Joe Dante on THE 5,000 FINGERS OF DR. T.

Columbia Pictures chief Harry Cohn never forgave producer Stanley Kramer for this early Dr. Seuss fantasy that was supposed to be another The Wizard of Oz but turned out more like Willie Wonka as directed by Liberace. One of the stranger major studio "family" films, with subtexts you just don't wanna know about. Seuss once claimed that Kramer actually directed most of the picture after director Roy Rowland fell ill. Kramer partner Carl Foreman had been slated to direct before he was blacklisted.

One morning, in 1959, I woke up before my parents, went downstairs and switched on the TV to watch the children's channel. There before me, in glorious black and white, were the opening credits to this movie. I sat spellbound through the whole mad adventure and never forgot it. Hans Conried became my favorite movie villain of all time, and his "Dress Me" song never faded from my memory. Some thirty years later a friend sent me a VHS tape of the movie, and I saw it for the first time in color. I was blown away all over again. I used to show it to students in Language Lab class, and was delighted when some girls left the class singing Tommy Rettig's "Little Kids" song.

If nothing else, the production designer on this film should have won an Oscar. There is just something vaguely disquieting about seeing Seussian architecture in three dimensions. Maybe they should have got Frank Tashlin to direct it. And who better to play Dr. T than Snidely Whiplash himself, Hans Conried.

Years ago I published a magazine. It's primary purpose was "making of..." retrospective articles. This was to be one of our key retrospects. We'd interviewed Stanley Kramer, Tommy Rettig, Hans Conried, and "Dr. Seuss" himself (not his real name, of course..and, btw, he had some problems with the film but actually liked it for the most part)...and others. However, the person who co-interviewed all these folks died and, unfortunately was in possession of all the taped interviews at his house. His room mate wound up grabbing up much of this person's film material, including all the unpublished 5,000 FINGERS interview tapes, and disappeared. No one was able to track him down. And, thus....this planned, big, very detailed retrospective article came to nothing. By the time of the theft of the tapes, the principal players mentioned above had either passed on or weren't able to re-do the interviews. All that remains are great memories and some interesting behind-scenes photos. What a friggin' loss!

That is, indeed, a shame. I just rewatched the picture for the first time in probably twenty-five years, since I was a wee lad. And I found it brilliant. I would love to have heard more information on interpretation, production, and insights.

I read Hans Conried's biography and I found out some interesting tidbits contained in the film's first draft. * Mrs. Collins' cage originally was suspended above Dr.T's bed and she was to recite some rather strange dialogue in which she stated her loyalty to T. * Dr. T had a saber which he would use to cut the heads off incompetent henchmen. They would rise again as zombies. * There was going to be a grand musical finale which motivated the twins to strangle Dr.T to death.

I saw this when I was about six to eight in the 60s. Scared the heck out of me! I've been trying to Google it for years with search terms like 50s or 60s kids movie piano. That's all I could remember. Finally have closure, and I look forward to watching it anew, hopefully a bit less scared this time!

Hans Conreid is a legend!!! He's great!! He is in so many great radio shows!! Amazing character actor!! He is in all my favorite radio shows, from Life with Luigi, Life with Riley, and My Favorite Husband, I believe he has made an appearance in all of them. If you haven't heard these shows look them up because I listen to them or at least one of them every night going to bed!! Oh, he is the neighbor on My Friend Irma!!! An absolute legend!!!

I grew up with this film and always loved it, although I didn't get to see it in color because we had a B&W TV. I later had the fortune of seeing the the beautiful 35mm IB/dye-transfer Technicolor print of this at UCLA several times. The Blu-ray really does look like the IB print. There is a 3-CD set of the entire song list and score which is great. Bottom line, this movie made me who I am today, a professional musician with a warped sense of humor. :-)

There are comments ive read about this movie that are similar to mine and i don't know why this movie fascinates me so much, but i first saw it as a teenager back in the eighties when i got very sick and was drunk on NyQuil and antibiotics. I remember just staring at the tv wondering if what i was seeing was a real movie. It really fried my brain for a couple of hours.

Dr. Seuss disliked the final result and especially hated the way the script was tampered with behind his back, etc. After the experience he had with this movie, it took a lot of persuading on Chuck Jones' part to get Seuss to do the television special "How the Grinch Stole Christmas". I'm reading a Seuss biography right now.

The movie has GOOD visuals , but lousy ACTING and horrible SONGS. A woman I knew way back in the 1980s SWEARS that toy stores used to sell the HATS with the little HAND on it back when the movie came out . I've been buying , selling and collecting vintage toys since 1983 - NOT ONCE did I see the hat for sale .

But if you would put em on the market now, i'm sure you'd find plenty of buyers. As for the songs.......there are some genius songs there, the do-mi-do duds is masterful, music/ lyrics, dleivery, staging, costuming......the department story elevator.....SOO good, i wish there'd be more floors though.........The Terwilliker institute song - the Michael Kid orchestra dance number is legend.....
