Great review. I've recently been thinking of buying this set - especially as a lot of my collection consists of DG recordings (old and new), and as you say the direction they are taking is very interesting. Jóhann Jóhannsson has some really amazing compositions as does Max Richter and many others. I recently saw Danny's great review on this album and hearing a second opinion has confirmed this box set on my list. Thx Michael.
Well done Michael! I couldn't stretch to the boxset and bought the 3 albums separately (much nicer artwork than the box in my opinion and I've saved over £100!)
Hiya Michael, You need to check out 'Burial' from the hyperdub label and following Space is only Noise Jaars later release 'Cenizas'...both have me hooked!
Joep Beving is quite populair in the Netherlands. Great stuf, but i’m more in to Nils Frahm. Did you already reviewed some of his stuff? I’m not sure, but I think his studio is all analogue. His vinyl releases are stunning! Thanks for covering so much regular releases. I do hope so much that the quality will be better and better. At a certain point I stopped buying regular releases, because of the poor quality. The most happy I’m with those records that ‘ll cost you €30,- and have killer sound. It’s also easier to life with a crackle and pop here and there than. Thanks for your great reviews!
I have gotten really into "neo classical" pianists this year, Joep is no exception. However this boxset was a little too pricey for me, especially to have shipped to the US. Looks like a great set, though, thanks for sharing.
Can highly recommend Ólafur Arnalds if you enjoy this type of music. I think he’s pretty well known right? He has two beautiful looking box set/deluxe editions out at the moment. His techno group, Kiasmos, is pretty good too.
I actually have some concerns with Deutsche Grammophon…have a classical music album from them where they’ve written about the stellar recording of them even on their cover…and it actually sounds like crap 😂
Bikemike, I don't know who they have doing their pressings currently, but, IMO, they are not up to the task. It is a shame as the old DG pressings were marvelous.
Hallo Michael, i think Max Richter and Johann Johannsson are in a category of their own. I have tried Beving's noodling several times but i just don't get it. Maybe i've heard too much Windham Hill Records samplers in the 1980's... Still open to your suggestion as to which album i should try (again) to try to connect with his music. Thanks in advance! Keep on keeping on!
@@ivermec-tin666 Each one that Amazon Germany offers. Maybe it's just not my cup of tea. Will try the 2 you suggest (again?). Thanks for your reply. And the thumbs down are not mine. ;-) I like Michael's vids too much for that.
DG has made a real effort in new music in the last few years. I am not sure that Joep Beving is still with the label. I missed his USA west coast tour due to covid concerns, and at this rate I may never get to see him perform. He is touring in the EU this year. I did urge my brother to go to a live performance by Joep in Brooklyn a few years ago, which he did. I purchased his first two albums of this trilogy (Solipsism and Prehension), and they are stunning. I have previewed his third album (Henosis), but it just doesn't get under my skin. I prefer his solo piano work to his collaborative work. A stripped down Henosis I would be very enthusiastic about. Joep did record all of these tracks as solo works (alternates), but they have not been released as a collection on vinyl. As others have noted here, the original artwork on Joep's albums in this trilogy are astonishing. The artwork on this box set is a huge downgrade. The packaging choices are mystifying.
