Joe Rogan, host of the one of the world’s most popular podcasts, recently interviewed Richard Dawkins about Dawkins’ new book, “Outgrowing God: A Beginner’s Guide.” It’s a follow-up book to Dawkins’ bestselling “The God Delusion,” although this one is aimed at younger readers. The Rogan/Dawkins interview went immediately viral, drawing over a million views within 48 hours.
Today, I talk with Brandon Vogt about the first half of the interview, responding to arguments raised against God and religion. (Part 2: • Outgrowing Atheism (Pa... )
A listener asks whether Bishop Barron has considered making Word on Fire into a religious order.

Jordan TRusso it won’t happen. Joe knows he wouldn’t be able to handle bishop barron. The only way it happens is if he gets bishop barron and Dawkins on at the same time. That way he can tag team and feed off Dawkins. But he couldn’t handle bishop barron by himself.

Andrew J I’d have to disagree with you, Joe is absolutely no kind of intellectual, he admits that freely, but he has in the past brought on a number of scientists and religious people of views and beliefs much different to his own. I would not go so far as to say it is impossible. Maybe just improbable.

@@Ajas0810 Joe mostly rolls over before all of his guest so long as they don't criticize marijuana. Criticize that and his gloves come off in all cases. When Candide Owens comes on and says the same stuff without the depth of knowledge Joe finds his balls and tears the woman apart. Time at least in the form we understand it is a product and aspect of physical reality. Does this rule out a sequence or continuity beyond our experience? No, Purgatory for one must be finite so ir shares at least some basic aspects with the temporal nature of time as we know it. As for Heaven, well new souls do enter it, so some form of progression must be, but the means of that and its nature are beyond our scope of ken perhaps, certainly it is above mine. God makes all things, so the form it may take is nigh infinite in form, and who is to say it is static in its nature, this life is but a foretaste of Heaven afterall. I hope this msy help with understanding on the potential nature of time need not be limited to the form we take it by experience. Sebastian Melmoth . Taking New and Old Testaments as reference, we can speculate. But Our God Himself said ‘eye has not seen, ear has not heard, nor has it even entered into the mind of man, what God has prepared for those who love Him”. So why desire it if we don’t know what we’re getting? Because our God promises it will be good. I trust that promise because of the taste of bliss I get from prayer and the Eucharist. I’ve discovered Catholicism has depths and heights and I expect more awaits. Science demonstrates the benefits of faith in this world- if not the next. As far as what eternity is like, my speculation is based on the experience I remember of holding my newborn in the night - my whole heart and mind united to her with a profound contentment I’d never known and knew I would never tire of if it never ended, and time even seemed to be only an eternal present. Some things have to be experienced and cannot be imagined. Such is the case with heaven, according to Him.

I remember reading the apologies of St. Justin Martyr and he actually made the "one god further" argument in DEFENSE of Christianity 1800 years before Dawkins was born: “Thus we are called atheists. And we admit that in respect of such supposed gods as those (i.e. the gods of ancient Greece and Rome) we are atheists: but not in regard to the most true God, the Father of righteousness and moderation and the other virtues, the God who is without a trace of evil. Him we worship and adore, and his Son, who came from him and taught us of these things, and the host of the other good angels who attend on God and are of god-like nature, and the Spirit of prophecy. These we worship with reason and truth."

The first surviving biography of Alexander the Great was written 350 years after his death, by Plutarch, and this is considered reliable. Another example is Tiberius, the emperor reigning at the time of Jesus. The first biography considered reliable by ancient historians appears 50-60 years after his death. Atheists wrongly think that becoming Christian is comfortable. I think atheism is the most comfortable position there is: you could commit the worst crime in history and not have to atone for it when you die; all your worries, guilts, and mistakes will be annihilated with you. To be a Christian is one of the most uncomfortable beliefs to ever exist: torture, martyrdom, and slaughter (ongoing in the Middle East and Africa), not to mention the endless ridicule from modern culture. Jesus clearly said that he came to sow division, not peace.

@Julian Classic misunderstanding of what God is. If it is scientific evidence you seek, then you will never clearly find God. Science deals with probabilities, not truths (a conclusion is found to be most likely or true beyond a reasonable doubt, not absolutely true); also, science is restrained to what we can observe within the universe, it cannot say anything about something outside it. You are making a categorical error. Catholics never claim God to have a penis (at least until he became man). God is beyond male or female, but we use masculine pronouns to attempt to understand his character, since he is like a father to us: loving and wise, but also just and wrathful. I could talk more, but I doubt you are going to listen.

