Louis was already 32 years old in this fight and passed his prime but what a finish to the fight. No one finished a hurt fighter like Louis, with the bare exception of Tyson perhaps. Thanks for posting!
You see it over & over again in these old footages. The old fighters tended to have a certain...nobleness, about how they conducted themselves. A mutual respect for one another...with virtually all of them giving Louis the full respect he deserved. Joe however, he even stood out amongst them. What a humble & good man he was...not just an excellent boxer and hell of an American. Sure miss that in today's times of hype, bling, glitz and loud mouth braggarts.
I love this post by Thaddeus speaking to the self / other respect many boxers from previous generations displayed, " nobleness," indeed. I just finished a book on the great Jack Dempsey, and although brutal, often went to help pick up his opponent after the damage done and help him to the corner. Today, these sometimes great fighters (and they are great) do backflips, jump on the turnbuckle, beat their chests, not to mention the circus coming into the ring, all for commercial and egotistical reasons. Can you imagine these older guys having such nonsense even come into their head ? They were (not all) dignified, disciplined, down to the business at hand, and sportsmanship meant something back then. It's a reflection of the deterioration of the culture at large. I want my respect, my respect, my respect ! Then start with self respect, and you won't be demanding it so much, like these men.
@@brucekugler5164 ^^ Yup. It's the quality of the character that matters. For example: Joe Louis was handed a list of what he could/shouldn't do. Now he minded it well, but much of that was really just him being him and the influence of the legendary Jack Blackburn. Yeah...love seeing the footage of the ol' guys all palling around and laughing.
Intro to Joe shows how far we've come, and haven't come, (... " a credit to his race," ). They knocked that off in the 50's. Credit to his race ? Billy Conn one hell of a boxer, had a strategy that was working for a long 8 rounds, keep distance, circle clockwise, to keep from the left hook and hope to block the right. He learned to be more defensive and restrained after the first defeat, but in the end, he was dazed from a punch, lost focus for a second or two, long enough for a great boxer like Joe Louis to capitalize and come up with a strong upper cut, finished by the thunderous right. But Conn was a great boxer too, very coordinated boxer, up on toes, keeping distance, circling and doing what he had to do until he couldn't do any longer do what he had to do, .... Boom, boom, goodnight. Louis too strong and ring savvy.

Conn came in heavier and slower, added to Louis' great ring intelligence the outcome wasn't surprising. He was a great learner and always worked an awkward opponent out second time round. Conn, whose footwork was used in Erroll Flynn's Gentleman Jim, took the risky strategy of circling towards his left, esposing himself to Joe Louis' potent right all night.
What? Did you even watch the end? Have you any understanding of boxing? Conn was taking right hands all night. The punches that finished him came immediately after he'd been disorientated by another right.

Anyone who even gets close to beating Joe Louis the first time will get wrecked by him in the next fight Idk why maybe Joe Louis has been over exposed to gamma rays but he goes incredible hulk on ppl who beat him the first fight or even got close
I think it's as simple as this, conn had a good day, Louis had a bad day, and then vice versa. Billy didn't take all that much damage the first first fight
I cannot believe the ring announcer said Joe Louis was a "credit to the race he represents" and he didn't mention Billy Conn's race! What a slight! I guess he was originally supposed to announce Conn as "Fighting out of the blue corner, and the one sober Irishman in attendance tonight..." but they thought that could be construed as a stereotype
Yes, I noted this too in my post above. It's the same happy horse manure people still say about black folks, "and so intelligent," or other left handed compliments as if they generally aren't a credit to their race, ? or intelligent ? And people wonder why some black folks lose their patience being belittled. White people can lose their cool when hurt, with justification, but not black people.

Billy Conn, one of the best light heavyweights of all time. Great boxer, a dancer, much courage, and had an iron chin to stay in there with Louis....However, in the end, did it matter how much talent he had going against one of the greats, maybe the greatest heavyweights of all time. Conn's inflated ego and arrogance to think he could of slugged it out with Joe, caused him to get knocked out not once, but twice. He was not satisfied to win the fight by a decision, so Joe had to put him out two times. Both great fighters.....Classic fights. Thanks for the uploading of these video's.
Their first fight Louis lost too much weight plus he had been fighting every month for 7 months and didn't bring his A game. This time he came in at a more natural weight. It was no contest!
Conn looks like a YTE low budget and I mean low budget Ali always seemingly dancing on his toes, if he'd only let the hands fly a little more, there were a few times he had Joe set up to be hit but just didn't let them tools fly because joe was always plodding along.
First time id seen both these contests and after listening to Joe tell Muhammad he'd be in his bum of the month club i had to laugh big time Ali would have whupped him inside eighy prime for prime!!
You didn't see the ref count those first 3 secs...look closely and you see his first hand wave is at 4, the 2nd is at 5, etc..., as Billy had already been down for 3 secs. The ref did call him out correctly at 10...and at that time Joe was in the neutral corner. ZERO cheating...and Billy was beat up pretty good at the end there and didn't look like he could have handled anymore. Not a good idea to stand toe to toe with Joe...he had to much power and it came from either fist. Love all these old films...!
Except Max Schmelling and Rocky Marciano. I'm black too, but I'm not going to sit here and let everything be about race. Everyone can be beat by anyone regardless of skill, knockout power, athleticism, race, or national origin.
