livinglegendsmusic.com www.satriani.com An exclusive series of Living Legends Music interviews with Joe Satriani. Part 6 of 11. Recorded on October 31st, 2008 at the House of Blues in Lake Buena Vista, FL.
I've met him a couple of times, and he's just like this interview. Even nice guys can have off days, where they don't feel like being nice to people. I know I certainly have. Does that make them an asshole? I don't think so. People often forget that celebrities, no matter what level of fame - are human.
They don't come along very often, but Joe is a TRUE 'living legend'. Even with his status and fame he seems just like a regular down-to-earth guy. I've been listening to his music for over thirty years, and he still manages to keep coming out with music that sounds 'fresh'. It's amazing. ROCK ON, JOE!!!!!!
Most are smart enough not to go into debt. We get to hear this story because Joe got the lucky call and in the end a record company did solve all his problems. Very inspiring. /s
hate to disagree Paul, this guy was never an ordinary musician !! Of course his story by the laws of natural law plus he's natural talent for the instrument led him on the path to illumination and success, many musicians get lost in their own fears, egos and distractions. When I bought surfing with the Alien back in 95 or 96 at local store here in NY, I just couldn't believe my ears. thanks to guitar professor of mine. I knew right away this was something above the rest.
Iron Maiden were THIS close to being out of business before they got a record deal...somehow they had accumulated £50,000 of debt that they didn't have a hope in hell of paying off until EMI took them on.
As a teen, "Surfing with the Alien" was an instrumental album (cassette) that I had on "replay" in my 1979 Chrysler Cordoba's Alpine stereo with Infinity speakers for weeks on end. It gave me a new perspective on guitar and made me think my car was cool.
I got an autograph from Joe back in the early 90s when I worked for Walgreens on California and Spruce Street. I helped him find an item and then asked him for a quick autograph. He is a very kind person. By then I already owned his EP-Dreaming#11 which I bought in 1988 containing my favorite song The Crush of Love. Yes, I still have his autograph.
I love Joe been listening to him since my birth in a car 1988 BEST THING THAT MADE ME WHO I AM TODAY LOVING GUITAR AND BEING SOMEWHAT CONSISTENT BUT IM DISTRAUGHT WITH MADNESS AND I NEED HELP
I've seen Joe three times back in early90,s flying in a blue dream tour ,G_3 ,and last yr at the university of Buffalo, blew me away all three times, phenomenal guitarist and person.
my all time hero.. im a 35 yr old guitar teacher.for the past 15 years i was very much into jazz, but i can't re- discover the true joy of guitar playing sach had given me .maybe i don't have the talent,i dunno
still remember reading about him in guitar mag, and going out and getting surfing, then went right back to get not of this earth. my favorite guitar god...
I ran one of the clubs that Joe played in San Francisco, The Palms Cafe. One evening in the early summer of 1980, The Squares were booked, but I was unable to be there when the show started. Coming in late, while the band was deep into their set, I rounded the corner, heading for the door down to my office when Joe took a solo. At the first phrase, I was stopped dead in my tracks. The sound, the tone, the execution, all were sheer perfection. I've heard most of the great bands of my era, many of them in live concert, but Joe's performance that night on that song on my stage, was one of the greatest experiences I've ever had listing to live music. Hello, Joe, from across the vast expanse of space and time. All the best.
Brilliant when he talks about seeing who he can be and who he thought he was. It's great to listen to guys like Satch, or Gilmore and people like that who are very intelligent and equally articulate. What a breath of fresh air! And very inspiring....natch!
Thomas Elliott yup Randy Rhoads was ahead of his time at that time. Would have definitely been one of the greatest guitar player's today, I think he still is till this day
Wow! You are my most favorite guitar player. Thank you so much for sharing your dramatic life story leading to success. You made it! 💯🌻❤️ Congratulations!
Legend, first record i bought with only mind blowing guitar solos, big move at the time. Joe made us all Surf with the Aliens. Great to hear this story. Thank you.
have been listening to his music for ages now, I strongly feel he is quit progressive and unique in the way he keeps his music so timeless and one can play his music even today and still sound so new and fresh.
You have took this ridiculously off topic, all you have done is insult me...? like I actually don't understand why you are doing this. If your doing this just to troll me, it hasn't worked. Writing an essay insulting me is pretty hilarious and sad, it would make sense if you are actually in your teens, but if you are an adult that's even worse. Whats even worse is I'm actually 17 and still replying to you. I'm not one for insults usually, but just a fuck you is just fine, no need to get all weird. P.S If you need a friend, lemme know because I'm here for you.
