I will just PRAY Joey is in heaven for the absolute divine jazz organist he was on earth. I just can't fathom his total technique, improvisational skills, dynamics in expression, changing tones, ALL just far too much to absorb !
I twice met this gracious and humble hero. His performance seems to encapsulate the peak of his incredible imagination and keyboard mastery. I cannot listen to this, or even write this comment without deep sadness and tears.
Joey takes his mentor Jimmy Smith’s brilliant transformation of a CHURCH ORGAN into the most soulful jazz instrument of the mid-20th century to the next level. Like Jimmy, he uses the Hammond’s powerful tonality to pull off legato improvised leads, something only horn players were able to do previously.
