Colin Botts and Alan Colfer performing a set of barndances Joe Bane's and Gypsy Princess (I learned these tunes from concertina player Cormac Begley, who recorded this set with Jack Talty on their album Na Fir Bolg).
This must be the 20 or 30th time I have played this video! What an incredible performance! So laid back, so beautiful! Watch him smile at the incredible riff he pulled off (starting at about 2:27 or so). He was definitely, in the groove!!
this performance has inspired me to learn the melody of these two on my guitar and every other instrument I play. It's one of the better sounding versions of this on YT imo (next to Will Allen's melodeon version)
Thanks so much! Glad you liked it! By the way, if you haven't heard it already you should check out Cormac Begley and Jack Talty's version: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XIVMg8-OI2A.htmlsi=EcPpQBko1fgi9rPZ
Absolutely unbeatable.Unbearably gorgeous music.Makes you glad you are still alive to hear and enjoy it.I always feel 20 years younger after a good dose of an oul' shindig like this
Haha! 😂 Yeah, sorry about that. It was partly due to the hiking boots and exuberant foot tapping , but was mostly because of the mic sitting on the floor right in front of us.
You're very welcome. I love to hear that you will be passing these tunes on to others. That's what keeps the tradition alive! All the best to you and your session! Cheers!
Fantastic set. Great sounding Weber instrument too. Mighty playing. I think our Irish trad band Sigean up in East Tennessee might cop this set. Lol. It’s that great. We’ve been looking for a tune to go with Gypsy Princess.
Thanks Tom. No, I don't use a thumb pick. And yes, I did the M.A. program at Limerick. The new building is lovely. It's a huge improvement over the Foundation Building. You'll have to make a trip back to BLAS! :)
I mostly use GDAE, though both tunings certainly have their place. If I had a three course Greek bouzouki like Alec Finn I would definitely tune it DAD. Maybe one day!
I never tire of these beautiful videos. We don't hear this combination of instruments often enough in Irish music. Have the two of you ever recorded an album of this music?
Hey Collin. Love these Vids! I don't want to bother you, but are you able to write down the mandolin/tenor Banjo TABS of Gypsy Princess (The version you are playing) for me? I'm playing Joe Bane's too and i want to play the second tune like in your medley. Sory for my broken english ... greetings from Germany :D
Thanks +Srokathes. I probably won't have an opportunity to do so in the immediate future, but I'll try to find the time sometime in the next several weeks. Cheers!
Great stuff, Colin-- we play Gypsy princess in sessions her, but I never heard Joe Bane's. I'm going to borrow that one. Also, it looks like you're playing with a thumb pick, maybe it's just the camera angle. Did you study at Limerick. Jeez, the new concert hall looks gorgeous. When I was at Blas 10 years ago, we did everything in the Foundation building. I look forward to new clips from you. Keep playing.
Trad. musicians always do this......I know, I have played with lots of them. Slippers would be more appropriate. You should be able to keep time without making that noise. 🤣🤣🤣