:-) Silly boy, we're only having fun here. This is just a laugh, that's all. Don't take it too seriously petal. What are you boozers like, all bloated opinion, that you simply MUST share with the world, and then all popped bloon, as your ego deflates in defeat. YOU started this by telling me what to do! And now you're squealing like a stuck pig. You know your looking pretty bad here right? I'm just being kind dude. Cont. . .
Joe is still and always will be my go to road trip artist...If I tell you I'm driving from NY to Maine...Joe Satriani, The Complete Studio Recordings will be in my player.
I've met Joe a number of times, chatted awhile about whatever and he's always been friendly, cordial & accommodating with respect to advice or signing stuff. All the folks he toured with on 3G stuff were nice, but I always kept in mind they were working and travelling constantly, tough on them. But all great folks, always fun.
The man is a musical freak! I mean that with complete respect. His understanding of music theory and the application just makes my head hurt. When he explains something on a video, it's still over my head.
The coolest guy in the music business. It seems. I stood next to him for a picture and the person taking the picture cut my head out of the picture. That was such a high light in my life. A man with so much creativity. Truly amazing talent. Thanks for letting me take a picture with you Joe.
I'm small fry from Cincinnati, OH and I have great respect and admiration for Mr Joe Satriani. Just goes to show you don't need the great powers to be greatly powerful! Thanks Joe!
Oh...my....god....That man is blessed! Not only hes the best guitarist ever,he had the luck to make it with no money! And im still sitttin here in my basement, noodling my guitar....I have to make it too! Thanks Joe!
I saw Joe 2nd row in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on his last club tour. It was the most amazing display of guitar virtuosity I have ever seen in my entire life. Absolutely amazing. Sadly, I always worry about his health because he never looks like he's healthy. Is it the lack of hair or the lack of tan? God, he's a damn genius, though.
Jwestcott5000 I've been following Satch since I was about 12-13 and I'm 31 now and I have no idea what you're referring too. He's always looked and seemed very healthy at any point in time I've seen. Full of life, energy, passion and he always exudes a lot of love and happiness. I know he cut his hair so it's not like it fell out or something lol he's not pale either so idk I don't see it. I mean I know he's white too so I don't expect to see a tan either. Different perspectives I guess. However I can see aging in his eyes and skin etc. a[though he still looks good for his age but after watching some old footage right before watching this, it's really apparent that he's aged quite a bit! Can you elaborate and/or refer me to some footage, examples???
That is the common beginning to every struggling musicians out there. So stay strong, hold on tight as the journey might be a bumpy one but as long as you hold on to it, sooner or later the road will clear and you will reach your destination and achieve your goal.
im a bass player but i dabble in other stringed instruments and a huge zappa fan ... i followed the breadcrumbs to joe and went to see him a couple of times in scotland ... one time i was in row 2 or 3 and he did the usual throwing picks after numbers i caught one !!!! ... not long after my mum passed and i got myself a muscle purple one ( and a floral vai because ) my strat has the gk roland pickup on it and i use that for almost everything but the guitar on the wall next to my helix is the purple and its always plugged in i learned midnight and am working on satch boogie ( all the way to the fast bit ... wonderful ) mr satriani is one of a few inspirations in my life ... wooten , forcione and beck being in the front runners joe was the one that lit my fire
Great to see you made it with everything on the line.I took my former wife and son when he was about 5 years old ,his first rock concert at House of Blues in Orlando,Fl .This was somewhere around 2000 and you Mr.Satriani established yourself as one the greatest guitarists and musicians on this planet.I have just about every cd you have and ever time you come out with new music I can't wait to hear it!You are one of my favorite s.I believe your Italian like myself so that adds to the ❤️ Again glad you made it!You are a awesome inspiration in such a good way with us your audience.I loved you for many years and continue to love you!Keep on rock n on!!!
IM a guitarist and I saw this guy in 1986 and hated him because he was so incredibly good and the show off that I wish that I was at that time. His interview was very humble. Anybody would like this guy. Class act. THanks Joe. Loved you the second that I heard you...
As I've said before: I am greatful for every person AND FORK😅🤔🤙 and the music his parents listened to and of course his ways that made him SO SATISFYING, PLEASURABLE AND BEAUTIFULLY EXPRESSIVE. TRULY GREATFUL ME🙏 A'HO
🤘that WE DO.... a bit brief and short of intensity SO I WILL COMPENSATE WITH FREQUENCY!📈📉 Joe is another factor making it a great time to be alive. Then there's SOME THINGS make me ashamed to be a human, unlike Joe's and other greats' contribution via expression, mostly music.. little lyric/vocals. Not this- I WOULDN'T KNOW HOW TO CRANK UP THE VOLUME FOR ROCK N ROLL!
I first heard Joe Satriani on a demo disc issued with the UK 'Guitar' Magazine back around 95' , I was blown away it was great ! Surfing I think ......
