I was thinking about this. Shawn Ryan does interviews really well, sometimes those interviews end up being conversations. Joe Rogan has conversations and sometimes they feel like interviews. But Shawn often plants the question and steps back because he’s a humble, listening guy. Joe riffs with someone because he’s a comedian and a guy that just likes talking to/with people. I dig it both.

He has created a platform which allows them to tell their story. Often the stories they share open our eyes to the things our government doesn’t want us to hear.

It seems like Shawn had a lot of opportunity to contribute to the conversation, but his responses didn’t push the conversation forward a lot of the time. It was strange to listen to.

@@MichaelFallon-b1l I say this from a point of view of having listened to both Joe and Shawn for years; the chemistry wasn’t there and I picked up on it immediately. In some ways it felt like Joe felt threatened by Shawn because of his A lister interviews as a much smaller podcaster compared to Joe, and in other ways I think we saw Shawn remaining as real as he is on the SRS, and showcased his natural curiosity and listens to learn instead of responds. Joe and Shawn just have different styles of getting around to the same point. At the end of the day, the host should conform to the guest. I love both, and have learned so much from both, so I guess competition is a good thing to hear new perspectives.

He's 99% used to being the interviewer, not the interviewee. Couple that with a probable unconscious understanding that he's on an even bigger platform, and Joe apparently deciding to do a rail of caffeine, and this happens. The episode gets much better once Shawn starts talking more though. He needs a 2nd and 3rd appearance at least.
