Joe Lycett talks to MP Jess Phillips about her ability to win headlines and her passion for television programmes that represents the whole of the UK, and more.
It’s been a big year for Labour MP Jess Phillips, who won Celebrity Bake Off in March, and was all over the news in July after taking her 10-year-old son to do his homework on the front step of 10 Downing Street, to highlight the problems caused by an increasing number of schools closing early. Comedian and presenter Joe Lycett talks to his good friend Jess about her ability to win headlines and her passion for television programmes that represents the whole of the UK. She also tells him why she thinks there isn’t enough political satire on TV anymore and the big difference she thinks female political correspondents including Laura Kuenssberg are making. Described as a heroine by JK Rowling after publication of her first book ‘Everywoman’, Jess’s passion for improving the world and empowering women is infectious as is her self-depreciating wit.

Joe is better interviewer than I was expecting. You can see him leaving some gaps for her to keep speaking where other comedians might have wedged a joke in

I really enjoyed watching this. Whatever your political persuasion, Joe Lycett was the perfect interviewer. No interruption, no show boating and trying to steal the attention from the guest. Very refreshing and intelligent approach.

This is the woman whose mother was Chief Excecutive of a NHS organisation and Chair of a Mental Health Trust and daddy was a Teacher, but hey , if you want to flaunt your “working class” “ ordinary lass” credentials, you carry on

She literally states she went to grammar school and never considered herself to be working class but people assume that of her because she has a regional accent. Try actually watching in future before posting unpleasant comments because you might learn something, won't look so foolish and it's overall a much nicer way to be.

@@billyshears5569 I think she'd win. Phillips won a strongly leave seat on a pro-remain platform. Corbyn, amongst other faults was too London-centric. Phillips is liked by the media too, if you can't get the right wing British press on board, you're doomed.

@@fireanduril in all honesty I want labour to provide a credible opposition. Its dangerous when one party has a carte blanche to do whatever they want. I'd rather see a centrist opposition but then what do I know?

@@billyshears5569 I couldn't agree more. Labour lost integrity under Corbyn's leadership. They need a strong leader who can unite them and focus on a strategy tbat can earn respect through civil, rational discourse. Jess Phillips has always had an activism approach to politics from a narrow perspective which is the last thing labour needs right now to stand a chance of recovering.

I like Joe but he's obviously pro-;abour. For him to run this like a chat show host and not a comedian speaks volumrs. he should have savaged her here and the state of the labour party. but this is akin to a party political broadcast - its full of bullshit

This is a woman who looks at the mass enslavement/disposal of men in the last century, the differences in sentencing between the genders and the murder rate between the genders and comes away with the idea that men have had a free ride and the people least at risk of harm need endlessly more protection. To believe that she must be an idiot or a bigot. And you'd have to be pretty stupid to actually believe being kept out of the lifeboats at gunpoint and forced into the trenches at gunpoint is a great point in a life...

I absolutely love Jess Phillips, honest, hardworking, real, passionate, what you see is what you get. I wish we had more politicians like Jess. If only Labour had listened to her. I hope for the future Labour adopts her positive attitude.
