If you listen closely, it is not about looking intelligent or intelligence nor is it complex. But people nowadays have a very short attention span even when reading or listening, and it's hard to understand simple things. All he is sharing with the viewer is how he feels and this is in his own perspective as an old man of age age 70+years, and an invitation to think more about the essentials not just in photography but in your life as you progress with your age and accumulate the understanding of the world.
I think this philosophical perspective can be used as a way to look at life in general, not just the arts or photography. I could listen to Joel speak about art all day long.
what is he talking about? he might have points on what he's saying but, I think he's talking in complex ways as making it difficult to understand to make him look intellegent.
