The great Joel Selvin has just published 'Hollywood Eden: Electric Guitars, Fast Cars and the Myth of the California Paradise', a thumping account of the West Coast pop revolution between 1958-1968 beginning with the rise of Jan & Dean and ending with "the greatest record ever made", Good Vibrations. He beams in from San Francisco, a substantial cigar on the go, to talk about the shamefully uncelebrated Nancy Sinatra's pioneering records (and '57 pink Thunderbird), the Beach Boy who invented the surf market, the "poisonous" Kim Fowley, the genius of Phil Spector and Lou Adler and the rise of Sunset Strip.

Enjoying these chats with some people I'd never heard of, and I'm 64 and a "rock head", but confident in your choice of guest that it will always be interesting .. as this also proved to be.

I never considered the surfers as a parallel counter culture group to the beatniks. Fascinating stuff.

Excellent stuff, if anyone fancies hearing more of Joel there's a longer interview on the fantastic Rock's Backpages podcast from a couple of weeks ago.

Fascinating stuff. Nice to see a stogy on WIYE. Reminds me of OGWT in the '70s with pints of beer and overflowing ashtrays.

The only thing The Who did to improve Live At Leeds was retouch the backing vocals if someone sang out of tune.

36 minutes. The last one was 28. What’s going on?

Surely you're not feeling cheated when it's free?

@@Smudgie Damn right I’m feeling cheated, PP. We used to have an hour of fun and frolics. WIYA is losing its magic.

@@neilb224 I hear you Neil. I’m not going to be too hasty. I believe the chaps will come back with something special but I must admit sharing your disappointment. And, yes, we know it’s free but so are a lot of other excellent podcasts out there. The ones who start wanting Patreon contributions are no better than the ones who do it just because they enjoy it.

@@Smudgie You make a fair point, sir. Anything is better than nothing but Mark, Dave and Alex have set a very high standard over the last year or so. Just think back to Danny Baker’s and Jo Kendall’s two wonderful episodes apiece. Am I becoming spoilt? Maybe. But I’m still a Marxist at heart even though I almost spilled my bowl of cous-cous down my vest 5 minutes ago.

I have the impression that this interview and the one with Rickie Lee Jones were stipulated as ~30 minute sessions by those calling the shots. I certainly hope the upcoming WIYA with Richard Thompson will be longer. ...although, he's promoting a book too...

Ahh , I see that the bic has proved useful, well played, well played. .”Nasty “ hasn’t gone for it, but that was to be expected.
