I wouldn't call it Punk... although it IS exactly what Punk was at in it's best moments... I just think this had more about it... as Alice Cooper did in the 70's
I never heard credit given to Joe Jackson for writing the song they made a sizeable ammount of money off of. I'm sure it's in the fine print on the record.
@@edwardlubin322 Joe made all the money off that song. Unlike England, performers in North America don't get a performer royalty, only the song writer gets the $$$$. Anthrax would have made their $$ of sales of the album.
@@edwardlubin322 In almost every interview I've ever heard with Anthrax when Got The Time is brought up they credit Joe Jackson and mention when they met him Joe said in his live version he always played it faster than they did.
Joe Jackson once said that he thought the Anthrax version of this song was played too slowly. He bragged that his band played it twice as fast as them. I was skeptical of this so I checked the recorded version from Look Sharp to the Anthrax version. And the Joe Jackson version was actually a few beats slower than Anthrax. But now that I see this, I understand what he was talking about--I don't know if it's twice as fast as Antrax but it's significantly faster.
I can't believe the number of people here who are comparing Joe Jackson to Anthrax. It's like comparing apples to oranges; it's the same song, but they're drastically different genres. In this case, "better" is truly subjective.
🌟🎶 In 1980 I recorded this awesome concert with my tape recorder on the radio. Later I found it on CD. One of the best live concerts in my collection.🎶🌟
Just hearred this for the first time. Was skateboarding around and it was playing outside the Irish pub. Had to STOP and appreciate the tHe greatness oi
It always amuses me when people are shocked to learn that some some they love turns out to be a cover. It wasn't some big secret when Anthrax released their version; And obviously none of these people who "love" Anthrax so much ever actually bought the album "Persistence Of Time", since the songwriting credit was clearly printed on the label and the liner notes.
I was a baby when this song was new, and I was 21 when I first heard anthrax. My thoughts were, "Wow, this is really punk," and that it wasn't like their other songs. The big shock for me was how faithful the cover was!
I remember when Anthrax's version came out and it was definitely no secret that it was a cover but I had no idea who Joe Jackson was. Now in the days of the internet, it's easy to find stuff out but back then, not so much.
I Me and some friends saw them on this tour at Manchester Apollo. Got meet them after. Thet were really nice and Joe even took time to writ e letter of encouragement to my friend regarding his band.
I consider that clip the greatest live performance of a punk rock song on film. There may have been better ones, but you had to have been there to have seen it.
And now, some 40 years later, a band of badass Indonesian women has covered it as well! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aro12Q-IWMc.html And their singer/guitarist does her own little homage at the beginning (little dance with arms outspread, like JJ's version after the guitar "solo")!
