Roger Clemens, a man in his 40's, was calling his mom and lamenting about not "fitting in" with the guys? I guess we never grow out of it. That story is a little comforting.
@@100spurs He was probably late 30's at the youngest. Unless Joe Torre managed for the Red Sox before the Yankees. Clemens didn't join them until 1999....
I worked the door at a bar in the W Hotel when Clemens walked in. He stood at the doorway and I thought he was a football player because of his build and we were used to NFL guys coming in. I was utterly shocked when I approached him and saw it was him. He looked huge not just due to his height but his size. All I kept thinking was pitchers weren't supposed to be built like that. Several years later is when it came out he was using. It was no surprise to me so I don't know how Joe could have missed it. I also remember his "rage" when he threw the bat back at Mike Piazza. The signs were there.
Clemens claimed he was just getting the bat off the field of play, and that if he was throwing at Piazza he would have hit him. To me, that is somewhat of a valid argument. Sure did look bad though. I always saw him as a baseball villain after he left the Red Sox
@@subg8858 I remember that and tbh I've never seen anyone cock back and throw a broken bat off the field like that. Maybe he wasn't intending to hit him but he sure didn't look apologetic like most people would if making a mistake that could have potentially injured someone. But I totally agree that he became somewhat of a baseball villain after the Sox and I really liked him when he was with Boston.
Clemens was all juiced up. But if he or the main stream media doesn't say so, then it's not true. Why discuss hearsay when the gospel only comes from Talking Heads on television.
The younger generations forget perhaps that the players from the Pre Steroid Era use to pitch the whole game and complete because they were the best athletes. Time will tell. History will prove who was a cheat from real. I remember Clemens in the 1980's growing up as a youngster and he was the real deal. A flamethrower and a baller. I saw this with my own two eyeballs. I wish more people would get in their car more and turn off the TV's and cell phones and just go see things with their own two eyes. We are all more connected with each other than the media wants to portray us. No wonder why they want us all to fear and be 6 feat apart. Perhaps we need the people telling us all of this wizardry that just maybe the truth in investigating proves that these people are the problem. Pyramid scheme 21st and 20th centuries are all a scam. They censor people whom tell the truth? If you do not like what people are saying then do not listen to them. Why censor them? Makes me want to listen more to what they are saying and then conclude.
I am with Joe Torre on this. There are Nolan Ryan, Clemens, and Randy Johnson as examples of power longevity. No one ever accuses Nolan Ryan or Randy Johnson of steroids. Hopefully, Verlander will also be a power longevity guy.
Nolan Ryan is accused of steroid use. In fact, his trainer he took on the moment he began aging and slowing a bit was widely known for distributing/training with steroids with others and at that moment Nolan began his second part of bettering his career rather than declining. He even mentions the man in his hall of fame speech
Go Watch Roger Clemens in his first 10 years of MLB... He was top 1 or at least top 3 pitchers of his generation. Hall of Fame these days is like voting in DeNiro or Tom Hanks in to Hollywood Red Carpets... We know too much now don't we? Roger Clemens was a Great and who cares anymore about these fake celebrity fashion shows. What Clemens did in Boston was Fire! We all saw it
Come on Joe, the main problem older players have is they can't condition with the high impact workouts of their prime. Even blood spinning era Kobe said so regarding the 2012 season. The PEDs are what let Clemens push himself to that level. Clemens looks and acts like someone on roids.
I love Joe but he’s wrong. The reason why people do steroids is so that they can recover quickly and lift more endgame or muscle without feeling tired. You work out more you gain more muscle you recover more quickly it gives you the energy to do more. Your body is not hurting as much etc
He had too or it was a federal crime. His wife was fine with it.Keep the money flowing. They had a chat about it ,she agreed of course.Wasnt under the bus .
Joe Torre is a pathetic liar. I respect and loved Nolan Ryan as much as the next guy. But, Ryan roided too. It’s not humanly possible to be throwing in the mid to upper 90’s at 43 years old. I don’t care how good a players conditioning is. Not, when you have thrown millions of pitchers at 95 plus for close to 30 years. Ryan roided too. Loved Ryan, but no doubt in my mind he roided too. Torre is simply defending Roger because over half of those Yankees during the Championship runs roided. He has to defend his guys, to justify his own team’s success. make no mistake Clemens was a juicer.
I have watched a lot of Graham’s interviews,,,I have never heard so many individuals being interviewed caught off guard… And complement the interviewer for the thorough level of investigation done prior to the interview… What A great complement to the craft of interviewing.
The craziest thing is that in 1990 I was in 4th grade and the names Roger Clemens and Mark McGwire were legendary. They were super super stars that we were in awe of. Ten years later, they were toxic
Clemens won in court by the way which exonerated him completely. Nolan Ryan pitched into his 40s and so did Colon so simply pitching into your 40s doesn’t make you a steroid user. I think Randy Johnson pitched into his 40s.
Let's not act like the great players who used or are alleged to have used steroids didn't dedicate themselves to the game. Steroids enabled them to dedicate more to the game.
I'm 41 years old and still benching over 500lbs. I train rigoursly for 1/2 hrs a day. Still compete in powerlifting meets. Don't take any PEDs. Maybe the secret is hard work and proper dieting.
Have you thrown 90 mile an hour sliders since uou were 18 too? Otherwise I don’t see the relevance. Everyone knows brute strength can be maintained past an age where a person can play pro ball
Whether Clemens did steroids or not....EVERY starter used to pitch 200 innings a season when Clemens was coming up into the bigs. It's not some superhuman feat. Pitchers threw more, and broke down less. Babying their arms doesn't help pitchers and it certainly hasn't improved the game.
