I think the Somalis were also fascinated by the fact that the production hired actual American-born Somalis, so people who looked exactly like them, not just generic black Africans.
@@nanayawberko3212 r u serious? It was in a fictitious african country. However, there were several africans in the movie and the language of wakanda is a real african language.
It was a really good movie I thought. Hanks always does an amazing job portraying characters based on a real person. He’s done it like 20 times already and he always hits it out of the park.
The real captain Philips was a piece of shit and tried to sell his staff out and was forcefully taken and they make him out to be this “hero that will die for his staff” yeah right lol
I wonder if he liked Somalia before being captured. I’m a Somali and like I’ve been there it’s so amazing, especially now it’s like how it was like 10-15 years ago. Such vibe it’s crazy.
Why is it impossible to find out who is actually being interviewed. Nothing in the title, nothing in the description, nothing in the clip, nothing in the first 200 or so comments or replies.
The pirates were once fishermen, but the fish have all been taken by fishing trollers and the Somali ocean water polluted by cruise-ship sewage waste. Give them all a UBI and free health care ... and they will stop being pirates.
@@c.galindo9639 yup. Somalia has the largest coastline and the most illegal fishing and dumping by other nations. Pirating was born from small fishermen trying to protect their waters
I saw that movie. It's very loosely based in reality. I'm a big fan of Tom Hanks, but the movie was a very hollywood version of what actually happened.
His name is Michael Scott Moore, he was a journalist who traveled to Somalia on a grant from the Pulitzer Center for Crisis Reporting to research a book on piracy. He was abducted by a local gang of pirates in January 2012 and was a hostage until they released him in September 2014 for a 1.6 million dollar ransom
@@jamalperkins4514 lying about what? I keep seeing fruitcakes like you accusing him of lying but when questioned you never elaborate. Are you just bothered this dude is talking about Somalians?
I call bullshit on that story he told. The Somali's gave him a fork to eat with...they gave him a phone to watch a movie😂😂. Say what?!! That's funny shit mate
More now it was awesome! 2 squares a day of shit to eat, my own hay cot on the floor, they only rarely put a full auto AK in my face.. AND, I got to eventually watch 40-45 mins of an American movie once...
I mean the dude did say the pirates liked to spin things to make themselves look good, like when they lost the hostages and told him that they were killed. 3:14
Dana White is full of shit. The UFC has been encouraging this outrageous, thuggish behavior for years. People who talk trash and start beefs for no reason are rewarded with title fights and stardom while polite, respectful fighters are seen as boring. Dana White keeps saying, "Oh, this is the fight business, and there is nothing we can do", but a key part of martial arts used to be to always respect your opponent. I don't remember ever seeing people talking trash at Karate or Sumo competitions.
Me reading comments: "Do you ate with them? wth did I just read" .1 second later Joe: "so what was living with samali pirates like, did you ate with them?" Me: "woah"
This makes no sense if you don’t know who this guy is. It seems like he is Captain Philips and he was, unluckily, taken hostage again just after the release of the Captain Philips movie.
They have smart phones....but utensils are hard to come by.... OR MAYBE EATING WITH THIER HANDS IS A CULTURAL PRACTICE just as it is in other places like India and the Middle East.
@@Farhan917 Somali, sorry you were right in that. Still you’re just a big of an idiot like me for correcting him incorrectly «bruh» Edit: This comment was made after him calling me an idiot.
@@casualyoutubeviewer9198 You are an idiot since my comment didn't include the word pirates 🤦♂️. Somali = single individual, Somalis= multiple people so when you add the word pirates it's Somali pirates.
