In the early 1950s, I was given some old records of Venuti and Lang, and loved them. I was about 12 then, and had no idea that Lang had been dead for 20 years, having passed away during a routine tonsil operation at only 30 years old. Venuti went on performing until in his 70s, but when I hear his name I always think of it with Lang, although that was just a small part of his career.
great to know about this. knew about venuti, but not lang. i just wish venuti hadn't been suc a solo-hog. At 22:27, love that baritone sax! who was that? or maybe it was a bass sax?...so low and growly! love it! OK, you helpful people have informed me that it was, indeed, bass sax, played by Adrian Rollini. Thanks!
it's probably Adrian Rollini -- Venuti and Lang have other recordings with him -- Rollini was such an amazing musician, I love his lines on bari sax --- I think I read somewhere that he lost the ability to play bari because an illness weakened his lungs --- he later became (or already was?) a virtuoso on the vibraphone, and there's even a funny video of him playing a raucous solo on the chimes, in which their sound and sustain totally overwhelm the solo
@@jevanstastic It is Adrian Rollini playing bass sax. He was the leading exponent of this but in the 1930's he gradually abandoned it for the vibes. I hadn't heard that illness had caused him to stop playing it. There are baritone saxes on some other tracks; Jimmy Dorsey plays it on Blue Room.
You know that I live just 73 km from the place where Eddie Lang's parents were born. Every summer in the month of August a big concert is held in honor of Eddie Lang. And international artists also participate in this concert.😊👍👋👋👋
Thanks for sharing! Apart from their immeasurable artistic value, these recordings are technically among the best of their time, or perhaps any. The natural presence and clarity leave no doubt that we are hearing what the artists played. Subject only to playback speed!
