to it I feel it’s a special moment I’m sharing with my mom. What a blessing.
I remember when I was a kid and that song used to run on the radio. I've had no idea what the lyrics was about but i'm happy i came back into it some years later. Thank you very much for being a part of my childhood. Greetings from France :)
@@nhandapereira4821right on the point, it’s about our personal relationship with Him, religion was and still be used only to control people and start wars, God is not about that, they just used God for that, all you need is a good translated Bible to understand things by your own experience!
when a song hits you in the chest, cleanly; dropping you to the floor, then you know you have a soul and you can still love. Thank you Joan Osborne for the refreshment to my soul.
Jesus loves you. I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star. Revelation 22:16 ✝🌅 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 ✝🌅 To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins. Acts 10:43 ✝🌅
