"Kikujiro" tells the story of a young boy who, having lost his father early in life, relies on his grandmother for support. During the summer vacation, he embarks on a journey of a thousand miles with a carefree and self-proclaimed "Kikujiro," a quirky stranger. The film is filled with moments of joy, absurdity, humor, and warmth. "Lucky are those who are healed by childhood throughout their lives; unfortunate are those who spend a lifetime healing their childhood." Perhaps, this is the true theme that director Takeshi Kitano wanted to convey. The heartwarming plot, coupled with poignant music, automatically brings back memories of summer and childhood when watching the film.
Speaking of Joe Hisaishi, he is likely the starting point for many music enthusiasts born in the 80s and 90s in China. From "Spirited Away" and "Castle in the Sky" to "Kikujiro's Summer", almost every piece is well-known. As the melodies play, thoughts instantly transport back to a carefree childhood. Simple, melodious, and light-hearted, Hisaishi constructs a marvelous fairy-tale world for us with joyous tunes full of childlike charm. Many people share a profound emotional connection with his music.
