This video is an excerpt from an interview that I conducted with baritone saxophonist Joe Temperley on January 25, 2015.
In this part of the interview, I asked Joe Temperley about the differences between low Bb and Low A baritone saxophones.
This interview is part of the research that I completed on the life and career of jazz legend Joe Temperley. The project was funded by a generous Jazz Studies Grant through the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Department of Music.

I liked how he talked about bass clarinet as well.

Me too. It was a great analogy that he made.

Given that most orchestras in Broadway shows are not that huge, a conductor has the advantage of listening to every instrument playing. So, a musician like Joe Temperly could be proficient or expert in instruments like a bass clarinet or a low a baritone saxophone, as well as a low b flat baritone saxophone.