True, but keep in mind pitchers didn't throw as hard on average in previous generations. Throwing harder equates to more stress on the arms. Furthermore, relief pitchers are more specialized and in general better now. More incentive to pull the starter.
@@treygray2817 .... No, they threw about as hard as today, but way more often, so they had more stress on their arms then. And relievers are more specialized only because that's how pro teams, managers use them. Nobody becomes a professional ballplayer by ''specializing'' in getting one lefty out.
@@mikefallopian3191 doubt Pitchers throw harder in general today Pitchers throw harder on average today Heck u can't even find proof that the old guys threw 100, just look at them pitch, no way in hell their getting 100mph
yeah look into what Tom House has to say about PED use on teams going back to 60s and 70s and he was Ryan's pitching coach 1989-92. Also Clemens was one of the handful of greatest pitchers of all time. Nolan Ryan pitched for 27 seasons and was only 32 games over .500. ROGER CLEMENS PLAYED 24 SEASONS HE WAS 170 GAMES OVER .500. 7 CY YOUNGS, 1 MVP, 2 DIFFERENT 20K GAMES A DECADE APART. LEGEND
@@SeamHead33 Difference in wins and losses? Ryan pitched for crap teams. The California Angels? Puhhhhlllleeeezzzzeeee. The Astros had decent teams for some of his seasons, but hardly power teams! The Mets, rookie season they won the World Series, but he was pretty much non existent on that team. The Rangers, Again hardly a decent team. He made them competitive because of his ability. Clemens? Red Sox, Stankees, Yankees, Astros? Those teams were built for winning.
@@michaelivey1087 Clemens 1580 BB. Ryan 2795 BB. Ryan is first all time in walks and he is ahead of 2nd place by over 900 walks lol. Clemens was better pitcher all around in my opinion regardless of teams they played for. If you wanna talk about teams, lets talk about the era they played too. Clemens 3.12 ERA, Ryan 3.19 ERA Clemens has better ERA and he basically had his whole career during PED era(also in AL East) when offensive numbers exploded and ERAs ballooned as well, while Ryan had benefit of pitching much in 1960s and 70s when league offensive numbers and league avg ERAs were much lower than in PED era. I'm not a sabermetrics guy but Clemens has the 12th best ERA+ 143 of all time and Ryan has the 285th best ERA+ 112 of all time. The more you look at it, by practically every measure Clemens was the better Pitcher.
It's always going to be weird with Clemens because even after they started the stringent drug testing he put up one of the best stretches of his career 2004-2006. In that same time it affected Bonds though; you could tell not being able to juice the same way from around 2004 kept him off the field and slowed him down. I mean, yeah, I totally think Clemens was juicing with Toronto and at times with the Yankees, especially when he was getting injured, but it's still hard to explain his run with the Astros when the modern testing was going on and they were catching guys all the time.
This is so stupid PEDs make it significantly easier to work out everyday. If I saw somone work out all day everyday with minimal need for recovery I would be suspicious. Espically if the dude was 40 years old or more
Oh stop! 🙄 the whole league knew what the deal was. Torre, upper management, gm's, assistant gm's, scouts, little leagues, women's softball, the NL, the AL, the minors...the Nintendo and Playstation video games knew. That was that era and everyone and anyone who could breathe and speak wanted to distance themselves from this fact . So no, no "gotcha" moment there on Joe Torre. There are literally HOF players right Now that have roided up! Right now This is more akin to TMZ than actual sports news.
I'm a Sox fan and I'm pretty sure he wasn't using then. Still was amazing, 20 Ks twice and went to a World Series( thanks Bukner for the loss, anyway...) Clemens made bad choices later on in life. To bad, he something else.
Steriods allow for quick recovery and for the athlete to workout longer and more often than they would ordinarily be able to do. Some of these guys just don't get it. Pitchers like Roger who were tailing off in their early 30's don't magically comeback. His lifetime record before he went to Toronto would not have warranted consideration for the HOF.
Nonsense....his pre 1998 numbers is probably the best 3000 innings a pitcher has ever thrown....Just those years are better than Kofax Gibson Drysdale Schilling Smoltz Mussina and countless other HOF careers....Clemens was not declining in his early 30s....Hof caliber pitchers dont lose their stuff at 30....look at Johnson and Schilling who peaked in their mid to late 30s. He had injuries in 93 and 95 ....that's the extent of his decline...he led the league in ERA in 94 and strikeouts in 96 and was second in WAR both years....so he was never declining. Not to mention he won a Cy Young and had a sub 2 ERA after he was said to stop using as well.
@@timmysullivan2515 He showed himself to be a PHONY when he wouldn't face the music in the poast game presser after ROIDGER threw the bat. I will say though, that if ROIDGER was going to say he thought it was ANYTHING OTHER than a bat, it does have a similar shape to a syringe.
Is Joe Torre serious?? Using juice (testosterone) or PED’s literally makes you want to live in the gym!!! Clemens used PED’s no two ways about it!!! It’s obvious, but even with that said he should still be in the HOF...
@@taylorgang2237 Anybody with a brain can look at the back of his baseball card & analyze how (in arguably the most hitter dominant era in MLB history) Clemens stats remained similar or improved as he moved out of his prime & into his later years age/athletic prime wise. It’s no different with Barry Bonds or anyone else who’s #’s were as good or better on the back side of their career as they were at their peak. This is something that anybody that studies baseball & statistics will tell you. Players don’t perform (consistently) at the same metric after they surpass their early 30’s age wise…🤦🏼♂️
I dont think joe understands what peds are for. They enable you to workout harder for longer, they dont just grow your muscles for you. I get his point that they were already great but they definitely wouldn’t have had the longevity without them
