When George Benson basically states that Joe Pass was in a league all his own when he was interviewed by Rick Beato-that says it all. Joe Pass was a complete guitar wizard!
From where I sit it’s worth years-to-decades of solitary practice and listening to every great version of these tunes one can get their hands on to even scratch the surface of being able to play as beautifully as Joe Pass did.
This IS music for the concert hall. We are fortunate to have had him and that this performance was preserved on video. I also like that he approaches his performance as a classical musician with humility and dignity, and absolute fidelity to his musical values.
I'm glad I kept the video and managed to digitise it @JoanthanRZeko! Joe is one of the nicest and the humblest guys, and this is him at the top of his game, no frills. This lesson is fabulous, even if you don't play guitar...ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-J5wOdikpRu8.html
For all his brilliance, he was so down to earth and genuinely funny! One of highlights of my life was seeing him perform live with Ella Fitzgerald at the Stockholm Jazz and Blues Festival a month before she passed away. The two of them playing together was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.
Когда великие и такие разные Holdsworth, Hackett и Metheny называют своего любимого гитариста - Joe Pass, понимаешь, что они не оригинальничают, не капризничают и не жеманятся, а искренне говорят правду.
Well Joe hated the tone of the guitar the pickup placement sucked and you gotta remember Gibson did the same thing to Barney Kessel gave the artist a shit guitar but unlike Barney Joe followed thru on the commitment to play the guitar live when asked but we all know the guitar wasn’t even comparable to his 1963 es-175
A complete mockery of Pop music, when they say the greatest guitar players are Hendrix and Jeff Beck etc they want to listen to Joe Pass and realise they are deluded
I'm not a fan of lists or rankings...no-one is better or worse than anyone else, they all play entirely differently and it's purely a question of who you like best. However, Joe Pass is without doubt one of the most accomplished guitarists ever and a benchmark for all musicians, in particular aspiring guitarists. That's why I took the trouble to digitise this footage from a 30 year-old video and post it on my channel...around 16k people agree with you Chris!