@@Farhan917 You are an idiot since you don't understand that I wasn't saying that you even included the word pirates in your sentence. Idiot. I said the original comment had the word "pirates" after it, meaning it isn't "Somalis pirates". You fucking corrected him incorrectly. It is also very funny how you try to correct me when I just saw your now deleted comment too, full of mistakes. Not shocking you deleted it. "How I am an idiot for correcting someone? This is why education is very important about the world you are living in" How do you even have the audacity to correct someone on their english when you literally wrote a comment like this? It's "How am I an idiot for correcting someone? This is why education about the world we are living in is important" that is the correct way of writing this sentence. So not only is your ability to understand logical things, like me referring to the original comment saying "pirates" and not you, absolutely flawed BUT you also resort to calling someone an idiot for correcting you when you were not clear enough on your corrections. You know that rhetoric is also just as important as knowing about the world we live in, maybe you should do a course on it?
My favorite part was when he went back any forth between whispering and yelling and I had to constantly change my volume to both hear him and not wake everyone around me up. Good times.
@Mahad Hassan It could well be true, the origins of knocking glasses together to say 'cheers' comes from the days when people would poison rivals, the idea was to spill some of each others drinks into each others cups to show that you're not attempting to kill each other. 🍻
As someone who's interacted closely with cultures from that part of the world, use of the community platter is their weird way of instilling camaraderie. It's also a conniving way by the food distributors, usually the head of a clan, tribe, or whatever to save on food supplies and shame anyone asking for more. They avoid using utensils because they consider those a western tool that supposedly eliminates taste from the meal and prevents digestive chemicals released by the fingers when you clump up morsels before putting them in your mouth. I've been invited multiple times to such community platters. Personally I've given in a couple times as a gesture of goodwill but the reality of a community platter stands in stark contrast to its conceptual purpose. You always have 1 guy who clumps more from the plate than you, and unless you do the same, you're left with the least amount to grab. From their perspective, the food is god's decision about the amount a person deserves to eat. Their economics, math, and code of conduct are really off. This practice can be observed through the entire region, not just Somalia. Sure nuances exist.
@@conormackey204 I actually learned it from one of Joes other guests ha ha. Pay attention to when he does the awkward hiccup thing. I'm no psychiatrist, I'm just psycho.
Michael Scott Moore is a novelist and journalist who was kidnapped by Somali pirates and spent two and half years in captivity. C'mon JRE Clips what are you doing.
I wish whoever uploads these clips would do the audience the courtesy of identifying who the guests are. I'm not American and I have no idea who Joe is talking to. The link in the description also goes to a private video so it is no help.
I woulda made friends with some the pirates... I woulda made up shlt and say us americans love the somalia pirates and we think your so cool and respect and I have posters of pirates on my wall etc etc...even tho I have never heard of them 🤣😂🤣🤣
I am sure this would have been a longer ( the original is 80 minutes) and more interesting podcast had Joe did his homework 1st. At least a synopsis of the book. He seemed like he knew the guy had been kidnapped, held and that is it.
Why are people being assholes to the guy who responded to the question? Its like a child asking their parent how to count to ten and saying "no shit dumbass" after the parent showed them.
4:07 bull shit, it is not because utensils are not that common it is because its tradition. The reason they also consume alot of spaghetti is because for a small while Italy held territory there. Furthermore , the ones from the older generation are fluent in both English, somali, Arabic and Italian ( source my parents are from somali and are fluent in these languages and so are most if there friends). Sorry to ruin the story its just factually incorrect and could be assumed to be an outright lie.
Ships : we will come to your shore and take all your resources. Somalis : well we won't allow that to happen and we will protect our shores. Media : Pirates!!! Bad guys
I am sorry on behalf of the somali people. The eating of one big plate and eating with the right hand is an Islamic way of life the somali are taught that way and even the pirates themselves if they are so bad buy again they have a bit of Islamic understanding like eating together and with the right hand. It's not an issue of utensils.
Something tells me the pirates would not like the movie Sicario 2 when he interrogates that guy. And gets information out of him by threatening his family with drones. I imagine drones are the very thing that represent western aggression in the pirates/insurgents point of view. I think I heard once that some insurgents were afraid of clear sunny skies because that's optimal drone weather.
It’s really not hard to see the west as the bad guys. While there are no “good guys” in war there is more often than not a lesser evil, and the more I learn, the harder it is for me to see the west as the lesser evil in the grand scheme of the world.
