When I was a kid my dad had a friend who was a comedian who told me about Robin Williams stealing jokes and that it was a somewhat well known thing in comedy circles. He also told me he didn't believe Robin knowingly stole the jokes and that he was so scattered sometimes that he just couldn't tell the difference between jokes he had heard and jokes he had come up with.

Tbh, I believe that explanation. Nothing about the man appeared to be selfish or vindictive, he had a lot of shit going on and when you're using drugs and alcohol, it's very easy for things to get jumbled. I hope he did actually compensate other comedians. It doesn't make it all better but some gesture of good will is better than nothing.

I felt the same way, I discovered his RU-vid back in 2021 through my battle with meth addiction, he was one of my sources of comfort during my painful and uncomfortable withdrawal days or when i was feeling so low or was tweaking so much I couldn't sleep or focus on one thing, having his full hour plus long vids play in the background was a lifesaver. having watched "comics explained" some years before that, I was constantly suggested more of Comicstorian's vids and really got into it because I loved how he did full complete narrations of comics instead of just summarizing them or explaining them. I loved the way Benny approached making his vids through the voice acting, narration so I can listen while multitasking and also including scenes from the comics he was narrating so i can sit and follow along if I wanted. He also made it easier or helped made it easier getting into different franchises that have been around for decades. I haven't been watching his vids for almost a year now after having completely quit doing drugs and being sober since I associated watching his vids to the my struggle with addiction but this news makes me very sad because I never forgot about him and had always planned on revisiting to check out his manga channel since I've been getting more into that lately This news is so very sad and unexpected

I completely agree. I think people often forget, or were never taught in the first place That the prison labour system is a direct continuation of slavery. The 13th amendment was written with a workaround built in. That being the words "except as punishment for a crime"

@MrSlowestD16

Yeah, it's an odd one, b/c they do it to incentivize people. Like if you could just get sued for all your money when you release a drug that to the best of your knowledge you thought was perfect, the risk would be too high to develop drugs. But then they put this blanket immunity in place and now it's impossible for them to face consequences for bad behavior or extreme negligence.
@RiversEagle_
@RiversEagle_ 3 месяца назад
@@breania_inekora5069 Sadly, no. The 13th Ammendment specifically places a loophole of "Unless for the punishment of a crime." So what essentially happened is that slavery became more hidden. The United States government at a state and federal level began arresting people of colour en masse for minor crimes, giving them needlessly harsh prison sentences and then using them as cheap prison labour. It's gotten so bad that when there was a supreme court decision to lessen the sentences or even release non violent offenders, the attorney general of California at the time, Kamala Harris (the current Vice President) actively fought and ignored the orders because it would weaken their labour force. She nearly got the entire state held in contempt by the supreme court because she wanted to hold onto the prison labour pool.

That first story hit close to home. My wife just died on the 25th. Her heart stopped. Not a heart attack, nothing external caused it, it just stopped. She was born with a heart arrhythmia and the Doctors said even with the perfect bill of health they told her just a week prior this kind of freak accident can occur. I was right there. I did CPR and called 911 right away and it wasn't enough. Nothing short of having a defibrillator for the home would have been enough. Life can be taken away in the blink of an eye with no warning or reasoning. Sometimes you see it coming from a mile away and sometime you don't even know it's happening till it's too late. Hold those close to you and tell them how much you love them. Today could be the last chance you'll get.

Unfortunately I have a host of mental health issues that mean it's been nothing but an uphill struggle to take my health seriously, even with the T1D hanging over my head. I fear every little pain in my arms or my chest or my head. I've been seeing more and more stories about young, perfectly healthy people just keeling over from heart attacks, strokes, and aneurysms. The explanation that Williams gave is very much something that can happen, I know from experience as a musician that a similar thing happens when you listen to music then try to write your own, the little bits that your brain picks up and remembers just find their way in, and I feel that in his case, realizing that and finding a way to deal with it is a hugely important thing to prevent accidentally using something that someone else may have said at some point.

They let you know that you're getting jack squat for the work, but it's made out to be this sweet gig that isn't jail. And the thing is, it's better than staying in a 60-man room. I was there for only a few weeks, but nevertheless, I experienced one of the worst injuries ever [torn rotator cuff, no ER to help], not to mention that I was witness to the sexual assault of a fellow inmate. I still have the carbon copy of the complaint that I made (coincidentally, I was released on my own recognizance soon after). We NEED to stop putting people in jail for non-violent offenses, as well as stop putting the majority of people (who are mostly poor) in jail so they can wait and suffer just to get their day in court. Jail reform needs to happen 159 years ago. But since that's not possible, NOW is the best time.

