The attitude towards fanny packs is much the same as the attitude towards rollerblading, listening to Nickelback or having a foot fetish. People SAY they don't like it but they secretly do. An influential person makes a joke or jab that catches on and suddenly it's a major faux pas that makes you somehow gross or gay or weird.
For men it keeps from wearing your pockets out. Esp if you carry keys and a pocket knife. I saw an older man in grocery store once and he was carrying a pocketbook..i ragged him and told him i liked how it matched his shoes. He wasnt fazed by my comment. He said i decided you women have it all figured out carrying a purse. You can carry everything you may need in these things. Lol he was secure enough in his masculinity that he didnt care what people thought.
I feel like if you just move the fanny pack to the side it makes it look 1000% better. Either the side or behind you, but behind you is probably difficult to sit down.
I wear a men's concealed handgun crossbody bag, it's super cute & i keep my wallet inplace of gun compartment seriously. I get compliments from military people and looks from cops!

Fanny packs have been around for a long time now. I wore one in the 80's when my family went to the Jersey shore for our family vacations. I used one so I could go on all of the different rides so I didn't lose my stuff.
tht's how you use a fanny pack, no short cuts, no over the shoulders. If you are wearing a fanny pack just go all in. Any other way it just show insecurity.
