I tried to imitate that head movement in sparring, but my problem is that it's the fear of getting hit. Joe Frazier had ice in his veins to do it against the top heavyweights.

julio mario orozco jervis First try fighting more like Qawi: only ducking when a punch is thrown and jabbing as your head goes down. If you can get that down, Frazier’s more proactive bobbing becomes more natural.

The problem is you can't see your opponent because you are looking at the floor.
@BurtMeister
@BurtMeister 5 лет назад
I used to have this exact problem and I noticed it pretty much every time I sparred, only usually at the beginning of sparring, especially if it had been a while between sparring sessions. However I always found that as soon as I did get hit, my instinctive sense to fire back kicked in and I no longer feared getting hit. It helps also to keep your chin down, grit your teeth, look at your opponent through your eyebrows and as your last line of defence, take any punches on the top of your head if you can't get out of the way or mop them up with your hands. There is a good chance your opponent will hurt their hands if they hit you on top of the melon and less inclined to throw as hard. Bernard Hopkins talks of this when he talked of "taking shots on top of your helmet". I think developing your counter punching skills helps with this too, as you have to flirt with the danger of getting hit, moving just enough to avoid punches and return fire using the incoming force as a part of your strategy to magnifying the power you can deliver. Counter punching in my experience is best done by offering your opponent a tempting target to draw a predictable punch/punches. Having rehearsed for this over and over in your shadow boxing to pre-program appropriate responses into your body for when you need them. Like driving a car or riding a bike, initially it takes great concentration, but with repeated practice you trust yourself more and let your autopilot take over.

Actually bob and weaving from the legs is harder. Requires more energy from the leg muscles cause your squatting down and it leaves your head still up right so you can get caught. Watch a lot of defense masters and they almost all bend from the waist. Hurts the waist a bit but is actually better defensively

This style requires a lot of energy and dedication to training to utilize and the demands of this style tends to shorten the career of fighters ending their prime years earlier than they would have with other styles but considering. Yes, he’s definitely a one handed fighter. The guy literally blocked with his face and managed to throw a hard punch right after it. When someone gets hit hard (and it HURTS them), the opponent almost never hits BACK hard.
@wes276
@wes276 5 месяцев назад
@@kcuba1228that’s false. People hit back after being hit hard all the time. Especially his opponent, Jerry Quarry, who was known for having a legendary chin. Every big punch doesn’t freeze an opponent. And as you can see; that one sent him sideways. Looks to me like he was preparing to throw that shot as he got hit and still launched it out of reflex, which happens a lot. He hit Ali with plenty big shots that Ali retaliated against, including the left hook that he was famous for.

Bit of an under rated fighter. He is always portrayed as just being tough as hell. He is rarely credited for his technical ability, defense most of all. Certainly he had all the heart in the world but he also had an amazing defense as long as he was moving forward. Wen unable to back his opponents up, like Forman, he became vulnerable. Other fighters like this are mike Tyson and Roman Gonzalez. He also was so fluid with that leaping left hook, I don’t know if any other fighter who could put that much into a punch without telegraphing it.

This head movement is about timing not speed.

For sure. Joe had constant head movement and had such irregular rhythm.

* casually throw a jab combo that ends with a hard uppercut* end of fight goodnight fellas. in case you were wondering what a Mike Tyson VS Frazier fight would look like. Just to add to that, people seem to think this is the same peekaboo bob and weave Tyson Damato style, that s wrong because frazier didnt duck to extrem sides and never changed angles of footwork, he also didnt shift his weight along with his head to a side while throwing a jab,hook or body shot like Mike did while throwing any of those. If this is a bob and weave style id call it Peekaboo v1.0, and call Tyson s style Peekaboo v5.0 perfected to the bone.

Frazier didnt throw a variety of shots either and would only come after you in a straight line, they really didny fight the same.

@@hi._.golgo137 it all comes down to Joe surviving the onslaught. If Joe dragged him into the late rounds, Mike is gonna be in trouble.

@@Ffeoli1039 I think frazier was too tough for tyson, when Tyson came against someone with a good chin he was in trouble

@@yentamoon1808 Yeah, I tend to see Joe getting on the inside easy and while Tyson was a decent inside fighter, he wouldn't be able to keep up once Joe started smokin. Tyson never really was able to clinch or tie up well, and I don't see him keeping Joe off him for too long.

The only weakness of bob and weave is if you let it become too rhythmic and predictable.

Joe Frazier was Mike Tyson before Mike Tyson was Mike Tyson.