I don't think there needs to be age limits on members on Congress. Legislating age limits on members of Congress is only treating a symptom. Part of the reason we have "too many" members that are "too old" is because there are no term limits. Term limits would purge most of the people who are "too old" on its own, as well as address a lot of the issues with having people sitting in a seat of power that is basically uncontested so long that they are trivially able to serve well past the point where they should.

As a Criminologist, one of the things I want more people to realize and understand is that slavery never ended in the United States, it just became more hidden. Prisoners are functionally slaves but get far less sympathy than the enslaved, because most people dehumanize inmates. The 13th Amendment, the one that outlaws slavery, specifically has a built in loophole. Slavery shall not exist "except as punishment for a crime." So what ended up happening is that slavery just left the plantations and cotton fields and instead became institutional. What this ended up causing what that people of colour, especially Black and Hispanic people, began getting mass incarcerated and given prison sentences for minor offences and crimes. A Black person caught with crack cocaine would be given a harsh prison sentence that if a White person was caught, the White person would have to have 10 times as much drugs in their possession to get a punishment similar to that of the Black person. Then, once placed in prison, they'd be subjected to harsh slave labour and any complaint or minor misbehaviour would be penalized with extensions on their sentences. And if they were release on parole or something, they'd be given extremely harsh and strict release conditions that would be easily broken so that they'd be rearrested and thrown back into prison. This problem is so prevalent that even the current vice president Kamala Harris, when she was the Attorney General for California, actively fought against a supreme court decision aimed to reduce prison populations in the United States so much that the state was almost found in contempt of court. She actively refused to release nonviolent and low risk prisoners because it would heavily reduce the cheap labor pool in the state. It was found that not only was she and the state not trying to reduce prisoner numbers, they were actively striving to INCREASE the number of prisoners.

@@JMittenkit I'm pretty sure the gigantic drug company that is Bayer knows their consumers are everywhere, and clearly they are intelligent enough to know advertising with non-mainstream/traditional media makes them look smol, bespoke, and more relatable. They are still a massive corporation and massive corporations are dangerous.

Phil you're killing me. The story about Ben Potter (what an incredible sounding person), broke my heart, then you remind us all that we only have one life and it could be gone any second. Then you have to bring the most beloved comedian's voice on and just make me sob. The world misses Robin Williams and Ben Potter 😭😭😭

Thanks Phil, I am so happy you covered Ben Potter, the Comicstorian. Didn't know him personally but Benny carried himself well and his enthusiasm was infectious. He allowed me to enjoy stories I probably wouldn't have. He will be missed.

I've been gutted about the sudden death of Comicstorian all week. I've watched him for years, he raised me, my brothers, and our generation on a love for comics- a dying medium. I even brought this up to a coworker who's never heard of him who pointed out how incredible the impact youtubers can have on our lives now. It used to be that news would cover when a famous actor, musician, etc passed away but now not only is mainstream news covering his tragic death, but now I learn about the cause of one of my favorite youtuber's death by my daily news youtuber. Rest in peace Benny and thank you Phil for covering this, check on your loved ones everyone ❤

When I was in prison, I worked at a meat processing plant. I had to put 90lb blocks of frozen cow parts through something called a hydroflake. Thawing had no safe guards. Also the fire department program doesn’t even help land a job as a fire department.

Regarding the tradwife topic, what she stated is awful and I hate when people intentionally offend other people. But I do respect her for not posting a fake video about being really sorry to avoid further backlash like you see everyone else do. She didn't back down, consequences be damned.

The Comicstorian is one of two reasons that I’m here today. Like on this channel, on RU-vid. I found the Comicstorian and Comicsexplained at the one of the lowest points in my life. Having something else to focus on, rediscovering my love for comics - it’s indispensable. All this to say, Benny will be missed.

I'm also a Dark Present fan who realizes that not only is the prison thing a de facto men's rights issue, but that part of the reason the sex disparity is never mentioned is because it would actually DECREASE our compassion for the situation... Even if Phil just briefly stated "with some people claiming this is a men's rights issue because more than 90% of prisoners are male...", he would end up in hot water, with a lot of people tuning out. That's the lovely dark irony of the whole thing with caring about male lives too: We don't care, and we don't care that we don't care, and we're so against caring that this comment is making me look like a schmuck or someone who "must hate women". We've set up a really unfortunate binary where you have to supposedly be "against women" in order to care about men.

@@destrygriffith3972your intelligence and compassion is wasted on Phil's audience, unfortunately. You're exactly correct in how your comment will be taken, most viewers here are brainlet tik tok-addicted children.
