Joe Grey...This is a traditional Romany Gypsy camp fire dish.5 simple ingredients cooked to perfection. It has sausages, bacon, tomatoes, onions and potatoes in it, topped up with water, then 3 stock cubes crumbled in, then simmered, it couldn't be easier, Resulting in an absolutely tremendous dish, which was, quite frankly, a revelation to eat.Simple peasant food, which, when done right cant be beaten, as this dish proves, you must try it.
Many thanks.

My aunt was a cook in a floating fish camp, that housed and fed up to 20-30 fishermen. Often a storm would brew up in mid-day and the boats would come in and call it a day. Faced with a bunch of grumbly, hungry, wet men and nothing prepared, my aunt said she always used the "onion secret". Frying up a big bunch of onions in bacon fat. The men would smell that she said and settle down, not bothering her until she could prepare a meal. She said it worked every time! Cheers.

My father was a Romanian Gypsy and this reminds me of a dish he used to make. It consist of one large onion, half a head of garlic, any kind of hot peppers such as jalapeno. For the protein well it varies from what mood he was in, from pork chops cut up into bite size pieces, or polish sausage, or steak, or use any combination you prefer. My dad mostly used pork chops. Fry about 2 pounds of pork chop in some olive oil, ( season with salt, white and black pepper and a little cayenne) then when u have a nice color on them throw in the onions and peppers for a couple of minutes, then add your garlic. Then add two 16 ounce cans of crushed tomatoes, about a half of glass of wine and a can of water ( use the empty tomato can) bring to a boil then reduce to low for about an hour or so. Then he would make what he called steamed potatoes, about a table spoon of olive oil 5 large potatoes sliced about an 1/8 inch thick and brown them on one side then flip them over and lightly brown the other side, then when they have color on them take about 2 or 3 tablespoons of water and pour into the potatoes and then cover with a lid repeat this step twice. Then take a serving of potatoes and place them in a bowl and pour some of that hot stew on top and it is absolutely delicious my friend! This is also a one pot meal, well except for the potatoes of course. I hope you try this Scott it is really delicious!

Looks like southern cooking to me. I know will love that. My mom use to cook like that. If we were poor. We never knew it, lol.

+Thomas Tommy Good quality, no thrills and tummy filling food like this was always what Mum prepared for us. With 9 kids to feed and low income she was inventive and always smiled if we asked for a slice of bread to mop up the gravy. We knew we could not afford holidays or school trips but never felt poor in the way some did. I reckon your Mom and mine put a lot of love in those mealtimes and that makes them such good memories. Rob.

Yes it does make good memory's. My parents had 11 kids. I was the baby. I was a change of life baby. I have neces and nephews that are much older than me. I've watched most of my siblings and neceses and nephews pass away. I have 2 siblings left. Even lost one nephew that 7 months younger than me. Yes my mom cooked them same foods. I grew up on a mountain farm. We always had pigs. Sorry I took up so much space. Thank you for getting back to me. It means a lot to me. I enjoy your videos very much. Please keep them going. Thanks.

My grandfather was a Romany Gypsy. He saw my future grandmother being attacked by someone and saved her, they fell in love so he gave up the travelling life and settled down. I grew up eating food like this along with stuff that most people would turn their noses up at, such as hedgehogs, squirrels etc. He'd often get mushrooms and other stuff from the local woods and fields rather than buy them from a shop, can't get much fresher than picking your own.

I don't know if you pick up comments this long after the original video but if you do, thanks a bunch for this. Made it tonight and all the superlatives that you used are fully justified, it's a killer dish, easy to make, fairly cheap, delicious and, weirdly there's loads more of it than you expected. Not sure how that works but after two bowls there's still two bowls worth left for tomorrow. On a slightly different note, I have made other dishes that you've showcased and all were worked out deliciously so thanks again. More power to your elbow. PS: you're right about Colman's!