I remember a long time ago when I saw a two-part episode of South Park called “Go God Go”, which satirizes some of the atheist celebrities like Richard Dawkins and pretty much illustrates that atheists can be just as irrational, bigoted, and mob-driven as religious people (explanation on the plot synopsis below if you want to read it)... The basic premise involves Mrs. Garrison having to teach the theory of evolution to the boys in science class. Because Mr./Mrs. Garrison in the show is often the stand-in for any ideological fanatic, she starts out in this episode as a stereotypical fundamentalist Christian. When she cannot teach evolution, without getting the facts wrong and breaking into the stereotypical Young-Earth Creationist rants, the school ends up hiring Richard Dawkins to teach the class alongside Mrs. Garrison. After the two of them get acquainted and meet after-school, Richard Dawkins is able to convince Mrs. Garrison to become an atheist after giving just one generic argument. But then Mrs. Garrison turns into a raging anti-theist who actively bullies even the students who have a belief in God while understanding and accepting the science being taught. Soon, Richard Dawkins and Mrs. Garrison start a relationship, with the latter boasting about what a better world they could create if religion did not exist, goading Dawkins into also becoming just as extreme. Another sub-plot begins with the spoiled rotten kid, Eric Cartman, becoming impatient about the pending release of the Nintendo Wii. He desperately tries to freeze himself in the snowy mountains to make the time go faster, only to find out that he slept for too long and it is now centuries in the future. Now he wakes up in a future where Dawkins and Garrison married and started a successful movement to abolish religion. But the world is still just as violent and chaotic as before, with warring factions fighting over who is the superior group: The Unified Atheist League, the United Atheist Alliance, or the Allied Atheist Alliance (which happens to be a new race of sapient otters). So the world is no better off, and the few humans/otters that do suggest an openness to religion get stoned to death on sight, until Cartman uses a time traveling device and accidentally stops Richard Dawkins and Mrs. Garrison from marrying. Supposedly, these were Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s way of telling people that even the poat-apocalyptic future in the episodes is more believable, than the world magically becoming some kind of utopia and automatically yielding a superior civilization with religion being gone.

Start with Craig because he has the best philosophy defense and can introduce the concept of Mere Christianity, then introduce Feser to take Craig’s position further but in a more Catholic direction. Finish the effort with Bishop Barron who can jump off of the strong philosophical defenses provided by the first 2 and provide a more indepth look at Catholic theology. I disagree with John Lennox - Dawkins frequently describes a God which the majority of the faithful believe in. Shall we call them the less sophisticated christians at risk of sounding patronising? I find when you press deeper thinkers such as yourself, you come up with a vague deism that has no strong logical link to the Christian bible. I find Lennox misses the point when he rebuts Dawkins’ issue with the “who created the creator” argument. Simply defining God as something that doesn’t need a creator seems to completely miss the point in answering the question of a prime mover. Why not just assert that the universe doesn’t need a creator and skip the God step? It’s exactly the same. Or better still, be honest and admit you don’t know. I have no problem with people believing in God because that’s how they feel - I strongly disagree you can get to God honestly using logic.

Bishop Barron! Speaking on psychedelics, I’m curious to know if you’ve ever listened to Terrence McKenna describe his DMT experiences? Very interested to hear your take on that.

Saw this coming a mile away. Absolute "swing and a miss" is right with the one god further argument. Probably the least compellingly argument for atheism I've heard. When I listened to this podcast I was hoping you guys would put out a response thankyou will be nice to hear the second half.

The one god further thing isn't an argument for atheism.

(33:00) I was wondering (Id love it if you'd show me a scripture) that if god is nothing like these "characters", then why is he so heavily personified in scripture? It seems to me like though he is much more of a noble, all encompassing being and the mythological gods are very secular and physical in design. But are we not made in gods image? Why do you describe him to be the "sheer active to be itself" "God is not one being"? I'm just asking the questions that came to mind, I appreciate your thoughts. :)

Is it just me or would a podcast with Joe Rogan and Bishop Barron be fire?

Is the person he's talking about being canonized at the beginning a different person than Henri Nouwen?

Sheesh. What turned me back away from Atheism was believing that Truth exists. It's hard to explain. But that was the first step all the way as a very young man seeking fulfillment in my life.

I'm not afraid of death or my Angels. When i was at Church i see wake up one big blue Angel with a sword on his knee in front to a Priest with his head down listen at this position the explanations of the Priest not moving himself for nothing, was like He was hearing by that respect all and was it awesome. I Loved to see them.😇😇😇👼🔥☄️

Regarding the point on psychedelics (Entheogen's) - have you by chance read "The Sacred Mushroom and the Cross" by John Marco Allegro (or the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Christian Myth by him) that Rogan references? Do you know if the Catholic church actually bought it out when it was initially released? I found it interesting the "Plaincourault Fresco" in the Plaincouralt church in France showed the Amanita Muscaria as the tree of good and evil in the Garden or Eden. Is it plausible to consider use of psychedelic's to reach a higher consciousness played a part in the creation of myths and ultimately religions historically? Seems most cultures had Shaman's, Witch Doctor's, Medicine Men, etc.
