Slavery is deeply psychological. Many of the young white children of slave owners were practically raised by the slaves. Slave women were wet nurses, nanny’s and caretakers. We all know how deep childhood friendships can go. We can have special places in our hearts for our childhood friends or good childhood caretakers. Then suddenly as teen years approach, in the world of the plantation this would have changed suddenly and radically. Those same kids would have been forced into sudden role reversals often with violence. Suddenly the woman who nursed you, you are having to beat. Suddenly the childhood crush, you have the option to beat and or rape, but never love and honor. That is deeply twisted and then just adding the angst of a male/female love relationship and you have a recipe for disaster. The devil knows how to destroy humanity. That’s for sure.
