I can relate to all of these issues. Although I took up Jodan gradually from sandan. I started with feet first. I figured once I got the hang of the feet in solo training I'd ramp things up from yondan. It's now been two and a half years since I got yondan and it's beginning to come together. Fair play mate. Nice video. Glad you conquered your injury.

As a martial arts practitioner I have been training from childhood to adulthood, i started with Taekwondo during my kindergarten years, i really fell in love with martial arts, then during elementary I joined Karate, I won first place in a competition once, i was rising the ranks in my elementary school as fast as Bruce lee kicking his opponents face, then when i go to middle school i continued my Karate journey and I also took taekwondo aswell at middle school, the only thing I did was martial arts at that point, i then finally achieved my black belt, i started training 3 martial arts during high school which is probably a signal that someone is addicted, i trained Karate, Taekwondo and Kendo, then i also learned Iaido, won some local competitions that nobody probably have heard of, then i got to college in Japan specifically Okinawa so I can deepen my understanding of martial arts, i fell to depression that time and loss my lifelong passion of martial arts, after graduating i was lost in what to do, then i decided to try martial arts again, i rediscovered my passion for martial arts, i cured my depressing state with martial arts, i won more local meh competitions but i was proud of my journey, now I currently am married, have children and is training in Karate, Taekwondo in Jiu jitsu, still a white belt in BJJ though, I have been Training martial arts for over a decade now and i don't regret it, although I'm not some famous influencer or some grandmaster, my passion will never end whether other people like it or not Anyways I have one piece of advice for you to improve your Kendo, focus on your Kendo, never leave it because i can guarantee once you never leave your passion you will be happy, you will not regret it, best wishes to you, your teachers and your family and good luck on your journey of martial arts (Currently using my account that my son for some reason uses to post stuff so don't mind me)

Thank you for your kind words! I am far from feeling I have any authority in the matter of kendo and jodan to advise people. Please, always follow guidance of your Sensei and senpai. But as a fellow practitioner I just would like to throw few random words that help me: patience, perseverance, discipline, small improvements each session, one goal only for each session, and most important - practice in work out gloves lol. We can only practice as much as the skin in the palm allows, take care of it and don’t feel shame about it. Most people that would say that you should train bare handed probably don’t do 1000 swings day to day. cheers!

Dude you were already at least at sandan level. the standards you put for your strikes is very high and i am amazed about how much you dedicated yourself in order to perfect these strikes. You will breeze through 4th and probably 5th dan as well, although i certainly know that these exams dont judge by technical ability at that point but on when you strike. however i feel you are ahead of yourself ... not the other way around. you can be proud

In my country, Jordan players are often taught to straighten their stance just before striking, like shots from Chudan. I’m not a Jordan player, but easily able to strike sharply when I did as they are told. On the other hand, when striking from neutral stance of Jordan which is slightly “open” (I couldn’t find an appropriate word…) the shots are always terrible.

Jodan Stance is Very different from Chudan Stance. Chudan Stance is studied alot more, but the Jodan isnt. So i recommend trying to incorporate the basic fundamentals of Chudan that you wouldn’t normally see in Jodan. For example: Using Hikiwaza or Counter attacks “I forgot what it is in japanese” I want you to be more Creative and do things that arent seen before in kendo, You have an opportunity because Jodan isnt studied that much. i want to see you also using Nitoryu because your single hand attacks are impressive with reach and speed. accuracy is something you can get better with practice though :)
@szczepanikpianist

I like that there are perfectionists out there in the world like me in kendo. As a 20 year practitioner of kendo don’t use the floor to rebound the shinai after a missed jodan katate waza. Use the uchikomi dai to work on uchima and grip strength for katate waza.
