It's kind of impossible to talk about Joey V. & Brae without also mentioning the Beastie Boys; it's clear that the two take heavy influence from them, both in production and in lyrics. The thing is the influence here is just that: influence. It's not really imitation. Joey and Brae clearly know what they want to make, and they did.
They do have a knack for funny bars, while also making sure they don't go too overboard with them. If anything about this album is for sure, it's that there is a balance. There's a balance between the flexing and the joke bars, a balance between the various styles (the boom bap vs. the drum and bass or what have you), etc. Even though the intensity mellows out a little during the middle, exchanging hard-hitting boom bap for more jazz/house-influenced beats, the energy never really goes away. As I mentioned, the lyrics are pretty fun, as are the instrumentals. Also Danny Brown has a feature. Danny Brown! I love Danny Brown.
