Lush, brooding and somewhat perverse, this highly atmospheric 17th century British horror film made few ripples on original release, but has come to be regarded as nearly the equal of the better-known Witchfinder General, another example of‚ devilish superstition leading to tragedy. Disjointed at times, but high on the list of superior‚ fright films of the 70s.
But wait! There's more! TFH has a podcast!

A title like "Blood on Satan's Claw" has me thinking "Why am I not watching this right f**king now?!?"

One of the most beautifully filmed horrors. Absolutely stunning and Linda Hayden is so brilliant in this film.

I'm a Brit and I love this film so much.I remember watching it as a kid on a lil black and white T.V and it terrified me,it's so well done,The Wicker Man is my fave film Horror or otherwise but this comes pretty close behind as does Vampyres (1974) and Deathline /Raw Meat ,I could write a long chapter on just how great BOSC is but you all know this.

The movie was made on a tiny budget but it looks like a million dollar production (in 1970s terms) It made very little impact in England or America and to this day it has barley broken even. This was the only film made by the directer who went back to making TV commercials. Christopher Lee was asked to star in the movie but his fee was too high, so Patrick Wymark got the part of the avenging Justice. But tragedy was to follow as Wymark who was in his mid-40s, died suddenly a few weeks after the shooting finished. This was his best work and he had become a great character actor. This great movie is long overdue for reappraisal and deserves to be much better known.

I had heard of this film but never saw it till about a year ago. It's a real classic! So well done on every level: directing, acting, score and cinematography. Well worth watching.

This film was incredibly well done -- directing; acting performances; even the musical score adds to the underlying sense of evil -- Linda Hayden got my attention in one of the Hammer Studios "Dracula" films (with Christopher Lee) before I saw her in "Blood On Satan's Claw"

One of the best and scariest British horror films not just of the nineteen seventies but also of all time.

The eerie score by Marc Wilkinson was finally released on CD in 2007 and is now sold out but can still be found on ebay and other sites at sometimes outrageous prices. The score can be found on Amazon as a digital download for $8.99! Its an amazing atmospheric score!

I downloaded it off iTunes, so I'd be surprised if it wasn't still available there.

I saw a bad print of this on a late night horror show as a kid and was surprised. Because, even dark and choppy, it had atmosphere and it was GOOD.

Wow! unforgettable thank God for movie madness in Portland Oregon I found the movie about 6 years ago finally saw Lynda Hayden's famous nude seen that aside the cinematography is they nail it the whole country side they put you there movie magic simply at it's best cinema magnificent as Ingrid Pitt of Hammer films would say

Arf,ok gotta rewatch it but i got hard time with the bleak image of the 70's brit horror movies(The asphyx..), Linda Hayden is disturbinly attractive and so precocious.

I met a dude here on youtube who lives pretty close to most of the filming locations. He has posted a few clips for me of the church ruins and the farmhouse. Best horror flick of the 70's, as far as I'm concerned. Here's a link to one of the clips: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hPvw0GWstxs.html

I agree that the movie betrays its episodic roots. Does anyone see similarities in theme between this Piers Haggard's Quatermass from the late '70s?

VonWenk I suppose there are certain stylistic touches, but to be fair he was never going to better this, probably the best example of "folk horror" next to Witchfinder General and The Wicker Man.
@VonWenk

Marc Wilkerson doing music could count as a stylistic similarity, but mainly I was thinking of the young being influenced by an outside malevolent force and roaming in packs.
