Greazy takes us through a recent playback rig build for composer/performer Johan Lenox. This rig includes DSP powered Auto-Tune for vocals, in ear monitoring, 12 channels of outputs from Ableton Live, and 8 DI inputs for string pickups.

nice rig! I'm guessing you are procesing on the apollo and sending directly out and not hitting the computer at all? Are you sending from Ableton to change up the retune speeds, key, etc.. for the Apollo inputs?

Exactly. Limiting the amount of processing done in ableton is the solution! Thanks for being you! Now bring back the PA12! It was a perfect size!

Do you run other vocal effects through this as well? For example could set this be set up with timed delays, reverbs, and other vocal automations throughout the set? I use so many vocal effects that I currently have a solution for live, but my current setup is kind of cumbersome with processors and MIDI switching. Would love to reduce it to a rack unit and laptop, and be able to use some plugins I’m familiar with live.

Could I run something like this if I'm using my personal laptop I use daily? I know you said you keep one laptop specifically for running live shows.

as long as your personal computer is powerful enough to run everything. Anything Apple silicon will do, for sure.It's nice to have a clean show playback computer but it's not required, just a good practice.
